I'm going to teach you how to be a better singer and performer Hey, guys, I'm going to give you an exercise right now to master your breath in just ten minutes a day. Singing really has so much to do with the power of the breath. It's about controlling the breath. It's not about pushing the air out; it's about letting the air ring inside the mouth, and inside the resonating cavities. So getting control of the breath makes a huge difference. How you're going to do that, I'm going to teach you this breathing exercise, and you can do it in the morning for five minutes, and in the evening for five minutes before you go to bed. So this exercise has to do with slowing the breath down in order to get control of it. I want you to sit in a comfortable chair. You can also lie down and do this exercise. If you're lying down, put your knees up and your feet flat on the floor. If you are sitting, just sit comfortably, put one hand on your belly and you can also put one hand on your ribcage. I'm going to have you blow the air out, and then you are going to inhale for ten counts. You're going to inhale slowly like this: One-two-three-four-five-six-seven-eight-nine-ten. And as you do that, if you notice, the middle of my body.my stomach and my ribcage are slowly expanding, slowly expanding. So you don't want to fill too quickly. You want to slowly expand like you're blowing up a balloon inside your body. And then you're going to exhale with a hiss Ssssss -- for 15 counts. So your goal is to be able to do do ten of these back-to-back comfortably. And when you can do that, you're on your way to mastering your breath. So let's give it a try. So, hand on your ribcage, hand on your belly; you can be sitting or lying on the floor, blowing the air out gently. Inhaling slowly: one-two-three-four-five-six-seven-eight-nine-ten, and exhaling: Ssssssssssssssss six-seven-eight-nine-ten. Keep going 11-12-13-14-15 and relax. Okay, let's try that again, and what I want you to do this time, is when you wrap that breath around and you come to that next inhale, I don't want you to gasp the air in. Because some of you will really feel like you're out of breath at 15 counts, but the goal of this exercise is to smooth it all out. So if you are pushing that air out too quickly on that exhale, you're going to feel like you want to gasp the air in, but that's not how to work the exercise. How to work the exercise is to actually don't push out so much air. Be comfortably exhaled so that you can inhale more easily. So when you come around to that inhale, I want you to take that inhale in very slow. That's how you start to control the breath. So the way to do this exercise is to do it ten repetitions in a row. And I recommend doing it in the morning, when you first wake up. It energizes your body and gets you kind of focused. And at the same time, your are mastering your breath and controlling your breath. And I also recommend it at the end of the day, before you go to bed, a nice way to drift off to sleep.

I'm going to be talking to you about ballet. The five basic positions of ballet are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. So first position is when your toes are apart and your heels are squeezed directly together. A lot of people try to turn out the toes too much, and this creates stress in the knees, so follow your natural turnout line, and stand fully supported, very tall, making sure you're not rolling onto the inside of your foot, or rolling to the outside. Make sure that your feet and your weight are directly over and centered onto your toes. And then your arms are going to be like a round beach ball, and you should have your arms directly in front of your belly button not too high and not too low so directly in front of your belly button, your chest is open and your shoulders are down and you are engaging your back, and you stand in first position. Second position, your arms and legs are out to the side, and you actually want to gauge the length of your second position by putting one toe next to your heel, then opening it up, and then extending it a little further. you shouldn't have too wide a second position, or too narrow, because you wont be fully supported when you're moving around in that position. Second position arms are rounded and slightly forward, you dont want to throw your arms too far back, so keep them nice, round, and forward, and that's second position. Third position is used on a very basic level. It is when you are practicing to get to fifth position. You want to put your heel in the centre of your foot, and stand with both feet firmly on the ground, feet turned out. Your arms are going to come one high above your head and one directly to the side. Make sure that both arms are rounded and that your chest is lifted and your neck is long. Fourth position, your leg comes out, and your heel is going to try to become in front of that toe, and your arm is going to be coming in front of your belly button. We want to make sure that your fourth position is not too wide, just like second position, and not too narrow. You want to have a pretty narrow fourth position, which will help you when you do turns in the centre. Fifth position, both arms are up very high, and your chest is open, shoulders down, and your feet and heels are going to be connected. You don't want to try to squeeze your turnout and make both feet and heels connected fully, you want to follow the natural line of your turnout, and make sure that when you pliet, your knees are going directly over your toes. So standing in fifth position, your arms are going to go all the way up, like this, and thats high fifth, and then low fifth, your arms are down here.

Okay, so I'm going to give you a tip or two about how to correct nasality in the voice. We've all heard those singers who have that nasal sound. There are singers that are known for that: Edith Piaf, from way back in the day, very famous French singer. There are singers that have more nasal voices. Some people want to correct this and some people don't. In my training I always correct it because I'm not a big fan of honky sounds, but here's a couple ways you can do that. First is to understand that if you're nasal, you usually have a very tight nasal passage and you're squeezing the muscles behind the nose. I'll get into that more in just a second, but it's a breath imbalance and it's a high tongue. So the tongue in back is high on a nasal voice which then compromises the overtones and the sound passage of the mouth which creates a more nasal sound. There's less space, so it's tighter and smaller and constricted. So a couple of things you want to do for that is to really study breathing. Most people that are nasal are holding their breath so I'm just going to imitate that sound for a minute. And so if you're nasal, you're not using the breath. You really want to train your breath and get better control of your breath. The other thing I just mentioned was having a high tongue. So having a high tongue means that when you're singing the back of the tongue is going high. So this is a harder thing to control, but the first thing I have people do is I have them hold their jaw down, tip of the tongue touching the lower lip, and then I want you to say, 'gah.' So you're going to say, 'gah.' 'Gah.' And notice how on the G the back of the tongue goes really high and on the Ah it drops. Now on those of you who have more nasal voices, the Ah won't drop very much; it will stay in that high position and you know you have a high tongue, because on the Ah vowel, the tongue is the furthest down of any vowel in the vowel spectrum. So that's a first starter, is to hold the jaw down, keep the tip of the tongue touching the lower lip, and say, 'gah.' 'Gah.' And to see if you can get the back of the tongue to go down. And then you try it with your singing voice, 'gah.' 'Gah.' And just keep practicing that, keep practicing that tongue dropping. You can also do it without vocalizing; you can just do it with your breath; that's another way. Same position, take a breath in. Do you see the back of the tongue going down as you take that breath in? And you can add a bit of a yawn to help that tongue drop, but I call it that soft pallet flex and a tongue drop, because when the tongue drops band the pallet lifts and that creates that openness in the back of the mouth that ultimately you will prevent nasality when you have that. In general, instead of singing Ah, for nasal voices, instead of singing Ah, sing Uh. So every time you sing like, 'Ahh ahh,' make it more, 'Uh' instead of 'Ah.' 'Ah, uh.' So it's an Ah with an Uh, and that will help you contract nasality. The good news is that nasality is total fixable, so if you practice your breath and practice those exercises that I just showed you, you're going to see a significant improvement.

