MTG - Introduction to Sealed Deck Construction 101 - For Magic: The Gathering Prerelease and Launch

Even experienced Magic players sometimes don't know the basic process used when building a sealed deck. This video will guide you through that process and hopefully help you at future prerelease, launch, and other sealed events. However, there are some basic rules that are universal. The first is the BREAD method. While much more relevant in draft, the BREAD method is still very helpful in sealed to guide you in placing your cards in logical order. BREAD is an acronym that means BOMBS, REMOVAL, EVASION, ABILITIES, and DIRT. We've already mentioned that DIRT are the cards that are more or less unplayable. Hopefully you've already removed these cards from our piles. Bombs are your biggest threats. They are the cards where, if you opponent can not get rid of them fast, they will "go off" and win you the game. Removal is your way of dealing with your opponents threats. Removal can be counter spells, effects that return cards to your opponents hand or their deck, destroy or exile effects, ect. Removal removes the threat. Evasion refers to attackers who have some way of preventing or trying to prevent your opponents from blocking. This means flying creatures, creatures with intimidate, trample, abilities like that. Abilities means any remaining cards that don't win you the game, but do HELP you win the game. So any creatures, artifacts, etc. that have abilities other than mana abilities would be in this category as well. But let's boil all of this down to a simple rule: You want threats, and you want answers to your opponents threats. This is a question whose answer will vary depending on what kind of collection you have. For the purposes of this video, I'll be talking about organizing and storing larger, long-term collections. Please remember: this is meant as a guideline, and not an absolute rule. The precise nature of how you organize and store your cards will be personal to you and your needs. You need these to indicate when your creatures gain +1+1 counters, or your planeswalkers change loyalty totals, or even as creature tokens. Don’t be that player who needs to put +1/+1 counters on their creature but has no way to indicate this. #5 - Use bath beads. Bath beads are cheap, pretty, and usually available at your local 0.99 cent or equivalent store. For about $1.00 you can get all the counters you’ll ever need. Use counters or dice for upkeep effects. Let’s say I have a Thassa in play… Never attack without first saying, move to declare attackers. This makes it very clear to your opponent that this is their last chance to cast any pre-combat spells. If you move to declare attacks and they decline to cast any spells or effects, then they can’t make you go back to let them do so after they see what you are attacking with. MTG - Magic Defined - Modern: What is the Modern format in Magic: The Gathering?