So we’re going to start with our feet underneath the hipbones. Knees are soft just a little bit. Remember to always tuck the lower abs in. Always tuck the tailbone under. You don’t want to have a full curvature in the lower back. That’s not really good or safe. So you want to make sure you have (?) below the belly button. So I’m going to take a step with the right foot and shuffle the left foot next to it. Take a step and shuffle, step, and shuffle. With a hip lift, we’re going to push our weight out to the side. Lift the hip up and drop it down. So these are circles lifting up and over, in, up, over and in. Now with the opposite hip pushes with the same footwork, but the accent is sharp. So we’re going to straight up and up, and up. So let’s alternate the two. So we’re going to start with a circle first. Up and over and up. Up and over and up. Let’s try the other side. Up and over, up. Up and over, up. Outside hands. So we’re going to extend the arms in the direction of where we’re going. Switch. Let’s try that with music. Double time.

So I want to teach you today a little bit about how to avoid strain. It's probably the number one reason why most singers come to me to train their voices. Is they're having problems with singing on stage and straining, or just in general having problems with their voice straining, feeling like it's stuck in their throat. The thing about singing without strain is the first thing to understand is that the vocal muscles should have very little pressure on them. The pressure on the voice should be really taken in the muscles in the pectorals and in the rib cage and to have a nice free back of the neck. Most signers tend when they strain they tend to jut their chins forward and AHHHH, AHHHH. What you want to do is the opposite AAAH AAAH so you want to tip your chin down slightly, chest lifts at the same time and bring the sound back and around. You actually want to have the sound go this way. So the first thing that you want to do is not sing with the throat so much, imagine the sound resonating up in the mouth, point your chin slightly down, chest slightly up, feel a lot of space in the back of your head, like the sound is coming in through the mouth and out the top of the head, and don't sing with so much pressure, keep it light. AAAH, AAH A AHH A AAA. Try that, keep your chin pointed down, chest up. AAH A AHH A AAAA. Some people just feel a lot of pressure here at the vocal muscles. Sometimes that can be from physical things like if you have a lot a lot of tension in the back of the neck that tends to squeeze those muscles back there and there are nerve endings in the back of the neck that actually have to do with the laryngeal muscles. So some of it can be physical and the best thing to do in that regard is to go get a massage, see an acupuncturist, you know get this part of your body healthy. I mean, singing in general has a lot to do with physical health. The healthier your body is the healthier your voice is.

So today were going to be teaching you Tutting are you ready? I am let's go. Finger tutting basics. Finger tutting is basically a small miniature version of tutting. It's basically tutting with the fingers. That's why they call it finger tutting, dude. Make it nice. Make it neat. Make it fun. Make it enjoyable for yourself. So, being able to have just simple line just like I spoke about in tutting. Bring your hands together, sliding, making sure your lines look really nice and neat. So, what's cool about it you can do pretty much anything you want with it because you have 10 fingers. Imagine how many different touch you can do with that with 10 fingers. So, we've got 2 routines for you all. What I like to do I like to have little baby L's. I bring the L together. I make a box like a square. You see my square. Great, because I see it too. I draw it in I bring it up and then I bring it down. Now, you have another box. Then I'll stack this. Stack it really slow. 1, 2, 3, and 4. Just like that. Now, he's going to pass it along to me. From here what we're doing is your going to open up your hands just like this. Make sure you keep your thumbs connected. Step 1. So, from here 1. Now, you're going to bring it over and in front of this hand. 2. 2. Now, bring it down, 3 and you're going to bring this hand over, 4. Let me show you that again. 5, 6, 7, 8. 1, 2, 3, 4. Now, you're going to break that thumb connection that we have. You're going to bring it down, 5. Open it up. Make that rectangle, 6. And right here's going to be a little tricky. You're going to close all of your fingers except for your thumb and your pinky. Just like this. And make that connection, 8. Okay. 2 baby boxes just for you. So, here we go. 1 and 2 and 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 boom.

I've worked with Donald Fagen from Steely Dan, Courtney Love from Hole. I've worked with the band Journey. I'm gonna teach you how to be a better singer and performer. So, I'm gonna teach you an exercise for how to sing with your diaphragm. Now, I can't go into all the details here, and it's a bit more complicated than I'm gonna show you. But for a quick peek into how to use the diaphragm, and what the diaphragm is, this is gonna help you understand the subject. So, the diaphragm is a muscle that's inside the rib cage, okay? So, here's one side of your rib; if I had another hand it would be over here, right? The diaphragm is inside that rib cage. The diaphragm doesn't have any nerve endings, so we can't feel it. So, it causes a lot of confusion for singers, or wanna be singers, when we start talking about singing with the diaphragm, because it's not a muscle we can feel. But, we can control its movement by the surrounding muscles. So, when the ribs open, the diaphragm has room to go down. When the ribs are too tight and locked, so it has a lot to do with your breathing, of course; when the ribs are too tight and locked, that diaphragm isn't gonna go down. So, of course, breathing and learning how to open up the middle of the body, not breathe up into the chest, but breathe down into this area, right here. And it really is 360 degrees around the body that you want to move, when you breathe. This is how you start to control that diaphragm movement, and get it to move down. Now, when the diaphragm moves down, it pulls air into the lungs. That's why so many people, when they take a deep breath, they do this, and they breathe into the upper chest. Singers have to keep the chest lifted, elevated slightly, more than normal and then reach down below the chest, for the breath. And this is how we get that diaphragm movement going, like so. So, for those of you that are very tight in this area, particularly dancers have a hard time with this, because they're always tucking their stomach, or for those of you that have very tight abdomens or work your abdomens out a lot, this is going to be a little bit tougher for you. So, with this hand that's being place on your upper stomach, I want you to apply more pressure in the areas that don't move. If your ribcage doesn't move or your upper stomach doesn't move or your back muscles where my thumb is wrapping around to, if any of those areas feel tighter than normal, apply more pressure. So, if your stomach feels tighter, apply more pressure as you breathe. So, I just want you to keep that chest elevated, hand here on the upper stomach with your fingers pointing in, hand on the ribcage; exhale your air, but don't drop the chest. So, you don't want to go like that, right? Chest stays up. Try that again. Take a breath in, blow your air out, keep the chest elevated. This is the first step to using the diaphragm correctly. The second step is trying to open down here. So, breath down into your abdomen, and your ribs, and your back; all the way around into your back. Blow the air out, chest stays up; it doesn't drop. And then take a breath in, reach down into your abdomen, ribs, and back. Imagine that diaphragm going all the way down, blowing the air out, keeping the chest elevated. You're on your way to breathing into your diaphragm.

I'm going to teach you how to be a better singer and performer So I'm going to show you how to belt without ruining your voice. The first thing to understand is that it doesn't require a lot of force to belt. So when we think of belting, we think of a lot of impact and a lot of force. Unfortunately that causes problems here. So with a singer you want to get a deeper breath because breath is what fuels the voice. So number one, breath. Number two, don't hit the sound so hard. Number three, keep the mouth more open. So these are three things you can do right away to start belting without straining the vocal instrument. You also want to practice vocal exercises so your voice gets stronger. Your voice gets stronger as you sing and as you practice. Vocal exercises are really a focused way that you can make changes in the physical voice and get stronger because ultimately the stronger your voice the more you can belt with ease. If I sing the word stay, I'm going to sing - STAY [sing]. OK. Now when I sang that I didn't go - STAY [sing]. I didn't like try to use a lot of physical muscle force. I actually used more of the breath and I thought about creating space inside my mouth. STAY [sing]. I'm thinking of the sound up here. So that's were you want to put the sound is really important because if you start singing from the throat muscles you can hurt yourself. So I really want you to imagine that . . . and I use this C shape a lot when I'm training singers. It helps to show what happens inside the mouth. So we really want this opening here. We want the tongue to drop and palate to lift and have all this space for the sound to circulate in. STAY [sing]. Instead of - STAY [sing]. Instead of using these throat muscles. So that's like the number one way to learn how to belt without straining your voice - is to create more space inside the mouth. Don't use as much impact on these muscles and get a deeper breath to support the sound.

I'm going to teach you how to be a better singer and performer So I'm going to teach you a few tips about how to sing better high notes. a couple of things right off the bat. One is high notes are not higher, they are actually faster speed. So that's something just to digest and to start to understand because we tend to reach up to hit high notes and the voice functions more like an elevator. As the elevator raises there is a very heavy weight pulling it down. As an elevator comes down that elevator is lifting. So the voice is very much like that pulley system. So as i sing higher [sings]. I want to think of as I sing higher actually reaching down so that I create a little bit of that weighted feeling, you could think of it as compression. And we want to create a little bit more compression and it also goes with the diaphragm movement which needs to be moving down [sing] as we sing higher. So that's you know an intellectual process, a visual process and an experiential process as you start to use that with your voice. What most people do again is that then go up as they go higher and they reach down as they go lower. You want to learn to sing like you speak which basically keeps everything more level. So for instance when you're speaking and you speak with a higher voice and you speak with a lower voice. You don't reach up for that higher voice and down for that lower voice. You keep everything the same but the muscles behind are making are making all of those adjustments. It's very similar with singing. So those two things, one was as an elevator as it raises there is a very heavy weight pulling it down so as you go higher you need a little compression and as you go lower you want to lift up so that you don't want to press down on the voice that you want to lift up. And then you want to sing like you speak. Singing like you speak makes it easier so that you're not adding that extra pressure for high notes and you're not falling on the low notes. So these are a couple of tips for how to sing better high notes.

I'm going to teach you how to be a better singer and performer I'm going to give you an exercise and a lesson for singing with good pitch. Those of you who watch American Idol, the word "pitch" has become a household word. We all know what that means when a singer is singing slightly off-pitch. Pitch is something that even good singers work hard to have. You can have a really good musical ear and have a good musical voice, and still go slightly off-pitch. You can have a voice that goes off-pitch just from not being a singer and not using the voice much. The more you sing, the better your center of pitch gets. You want to think of pitch like a circle with a bullseye right in the center. Different singers actually sing and professional singers who have good pitch all have a slightly different center of pitch. So there are some singers that sing slightly sharp, and some singers that sing slightly flat, but not enough to go outside of that circle. So it sounds like its really good pitch, but if you put them together singing in unison, you would even hear that. Now for your, starting to get a better sense of pitch, I want you start thinking of your notes as circles. You want to aim for the bullseye. The best way to do this and do it well is to record yourself and listen back. The first thing in determining whether you are singing on pitch is understanding whether you are singing sharp, on the sharp side, or the flat side of the note. I like to take it to the max first. Let's sing at the center of pitch and then go outside of the pitch, so that you can hear that difference. So, we're going to go sharp first. I'm going to sing ah (sings ah while varying pitch). Doesn't sound so good. But that is important to determine that that is a sharp note. Now here's a flat note. Here's the center. (sings ah) Sounds flat, okay? So you can't have good pitch until your ear hears the center of pitch and whether you are singing sharp or singing flat. That's the first thing. And I recommend going to the piano, playing a note, and trying to hit the pitch. And then go slightly sharp, and then come back to the center, and then go slightly flat. Kind of like tuning a guitar string, how we would bring it in to the pitch. The next thing with pitch is using the piano or using an instrument as a guide, which is really helpful. And the third thing is to sing a cappella a lot. But here's the thing with that, if you're going to sing A cappella, I'd like you to find what key the song is in and use an iPhone app or something, a piano app, to actually hit the note first for you, so that you are in the right key, if you are going to sing A cappella. And that's a trick for singing a cappella songs in general. If you are going to go for an audition, you want to make sure that you don't come in on the wrong note or in the wrong key, and then all of a sudden you are singing way higher than you need to. You want to be in the right key. Okay, back to pitch. We're going to sing center of pitch. What a lot of you are going to do, you're going to slide into that note. You're going to ah-uh-ah (sings at varying pitch). What I want you to imagine is, you're going to aim right for the center of the bullseye. (Sings ah). And you want to imagine coming to it from above. Why is because the actually soft palette, which is inside the mouth, needs to lift for you to be able to hit center of pitch. That gets a little bit technical, but you can start taking lessons with a vocal coach to experience that more, because it's really exciting when you start to make those changes and be more accurate with your pitch. So we're just going to do a little scale, singing on ahh. (Sings five notes and then plays the five notes on the piano.) And now, pretty good so far, now we're going to go to a five-note scale. The challenge here is in the major scale. There is a whole note, whole note, half note, whole note series. The relationship between all those notes is not exactly the same, which is where most people tend to go off-pitch. And this is a little bit more advanced but I wanted to give it to you because I think it would be interesting for you to learn. Which, you see the box right there with my fingers, and we stack this on top. And stack, and stack. After that, I slide up, down, up, and bring my hands together. So, in a rhythm or routine, what I'm gonna do is, if I wanna bring my hands together, like, boom, and I show you the movements. And I bring my hands up, and I go into this movement, I lock it down, kinda like transformer. Shoulders, there you go, you're transforming. Bring it up, stack that, stack that, boom boom ba. Make it clean, make it nice. Use all 10 fingers and make it happen.