03:10
Magic : Defined - Sealed Constructed: http://youtu.be/wbiJ_4rfAIo Magic : Defined - Casual Play: http://youtu.be/7ia_en5Emsc Magic : Defined - Standard Constructed: http://youtu.be/HAta2ODSULQ Magic : Defined - Commander: http://youtu.be/o2n6rIzIA6A Modern is a constructed format that allows cards from all sets from Eighth Edition and forward to be played, so long as that card is not banned. If a card was originally printed before Eighth Edition, and then later reprinted in or after Eighth Edition, then that card is legal to be played in Modern. This includes timeshifted cards that were printed during the Time Spiral block. Unlike Extended, the format that Modern replaced, cards never rotate out. This means that, unless it is later banned, cards that you can play with in Modern will always be legal, and the decks that you construct will always be Although most Modern decks have a higher initial cost than formats such as standard, the fact that they will never expire or rotate out is often cited as how the Modern format is actually much more affordable in the long term. Constructed decks must contain a minimum of sixty cards. There is no maximum deck size, so long as you are still able to shuffle your deck without assistance. A sideboard of fifteen cards or fewer can be used. With the exception of basic land cards, a player's combined deck and sideboard may not contain more than four of any individual card. Modern derives its name from the modern Card Frame, first introduced in Eighth Edition. Many people use this as a quick reference to determine if a card is Modern legal. "Is it in the modern card frame? Then it is modern legal." However, for any card reprinted in the modern card frame, it is perfectly legal to use the older card in your deck. The are many sites that can tell you precisely which cards are Modern legal and which are not, but my preferred site for this is magiccards.info. Typing in any card name will give you an accurate answer as to which formats that card is legal in. This is convenient not only for confirming whether a card is legal or not in modern, but also in determining legality for other formats as well. This video will guide you through the process and hopefully help you as you construct your commander deck. A few words before I begin: *This is meant as guidance, not absolute rules. Hopefully the video will help you through the process by showing one possible way to construct a deck, but it is just that: one possible way of many. *The deck I am about to construct is one I am building just for this video. I didn't already have it built, and I didn't just download another person's deck list. The final product is not being offered as the end all, be all, win fast and hard secret tech. Do you want to build your own deck instead of picking one of the pre-constructed decks offered by wizards of the coast? In that case, you'll need to choose your commander from a list of over 500 candidates, a list that grows larger with every new set. What do you look for in a potential commander, especially if you're a player new to the format? The most important rule to the Commander format is simple: Pick a commander that interests you, play your favorite cards, have fun. If there's a commander out there that excites you, that interests you, that feels perfect for you due to flavor or power or flavorful power, be they one two or even five colors, then don't hesitate to pick them as your commander and build a deck. Beyond that, there's three factors you may also want to consider when making your selection: Color, Casting Cost, Function. Playing and drafting a cube is no different than a normal draft, except that instead of opening 3 packs of Magic cards, players pull 3 packs worth of Magic cards from the cube. Think of it this way: You get to design your own set of Magic: The Gathering, exclusively for the purposes of being drafted. You cannot create any new cards for this set, but rather, you have access to every card ever made. Your goal is to create the most optimal drafting experience ever. Which cards do you select to build your set...to build...your cube? Many Magic: The Gathering players often think a cube is simply a collection of the best cards in Magic from which to draft from. While this definition is correct in a sense, it is also very limited (no pun intended), and does not fully encapsulate what cube is. A cube cannot just be a box of the very best cards ever. There must be draft synergies and strategies between those cards. They must be selected with the utmost thought and care towards interactions and playability. Yes, a cube ideally strives to offer the best drafting experience possible, but it is a work of great engineering and calculation. When you make a cube you are making your own Magic: The Gathering set out of cards that you own from which to draft from. As such cube is not just a box of the best cards in Magic, but rather an intricately planned and engineered set. A Cube is something that you constantly work on over time. New sets come out and cards must be considered. The idea behind cube started as a budget to drafting. Instead of needing to purchase packs, for example 24 packs for 8 drafters, a player could use cards they already owned to create their own packs of Magic the Gathering from which to draft. As cube was born, players built cubes with the idea of an amazing draft environment in mind. No jank, no duds, only the best, most powerful cards from throughout Magic’s history from which to choose. New players of the format often find themselves shocked that their 13th pick was still relevant to the deck they were drafting. However, as cube established itself and matured, cube builders began applying constraints to their cubes as a means of developing and diversifying the format. A typical constraint might be a “Power-less” cube, in other words a cube made up of the best cards in Magic except for the Power 9. Today, this diversity of constraints has led to everything from what is known as a Pauper Cube - a cube that tries to create the optimal draft environment using only common cards, to a Set or Block cube, a cube that tries to create the optimal draft environment from a particular set, such as an Innistrad Cube. Building a cube is a great way to get some extra play value out of your favorite cards, or even out of cards that haven't found a home in your Constructed decks. The best aspect of it is how personalized it is. Every cube is different, and you can build the pool of cards you'll draft with however you choose. Some players even create intricate lists of the most powerful Magic cards ever created and try to include each one in their cube.