I'm going to teach you how to be a better singer and performer So, I'm going to give you a tip or two for how to expand your vocal range. Vocal range is basically expanded and increased by vocalizing more, by studying, by training, but the principal behind is that there is an overtone series in the voice and when the voice is aligned physically more correctly, because singing is a very physical event, it's a coordination of air and muscle, and you must master the breath and you must master your alignment. I always talk a lot about alignment, your chest has to be up, your chin has to be down, your head has to be back. If you are jutting forward when you are singing, you're going to be singing from these muscles and you really need to, in order to get that column of air and that flow of breath, your chin needs to be down and your head needs to be back. So alignment is a very important part of this. So the vocal range gets expanded when the overtone series starts to ring. So if I sing and I sing without an open mouth and a position that is going to compromise the sound of my voice, it's going to sound slightly flat. So if I sing ahh (vocalizing a note, showing how sound changes when her mouth is open and opened wider and then closed). So those, you just heard a little bit of what overtones are. Overtones is when the voice is more open and aligned correctly, you're going to get the voice to ring and therefore more overtones are going to ring. And that's what creates power in the voice and tone in the voice but it also creates range. So, like my voice teacher when I was training, when I was a student, use to tell me is that the overtones in the middle of the voice are what create the higher notes and the lower notes. So a lot of people mistakenly just go to the high notes to try and increase range or go to the low notes to try and push that lower register. That initially works and that's good, you need to sing and you need to use your voice but ultimately what expands your range is getting really good tone in the middle of your voice, in the meatier part of your voice and that's also where some of the weaker points are. So you have to really work on managing that break area, going from chest to head for girls or going from chest voice to falsetto for guys. That is a big part of expanding the range, is fixing that break area. A lot of times we talk about that like singing underneath the door, that you want to slip your voice underneath the door because you need compression. Anytime you're going higher or anytime you're going through that passage in the voice. So, what a lot of people will do as they're going higher and I'm talking about the break area because this is a part of range, so what a lot of people will do, ahh (vocalizing from low to high pitch) and they get really breathy on the top because they have no compression and what we want to do is ahh (vocalizing from low to high pitch and low again, showing compression in the diaphragm not in the chest) so we can go flawlessly through those register shifts and that's a big part of controlling the range.

Remember to, again, tuck under, don't release the lower back. Taking little steps to the right, together; other way. So combining these with hip drop and kick. We tend to use it with people that have a lot of strain or stress in their voice because it's a lighter mechanism. But it's an easy quick way to warm up and here's a little insider tip, if you're at a club and you forgot to warm up the best thing to do is to hum along with the music that's playing and that is a great way to actually warm up your voice. But here's a quick little humming warm-up that I use in my studio. So we sing [hums]. And I'm kind of adding a little [hums] to it. There's a little "h" there, so there's a little breath release. [hums a scale] Nice and light [hums] Keep it light [hums]. So that's a great little exercise to warm up quickly. And you can do it without a piano if you learn that little scale, just learn it A capella, you can do it any time, anywhere.

I'm going to teach you how to be a better singer and performer So you always want to complete your warm-up with an arpeggio. An arpeggio is a one, three, five, eight of the chord. Why is that important? Because it covers some range. And we want to finish the vocal warm-up with range. So that you can expand your range a little bit. So we're going to sing on some different vowels. We're going to start with ah. So we're going to sing ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah. And notice how my voice, how my jaw is down? There is more of an oval or egg-shaped position of the mouth. This is really important. If you have trouble doing that, you might want to put two fingers at your chin and kind of gently pull your jaw down. You can also use your hand and hold your jaw down. That's a little more of an advanced technique. But just propping your jaw with two fingers is a great way to start that. Most people don't have much length in their jaw when they start singing. So, it's something you have to work on. OK? So we're gonna sing ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah. Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah. Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah. Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah. Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah. We're gonna move to E now. E, E, E, E, E, E, E. E, E, E, E, E, E, E. E, E, E, E, E, E, E. Arpeggios are a really important way to again, expand the range and complete your warm-up. I just did the ascending scale. You can also come back down. And that's an exercise that you should learn how to sing a capella and memorize. Once you get that memorized inside your ear and inside your voice, you'll have much more flexibility, and your range will expand.

I'm going to teach you how to be a better singer and performer So I'm going to tell you a few tips for how to create your signature sound and how to find your niche as a singer. For those of you watching American Idol, it's become very clear when a singer is on their path to finding their niche and whether their singing the right genre, whether they've chosen the right songs for them or not, and this is crucial in the music world. There's a lot of great voices out there, there's a lot of talented people, but the people who tend to pop through are those that have found their niche, how they sound good singing. So I'm going to just a few tips for that today. First thing is you want to choose the right material for you and that starts with lyrical content. You should be singing stuff that you believe in, that is akin to you, that is natural to you. So you want to choose lyrics that mean something to you, you don't want to be singing about stuff that doesn't mean anything to you. You also want to find the right genre, and this takes some experimenting. So one of the things I do with my students when they come to me is we go through a bunch of different genres of material, and we record them and listen back and see what they sound best singing. Sometimes a singer might like a style; it might not be what's exactly perfect for them and they might not have tried other styles. Generally it's kind of a hybrid of what the singer likes and maybe a direction they might need to be pushed in a little bit to experiment. You want to find songs that the melody feels easy for you, feels good for you. Songs, different melodies are very different. Everybody focuses on keys, on how important keys are, and yes they are, they're super important, but it's not just the key that is right, it's the actual way that the melody moves, and that has to do with some deeper stuff, like some singers like to hold notes for a longer time, some singers like to move more quickly and riff. All of this depends on how that melody moves in that song, whether it's right for you. So use your own judgment as you're singing something. You want to sing it at least 50 times. I know that sounds like a lot, but it's the truth. You want to sing it for about 50 times to get it in your muscle memory first before you make that determination. Other ways I work with people in finding their niche is in song writing, is in helping them right songs that come from their own lives, the themes from their lives. And this is one of the things I'm very passionate about. I love working with artists in this capacity. We do a lot of co-writing, and helping them pull out the themes from their life and actually create their branding right there in their song writing. This is something that we do a lot today. So for those of you that want to be artists out there in the world and you're not yet writing, absolutely start writing. Co-writing is the best way. So these are some tips on finding your signature sound and finding your niche.