In commander more so than any other format, the personal touch and customization is half the fun. From deep within the cavernous belly of Rath, to the bloodied laboratory of the Riptide Project, spreading even so far as the distant Eastern Shores on the rogue plane of Shandalar...there's one commander that is feared by all others, at that is the commander of the Slivers. Although there are several Legendary Slivers, Sliver Overlord is the clear choice for Commander. 5 mana for a 7/7 is nothing compared to his ability to tutor for slivers. The ability to grab the specific sliver you need for the specific situation that you are in, and continue doing so, even multiple times per turn, is the ultimate in toolkit decks. You can support The Professor just by checking out their store through this link: http://www.cardkingdom.com/TCC Draft is quite possibly the most popular way to play Magic the Gathering. If you want to go down to your local store and play Friday Night Magic, it is highly likely that the format will be draft. In Draft, players draft cards and build a deck from those cards, that is, you pick one card from a booster pack and then pass the rest of the pack to your neighbor. Your other neighbor does the same, passing you the rest of their pack. Ultimately, you and a your group of 8 players open and draft from 3 booster packs each, the end goal being the construction a 40 card deck. Since draft is so extremely popular, and also very lucrative, the current process of designing Magic The Gathering sets tends to create cards with draft as the priority of form and function. So what is draft and how does it work? If you are drafting at Friday Night Magic at your local game store, then you are very likely drafting from the most recent set. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the cards. Yes, there are a lot of them, and no, I am not suggesting that you memorize them, but it is a good idea to take a moment to at least read over the set list. MTG - How To Keep Your Foil Cards From Curling / Bending / Warping - Magic: The Gathering

06:33
Many Magic: The Gathering players ask the question: How can I keep my foil cards from curling? There are several preventative measures that can indeed be taken, but before we can talk about how you can keep your foils from curling, you have to understand WHY foils bend. What Is Cube: https://youtu.be/rNDBTRG6keM Building Your First Cube: https://youtu.be/xoL9dKWcwG8 Intermediate Cube Construction: https://youtu.be/zc0I6wG6O1c Advanced Cube Construction: https://youtu.be/dVmpBnw-imY Adam Stborski's Pauper Cube: http://www.cubetutor.com/cubeblog/5961 To make this around $100.00, try and find alternatives to the following cards: --Chain Lightning --Strip Mine --Maze of Ith --Fire Ambush Ben's Cube: http://www.cubetutor.com/viewcube/1 Ixoran's Pauper cube is by far the most drafted, so check it out here: http://www.cubetutor.com/viewcube/359 Music Courtesy Of: "Vintage Education" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ "Gonna Start v2" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ "Airport Longue" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ "The Machine Thinks" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Once your know what you want to build, and have a framework, start building! Look for cards that are a good value. Commons that come back (with flashback or undying) can be great, and cards that do more than one thing can help you get what you need when you need it. Cube is the apotheosis of Magic: The Gathering. It is an experience anyone can sit down to enjoy, and it creates for those players the most equal playing field in Magic. You and I sitting down to draft from a properly designed cube means that the size of my bank account, the rotation and or meta, and even the role of luck where it comes to crappy cards and jank need not apply. It is the most ultimate form of my skill versus yours. Building a cube to provide this experience is Magic at an even greater level. An active cuber is always scouring new sets for cards that might allow them to take out old cards and replace them with new cards. But instead of needing a playset of all the chase rares and mythics, you might find yourself only needing or wanting 2-3 cards from a new set, if that. In this sense, a cube is never finished. It allows you to stay forever a part of the Magic the gathering community.