So, now we're going to make the double crochet stitch. It's the third tallest stitch that exists in crochet. The first step is skipping a certain number of chains when we're working out very first row of double crochet. This is a very tall stitch so we're skipping over three chains. So one where the yarn is coming out, two, the next V, and three, the next V below that second one. So three chains from the hook and I'm going in my fourth chain from the hook. First I need to do a yarn over, again that's yarn from the back to the front, over the top of the crochet hook and now I'm inserting into that fourth chain from the hook. When I'm in that chain I'm yarning over again and bringing that yarn through the chain onto my hook. So here I have three loops on the hook, I'm going to split these three loops up into two groups. The first group is yarn over and pull through the first two. So at this point you should still have two loops left on the hook and that's my second group of loops, so I'm going to yarn over and pull through the last group. Next double crochet, remember to yarn over first, go in the next chain, yarn over, bring the yarn through the chain onto my hook. I've three loops on the hook; I'm going to yarn over and pull through my first group of two loops. You should still have two loops at this point. Now, I'm yarning over again and pulling through the last two. And that's the double crochet and you're going to work that across all the remaining chains for your first row, worked into the chain, and make sure to check out the turning video to see what happens next.

So what we're going to be talking about here is a delayed settling of our hips in transfer of weight. So what we're going to do is start with our left foot free, as we do in our Cha-Cha and we're going to step from our standing leg, changing our weight in to our left foot and continuing to settle our hip slowly, from foot to foot. Stepping and settling and one and settle, two and settle in place. Now let's count that with our Cha-Cha timing. So we're going to start again with our left leg free on count one, two, three, four and one, two, three, four and one. Alright now let's take a look at that again from the reverse angle. Really being able to see how we're using our back muscles nice and strong, driving our weight in to the floor as we go where the hip meets the ribs and one settle, two settle, one two three four and one. Stepping on that bent knee, two, three, delaying the settling of the hips, four and one, two, three using those back muscles again just like working those lats at the gym guys, four and one, two, three, four and one, two, three, four and one. And just to talk a little bit more in depth about that settling action, it's actually a lateral action settling from side to side, foot to foot using again that standing leg just to push and drive our weight to the freer leg. Christina: And one more thing to add, just for both ladies and gentlemen. You want to be careful. A lot of times when you see people dance the Cha-Cha, you notice their hips. So you'll try to replicate that and the first thing you'll do is you'll just kind of throw your hips to the side, like that. That's not good, because it doesn't look that good but also, when you do that, it kind of breaks your posture here. It just looks, yes you see hips but it doesn't look correct because it's not done correctly. So, the more that you practice these exercises, with really, going in to the ground and using your hips and not rising up and not breaking at the sides, you'll be able to get that hip action that you want in the correct way and it will look great.

A pique turn is a travelling turning step in which your foot is in a forte usually with your toe behind the knee and your arms for pique turns starts from here and they are gonna open up second position in closed back in first position it's important that you don't close your arms too soon or you keep the arms in 2nd position for too long it's also important that you feel them directly in front of your belly button instead of arc to one side or the other and thinking about that bottom line again coming straight up and down when you are doing the pique turns, so just demonstrating the arms first coz they are actually one of the most important things as well spotting in pique turns so starting with your arms very rounded and strong when you get the corner you are gonna make sure that your arms are in a second position not too far behind you wanna make sure they are nice and forward and then when you start to come towards back your arms should be together at this point and then if you are going to continue on you wanna open up the second arm to continue the pique turns so you are gonna go open up to second close to first and then open up again. Making sure that you are spotting the entire time in one corner of the room .so when you are doing a pique turn sequence down in a diagonal you wanna make sure that you are stepping every time you are going to the next pique turn, stepping in front of yourself so if I was to do a pique turn directly in front of me ,I wanna make sure that I am stepping forward and coming up to forte instead of trying to come to the side you wanna make sure that your foot is always pointed in front and you are thinking about your body coming directly to that line. so I am gonna now demonstrate a sequence of pique turns in a diagonal.

I'm going to be talking to you about ballet. Stretching in ballet is an important part to warming up, and also to increase your flexibility. You want to trigger parts of your body that you're going to be using in class. So, starting off with your hamstrings, you can flex your feet and make sure that your heels are off the ground, and you're going to grab onto your heels, and you're going to just bend all the way down, and hang there. And you're going to feel a nice pull in the back of your legs, and you wanna stay in every stretch that you do for about thirty seconds. If you stay any shorter than that, your muscles aren't able to relax, and they won't fully stretch. You also should be warming up your hips, and this can be done by gently pressing on either side. And you can change the position of your legs from being far away, to having your toes very closely depending on what you need for your hips. And so you can do a flat back, which is just your body bending over slightly, or you can round your back completely. You should also think about opening up your hips a little further by doing a straddle. And make sure that you're not rolling over onto your knee when you're doing this. Make sure that your feet are pointed and your legs are out to the side. And you can slowly just go all the way forward, or stretch to the side, whatever you feel that you need. Another good idea, to stretch the outside of your legs, is to do this stretch, where you can hold onto your knee, and you can turn your body to the side, and that's a great stretch to do. In addition, a lot of dancers have a lot of tension in their IT band, so a good way to stretch that is to bring your foot up, and you want to slightly sickle your foot. And if you sit up nice and tall, and if you just rotate your body a little bit, you will feel a very painful pull in that muscle, but it is definitely okay and it should be worked on a regular basis. It's important that you don't overstretch. If you overstretch you could pull or tear some muscles, which would be very, very dangerous.

It's easy to master with these step-by-step instructions. Aloha, my name is Jarret Delos Santos and I was born and raised in a little town called Hana on the east side of Maui. Playing the ukulele and teaching the ukulele gives me a chance to perpetuate our culture. So today, we're going to be talking about the ukulele. Okay, we're going to be learning how to play the vamp or also in Hawaiian known as the kaholo. And the kaholo is played just before a song and if you watch hula, you'll see them both kind of sway to the left and to the right and you hear three notes being played. This is what is called the vamp or the kaholo. And in a C, when you're playing in a chord of C, it starts of with a D7 with two notes, a G7 with two strums, and then your C. It's 1, 2, 3, 4. And when played together it'll sound like 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4. [Plays count] 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4. The kaholo is also used in between verses to tie two verses together. It is also used in ukulele music when you play to have everybody start off so everybody is in sync. It is a great way to make sure that everybody's together when you start the music.

I'm going to be talking to you about ballet. A pirouette in Ballet is a turn that is very commonly found on the basic to intermediate level. The amount of turns depends on the skill of the dancer. So you can start off by just doing a passe in Releve to doing a half turn, to doing a full turn, to doing two, three, four. And for male dancers they can do up to ten pirouettes at a time. So it is important to think about the alignment and the position of your fourth position, which most pirouette's start in. So if you stand in fourth position, again your fourth position shouldn't be too wide, it should be pretty small and your weight should be evenly between both legs. Your arms are going to open up, one arm is to the side one arm is in front. You are going to start in a plie position. When you plie you are going to open up both arms, that is going to be the start of your plie and the start of your pirouette. You are going to open up your arms then bring them together and your foot is going to come passe. So again you are going to plie, open up your arm and everything is going to zip up into passe. And that is the very basic level. And you turn it when you become more advanced. I am now going to demonstrate how to do a pirouette turn, I am going to do a single turn and then I am going to do a double turn.Now I am going to demonstrate a double pirouette.

So first, starting with just the shoulders, keeping the hands very still, try not to push the arms away as you're working through the shoulder. Lifting it forward, up, back, and down, forward, back, up, and down, and connecting those ducts to create a smooth circle. And when we're working with both shoulders we'll alternate which one is moving first. So the right shoulder will move forward and then the left. Next is a chest circle. You want to remember to keep your lower abs engaged and keep the tailbone down so try not to arch your back as you're moving your upper body. And the circle will come forward, right, forward, left. And then we're going to do a chest lift and a drop. And remember that action is initiated from the upper back to lift, and the upper abs that squeeze to let the chest drop. So now let's combine them into a series. So right shoulder rolls, left, chest circle from right, to left, a lift, and a drop. One, two, three, four, and then the lift and the drop. Let's try that with music.

I'm going to teach you how to be a better singer and performer I'm going to give you some tips for how to keep your voice healthy. The health of the body has a lot to do with the health of the voice. You can't mistreat your body. You need to drink a lot of water; you need to eat healthy. You need to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables that have a lot of vitality in them and have a lot of moisture in them. Singers need a lot of moisture. So number one is to drink eight to ten glasses of water a day. And this is non-negotiable. Water is non-negotiable for a singer, unless you want a really raspy voice. Raspy voices sometimes sound cool, but they have a lot of vocal problems associated with them. So it's not recommended. Drinking eight to ten glasses of water a day; eating really healthy; eating lots of fruits and vegetables -- a lot of that vitality, you want. I do a lot of juicing, particularly when I sing a lot. And that juicing, all that extra nutrition, brings so much vitality. Singers need a lot of vitality and they need a lot of breath. Juicing helps to oxygenate the blood. So, we need a lot of oxygen in the blood as well. You want to sleep. You want to sleep at least seven to nine hours. Some people are lighter sleepers than others, so I don't like to say you have to have nine or ten hours, but sleep makes a huge difference in the voice, as much as water does. Those are the two things that are non-negotiable. I know a lot of people when they are on tour have an issue with that is staying up late and that kind of thing. You have to learn to turn your mind off, maybe practice meditation or breathing exercises right before you go to bed. You can also use chamomile tea or Sleepy-time tea to help you drift off to sleep. I sometimes put lavender oil on my pillow because lavender is very relaxing and it helps you shut off the brain. I also use passion flower, which is an herb that allows you to turn the brain off and relax the nervous system, but it doesn't sedate you at all. So we use that a lot with touring artists. particularly because they are very pumped after their shows. It's like, okay, let's party! It's time to have some fun! And they end up staying too late and then they have to get up early for a radio show. Just remember that the instrument of the voice lives inside the body, so the health of the body has a lot to do with the health of the voice. Treat your body well. If you're going to go out to a party and have some alcohol or whatever, which is not so great for singing but you want to have a little bit of some fun – and you want to eat pizza and cheese or things that we don't recommend so much for singing, just remember you have about three days to recover from that, for the vocal muscles to recover, the vocal instrument to recover. Think of it as a three-day rule. If you're going to go have some fun, make sure there's three days between that fun and your singing.

In assemble you are going to brush one foot out to the side and you are going to assemble in the air both legs together and land with them in a fifth position together at the floor at the same time. So you are going to take off with one foot, bending your standing leg in a plie and you are going to assemble demonstrating it on the ground you are going assemble in a fifth position in the air or your feet glued together and then land in fifth position. You want to make sure when you are brushing your foot off to the side you want to make sure it's not going behind you or in front of you. This is very important because you want to make sure your hips are facing directly in front of you and so they stay that way depending on what angle you are going to be facing. So I am going to demonstrate this. We're going to plie, up and land in fifth position. On the other side your going to brush, with your foot pointed, plie, and stretch. You want to make sure you've pointing both legs and that both legs are meeting at the same time and landing at the same time.

Hi, guys. This is Christina from Dance Times Square in New York City. Right now, I'm going to talk a little bit about ladies' arm-styling. Ladies, if you want to get up and you can kind of practice along with me. We're going to stand. Make sure you have your good dance posture, so you're very tall, very upright. Your spine is aligned, shoulders back. Now we're going to take our right arm, and I want you to just take your elbow out, and then bring it down. So leading with the elbow out from the core of the body, out and down. We'll try that with the left side. Out and down. Out and down. Now let's take that to a full extension of the arm, beginning with the elbow and extending out, and then bringing back in with the hand and the elbow, so again, out and in. Other side, out and in. So always leading with the elbow, but keeping the shoulders down, so you don't want to get the shoulder involved. You want to keep it low from the elbow, keeping the shoulder down and back down. That's just kind of an exercise to get you moving and keeping everything from the elbows out from the core. You want to keep your shoulders down and back. Another move that we can talk about ladies' arm styling is the crossover break. As a lady when we are going side, together, side, you have some options with this arm. You can bring it up or you could bring it parallel with your shoulder. You could bring it to your hip. You could put it around your head. Anything that kind of brings your arms close to your body, around your head and down. You can kind of skim down past your waist, down to your hips. Any movement that kind of makes you feel feminine, as long as it's coming from the core, that's a great option for you to do in any of your cha-cha moves.