Like its counterparts in other formats, Modern RDW is fast, using an obscene amount of direct damage and fast aggro to overwhelm your opponents before their decks even have a chance to get started. Building a Modern Red Deck Wins is also a great way to start out in the format. It's a deck that is easy to pilot, but still fast and effective. It's also fairly afoordable, and offers a lot of options and variety in terms of card selection. MTG - Love control? Bring yourself online in Modern, with MONO Blue Urza TRON - Magic: The Gathering

MONO BLUE TRON template deck list: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/01-09-14-mono-blue-tron/ MONO WHITE: http://youtu.be/JPGK0knztD0 MONO GREEN: http://youtu.be/IeylGFogduI MODERN MERFOLK: http://youtu.be/BSJGWT4spx8 Music Courtesy Of: "Vintage Education" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ "Lightless Dawn" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Mono blue Tron is surprisingly cheap for such a competitive deck. While still not quite tier 1, it is still extremely powerful, and it can also serve as a great intro point into the format for those that love to play control. In fact, for the fanatic blue player, this deck offer precise, almost clockwork control. It can also serve as way to start building towards the more powerful, but much, much more expensive Red Green Tron. Running at about $150, many of these components can be had on the cheap, and a few of the more costlier pieces might already be in your binder. The heart of this deck are the Urza lands, bring one of each into play and you have 7 colorless mana from three lands. With mana money like that, you can buy your way to victory. The win conditions of this deck have a beautiful toolkit like nature. Unlike its bigger brother, Red Green Tron, Mono blue keeps several win conditions handy for different situations. Treasure Mages select the tool you need to win the game you are playing, and Academy Ruins will bring them back as much as you need them. This is not a deck for those who don't love playing control. Emphasis on the word love. You need to be a control fanatic to appreciate and enjoy the precise construction of this deck. As such, this deck is not for everyone. Even with its relatively low cost, I always recommend players interested in tron proxy a deck first, and practice a lot to see how they like it. Depending on your play style, you'll find it to be either a thing of clockwork beauty, or, or a rusty machine whose gears keep grinding.

Best of all, the game is a social experience for kids and adults alike, where players use math and strategy all the while stimulating their imagination and creativity. This video will teach someone who has never played the game before how to play in less than 15 minutes. Luckily, the game is very straightforward. Using a 60 card deck, draw 7 cards, choose an active Pokemon, use energy cards to power up and enable various attacks on that Pokemon, all the while placing and evolving additional Pokemon on your bench and using trainer cards for support effects. Pokemon was created by Wizards of the Coast, the same company behind Magic: The Gathering. I feel the two games are very closely related, and would describe the Pokemon TCG as “MTG-Lite.” Imagine Magic The Gathering without instant, and without a second main phase, and this is very much what Pokemon TCG is like. But unlike a game such as Magic The Gathering, learning Pokemon is easy to do, and the rules can pretty much entirely be covered in fifteen minutes.

Relatable MTG Player Gets Schooled! Magic: The Gathering Prank gone EDUCATIONAL!

03:42
Hi! I'm Kid Young and I don't think we should have banned and restricted cards! Why can't I just play whatever I want?? Responsible adults are always telling me we need to have different legalities and banned cards for a better play experience, but what do they know? Most of those players are over 30!! I just want to play casual Magic with whatever cards I feel like! I don't think anyone will teach me a lesson, especially not with a PRANK that somehow goes educational! Not likely! He's not the strongest, but he's definitely the cheekiest: leading a deck that generates combos on the fly and requires complex but fun board states to actually win. If you manage a win with Kraj you've definitely earned it, which makes him more palatable in playgroups that don't go for degenerate combos. It's also a very tunable deck that can go wild with ramp and +1/+1 counters if the infinite combo plan doesn't work out. This deck can be built on a budget; it uses a lot of bulk cards with no other home, and very few of the cards I'll be mentioning cost more than a dollar. So what does Kraj actually do? For 2 of anything, 2 green, and 2 blue you get a 4/6 Ooze Mutant with two abilities. Kraj has all activated abilities of each other creature with a +1/+1 counter on it. An activated ability, as opposed to other sorts of abilities, is anything you pay a cost to activate at a time of your choosing. Activated abilities always have a colon in them separating the cost from the effect, and they never start with "Whenever" or "On your upkeep". Kraj's second ability is an example, you can tap him to put a +1/+1 counter on target creature. Note that Kraj's abilities work on all creatures on the battlefield, not just yours. This means that your arsenal changes from game to game, and recognizing opportunities as they crop up is key. MTG - Magic Defined - Sealed: What is the sealed deck format in Magic: The Gathering

01:41
Advice For Returning Players: http://youtu.be/aq8fy8cbSGE Limited Edition Force of Will Print Unboxing: http://youtu.be/PLVNDkKah9g Is It Worth It To Buy Intro Packs: http://youtu.be/r-BPsAgqFtw Alliances vs. Onslaught: http://youtu.be/RYgUuFQSZDI What is sealed? Sealed is the limited format primarily played at prerelease and launch events. All players are given 6 booster packs to construct a 40 card deck from. Players are allowed to add however many basic lands they wish, but besides that, they must build their deck using only cards from the 6 boosters they opened, otherwise known as their pool. Deck may be no fewer than 40 cards, however, they can be larger than 40 cards. The remaining cards that were not used in the deck are all considered to be the sideboard. A player may use as many copies of a card as she or he has within their pool, which means that a player can theoretically use more than four of a single card. The basic ratio for a sealed deck is 22-23 spells and 17-18 land. Building a deck in excess of 40 cards is generally advised against, as is building a second deck from your sideboard cards and switching decks during the second or third game of a match. Sealed tends to have a reputation as being highly dependent on luck. While this is true, and certainly no amount of skill can change the cards you are randomly given in a sealed event, there is a still an intensive amount of skill used in determining which cards should go in your deck. MTG - How To Build a 5 Color EDH / Commander Mana Base for Magic: The Gathering

12:38
What is EDH / Commander: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2n6rIzIA6A How To Build Your First Commander Deck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbphr57jysI How To Choose Your Commander: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbSYOznJygQ Building a Commander deck is a complex construction. Perhaps most difficult of all is the proper proportions of your Commander deck’s mana base. Knowing the ratio of lands to spells is often not enough. Within your deck’s lands, how many should be fetchlands, how many should be filter lands, shock lands, basic lands? This video will guide you through the process of building a five color Commander manabase, with emphasis on land ratios for each land types. It will offer both a budget and optimal build for your deck. If you have not already seen my videos explaining what the commander format is, how to construct your first commander deck, or how to choose your commander, you may do so here, here, and here. Please Note: This video is meant both as a guide for players who do not know where to begin building their mana base, or for players having difficulty with their mana base. It is not meant as the final and only word on the subject, quite the opposite! Commander is a format with a multitude of options. This video is simply meant to help those who need it, not to dictate hard or absolute rules. The Basics Building a five color commander mana base requires you to understand the average CMC, or converted mana cost of your deck. On average, does your deck have spells with a high CMC, or a low CMC? This will affect many important factors. If you deck has mostly spells that require a high converted mana cost, such as a 5 color control deck, you should focus on 3 primary colors and consider the remaining 2 “splash” colors. The best way to proceed for such a deck would in fact be to begin with our guide for a tri-color deck, but to add 1 basic land outside those 3 colors that can be fetched, as well as to include the five color lands we will discuss later in this video. If your deck has a low to medium average converted mana cost, then this guide is for you. Especially for decks such as Slivers which has a multitude of low cmc creatures, or Scion where getting the general out fast and reliably is the primary goal, your manabase must be built to achieve five color access quickly! But how? Generally speaking, non pun intended, the ratio of lands to spells is 38+ Lands, 8+ Accelerants, for a total average of 46 mana sources. As always, your deck, and its unique mana curve will affect this formula. You very easily could need to run 40 lands instead of 38 in a five color commander deck, and if you find even the slightest trouble playing your five color mana base, the first fix I would recommend trying is increasing to 40 lands. But this video will work within the template of 38 lands, and 8 accelerants, and you the playing and commander constructor will need to test and adjust if necessary. So of those 38 lands, in a five color commander deck, what does the ratio look like?