So you're gonna go like that, then you're gonna put your toes like that, alright? So your toes are gonna hit the floor, bam. Once your legs go up, you wanna put your toes like that, alright? And then once your toes land, you go on to your knees, to your hips, stomach, then chest, alright? And your hands are out like this, like you're falling. Remember, you wanna exaggerate, so you wanna go ahhh, alright? Once you get onto your arms you push off and you do the whole thing again, alright? So, just like a worm, it's gonna look like this. Kay? That's the first move, alright? Let's do it all together, I'm gonna do it a couple of times. Here. Alright? Saw how when I got to my hands, I pushed off with my hands, that's a push up, I push my feet down, again. Alright? That's how I start again. Pretty funny, huh? Haha. Here, down alright. I'm going to be talking to you about ballet. Chaines Turns are turns that are done on a diagonal usually that are very very fast turns. And your arms can be in a basic first position and I'm going to demonstrate your Chaines Turns with your feet together in first position. So you wanna make sure that your spotting the corner or the area that your going to be finishing and also you're going to think about your arms being fully engaged and wide. You want to make sure that your arms don't sink in as well as your chest because then you'll spin in all sorts of directions. It's also important that you try to think about going towards that direction just as we talked about in pique turns. You want to make sure that you're always stepping ahead, not of to the side because where ever you're stepping is where you're going to be going. So I'm going to demonstrate on a very basic level just the action of Chaines Turns with your arms in this position. This position just helps you become very lifted and supported in your back which is crucial to doing Chaines Turns very fast. And I'm also going to show it just by flipping front to back front to back. Practicing Chaines Turns on a basic front to back movement is good at creating speed and also helping with the fluidity of the movement. So demonstrating the very simple version, your going to point your toe out to the side and you're going to come up to a very shallow first position. From this position spotting the corner you're going to flip. Making sure your heals are turned out, and flip. And flip. And flip. And it's very good even if you are a professional to practice that every once in a while. It's good because it engages your back as I said earlier. And it's a very simple version but it's very effective. I'm now going to demonstrate the actual Chaines Turn with more speed. And if you get dizzy when you're turning in Pique Turns or Chaines Turns it's always good afterward to stop and look at something stationary. I always look at my hands. And you stop and just freeze at them and then you will instantly not be dizzy. It's always good to keep your spot which is very important in doing any turn.

We're going to start with the snake arms first, with one hand at a time, and two. Remember to move one joint at a time, within the shoulder, the elbow, wrist, and releasing through the hands. One and two. To walk with this move, we need to coordinate same arm, same foot. So as the right hand lifts, we're going to point the right foot forward, push our weight on it, and switch. Next, our piston hips. So it's a downward accent. You want to make sure that you're lifting the hip up so you have somewhere to go, and you switch your weight. And since you're lifting your foot completely, it's very easy to travel with this step coming forward or back. So for this combination, we're going to travel forward with the snake arms and back with the piston hips, taking two steps forward and four steps back and piston. Right, left, right, left. Let's try that with music.

And remember to keep your belly engaged and your knees are staying nice and soft and your hips are not moving so when you're moving the chest, you're frozen from the waist down. So here are slides. And we can try to add them to the shoulder shimmy. Pushing to the right and pushing to the left. And right and left. Now after this are lifts. So let's turn a little bit sideways and you're going to squeeze between the shoulder blades to lift the rib cage up and release it down. And up, and down. And after this you can try to combine all those different dimensions into a circle, so lift and down, here's a circle, let's try to layer a shimmy on top of it. Let's try that with music. Let's go in the opposite direction.

So Im gonna teach you a little bit about using microphones. We're gonna talk about performance microphone- like the microphone I'm using today. This is a line 6 microphone, this is actually a microphone used by American Idol currently. And it is a digital wireless which means it doesn't operate on a bandwidth and it is a sensational mic, it's one of my favorites. Most singers a re a little bit afraid of the microphone in the beginning so they tend to pull back too much, and notice what happens when I do that, it gets thinner and it doesn't have much of a presence. So in the beginning of using a mic, I always teach singers to eat the microphone, almost have their lips on the microphone as I do now, or close by. When you're singing louder, you can pull away a little bit, but don't pull away so far, because then it starts sounding thin. Thats more prevalent on a recording microphone than on a performance microphone. So, eating the microphone, not being afraid of it. And the best way to get good at that is to get a microphone, have a microphone and a stand at home. Use a microphone regularly to sing. If you don't want to bother your neighbors, you can plug that, get an interface and plug that into your computer and wear headphones, and get used to singing on the microphone. A couple of things about it. One, the sweet spot. A couple of things about it. There's a sweet spot in the center of that microphone that's very important. If you're singing like this, you're not gonna get that sweet spot. You need to be in the center of it. But the best way to learn is to get comfortable on it so to use it all the time. Also microphone placement is important. If you're gonna use the piano, you're gonna want that microphone, like when you sit at the piano position your microphone, notice I have it at an angle like this so I can look down at my hands and also at you. Because if you go to the piano and you get it all positioned and everything and then you look down and you're like "Woops" Or, you position it too low, I see a lot of singers do this on stage and they put both hands and they lean on the microphone and look what happens. A beginner student did that in one of my sessions the other day and I had to go up on stage and help her because she didn't know what to do. So when you're sitting at the piano its important to have the microphone positioned correctly so you can straight ahead and look down at your fingers and not be confused and have to move up and down. When I'm playing piano I will keep my mouth on the microphone so I know where I am in space. Now when you're standing up, heres a typical mic position standing up,one of the things you want to be careful of is, especially when you're not used to using the microphone is, if you put weight on it, it tends to do this as your singing and then you're kind of stuck. Either make sure that the mic itself is really tight and don't put weight on it, just put your hands here, and a lot of singer's use just one hand. You also want to get comfortable taking the mic off and don't do it when you're singing, wait for a break, and then take the mic off. Always put your hand on the stand first instead of just grabbing the mic and then make sure that you move the stand so that it doesn't upstage you. Then you want to get really comfortable with where your movements are with where that microphone center. So people start moving in the beginning and pulling the microphone away because they're focused on their movement. For singers that are more seasoned, you'll see them pull the microphone back when they're singing louder. This is when you're more advanced and you know how to control it. But you're really controlling it by what you hear. On stage you have monitors, they're either up above you or on the floor. This is what's feeding your voice back to you so you wanna make sure you have a good monitor level so you can hear yourself or its easy to go off pitch. So these are just a couple of tips for a live microphone but remember you want to get comfortable with it so it doesn't look like you're struggling. The last thing you want to think about is your microphone. You want to be thinking about your music, and what you're singing about, and your audience.

A: No. All right, do you want to learn how this works? B: Yeah. A: This is great. This is something that you can use to fool your friends. All you need is a pack of cards. And its an old principle in magic that magicians refer to as the one ahead principle and that will make sense in a moment. B: Yeah, okay. A: So let me walk you through this. The first thing I have you do is mix up the cards. So mix them up anyway you like. B: Okay, shuffle, shuffle, mix, mix. A: Now when I take the cards back, I do something a little bit tricky and I very subtly glance at the bottom card and I just did that there. B: Okay, so you know... A: So I know the bottom card and right now I know that the bottom card is the two of spades. B: Two of spades. A: Okay, and in your head you don't want to forget the two of spades. You just keep thinking two of spaces, two of spaces, two of spades. And then I spread the cards in a circle and I remember where the two of spades is. It doesn't have to be a circle, you know you can mess it up like this, as much as you want. Cards can drop on the floor, they can go around, as long as you remember the two of spades and exactly where it is. So then I say to you, touch the card that you think is the two of spades. Now you have no idea where it is, so you're going to touch a random card. You're not actually going to pick the two of spades. The chances of that are one in fifty-two. So go ahead and touch a random card. B: This one. A: And I look at it and I pretend she got it right. She actually got the nine of spades. B: Okay. A: But I go "Oh, wow, have you done this before, its so good." And then I put it to the side. And then now that I know that this is the nine of spades... B: That's what you're going to ask me to find next. A: Exactly, so I say touch the card that you think is the nine of spades. B: This one. A: This one right here? B: Yeah. A: Are you sure? B: Yes. A: You really have that gut instinct? B: You know it. A: Okay, and then I take that one out. "Oh wow, you're good." But she's not, because this is the ace of spades. In fact, it's impossible for her to have picked the nine of spades, because I've been holding it the whole time and there's only one nine of spades. B: And you're going to say... A: Now we need one more card and the only card that we're missing is the two of spades, which she should think I'm already holding in my hand. So I say, "I'm going to touch the card that I think is the ace of spades." I'm going to be talking to you about ballet. A tendu is a basic ballet step that we use and it is when your leg is extending out either in front, side or back. And when you're doing tendu you wanna make sure that your foot is massaging the floor and then coming to a full point. And then when you bring your foot back to a first position or a fifth position or whatever position your tendu is coming from, you wanna make sure that you start the movement with your toes leading back. So when you bring your foot forward, it's your heel leading forward and then your toes leading back. An important thing to remember about front, side and back is when you're going to the front, you don't wanna over cross your tendu. This will give you a very twisted position, it won't be helpful when you move to the centre. So always make sure that your foot is directly in front of your belly button or little bit out to the side but never crossed over. The same thing in the back, you want to make sure that your leg is directly behind you and not over crossed as it is in the front. When you coming to the side, you want to make sure that your foot in going to your natural turnout line. The lines of your first position is your natural turnout line, so whatever position your feet are in you want to bring your toes following that same line. You never want to go directly back, or far forward cause that's not where your natural turnout line and that's not the best way to do tendu. So when you're going to the side make sure you follow that and extend your foot fully pointed and then squeeze your foot all the way back to first position. So demonstrating tendu front, side and back I'll show you, can put your arms to the side or in first position depending on what the teacher or yourself prefers. So tendu front, and close to first. Second, close to first. Back, close to first and side, close back to first.

You need to do your research. If you really want a small big, you have to do a lot of research and find a reputable breeder or pig from a pig sanctuary or rescue. So, if you don't want to end up with a really large, hundred pound pig, lumbering around your backyard or home, you really have to do your research. They are a wonderful pet. We really enjoy our miniature pets. You can teach them to do just about anything. They're fun, they're curious, they're an amazing little animal to watch. You can harness train them quite easily and take them for walks, so that you both get your exercise and they love to snuggle. There are no national standards or any type of standardized term for the size of miniature pigs. It could be 15 pounds, it could be 15 inches tall. So the best thing to do is do a lot of research on the on your miniature pig. I'm going to teach you how to be a better singer and performer So I'm gonna talk today about common mistakes that singers make. I would say right off the bat, there's four, the first one being pitch. Pitch is non-negotiable. You have to learn to sing on pitch and learning to sing on pitch requires having an ear, listening to a lot of music, recording yourself a lot. I think recording is the number one way that I correct pitch with singers. Singers hear themselves from their inside ear not from the outer ear. When you cup your ear you can hear yourself more from your outer ear. This can cause a lot of mistakes with pitch. Pitch is a number one, non-negotiable issue with singers. If you're not singing on pitch.... Phrasing, if you're off time with your phrasing. Phrasing means timing, means rhythm. Some of the best singers in the world were drummers because their phrasing is so awesome. So getting good phrasing is a really important part of learning to sing well and its a really common mistake. A lot of people focus on the notes and it's not just the notes. Its the way you deliver those notes, the rhythm of those notes. A singer is a rhythmic instrument as well as a melodic one. Presentation. I see a lot of people make mistakes with presentation. How you present yourself, how you talk about yourself as a singer, not trying to be more than you are, which gets into the fourth one which I'll talk about in just a minute. Dress the part. If you wanna be a rock star, look like a rock star. If you wanna be a folkie, look like a folkie. Pay attention to how you're presenting yourself because you are your brand 24/7. It's not about being inauthentic, its actually about being very authentic. Its about bringing who you are to your presentation more. You wanna look the part, act the part, dress the part, look the part. Another common mistake is overreaching, trying to do things that are outside your scope. Trying to hit these crazy notes when you don't have them in your voice is not benefitting you, its not showing anybody that you can do it. You need to sing the notes you know you can deliver. That is a big part of not preparing enough. I feel like because the voice is the instrument that lives in your body and you don't have to go purchase it at the store its common for a lot of people just to think that they can sing. People ask me that quite often, "Do you think anyone can sing?" And on a professional level, I say "not really." But then we look at singers that are not great "singers" but are awesome storytellers or songwriters. So it isn't all about the singing voice. So, there's many aspects to that, it's not a straight answer, but it's learning how to feature your strengths and downplay your weaknesses. So someone who understands what they're good at and brings that to the forefront is gonna be more successful than trying to do something they can't and don't have naturally. So those are four mistakes that beginning singers make.

Today I'll unleash your inner henna artist and have you drawing henna designs all over your friends and anyone else who will sit still. Now I'm gonna teach you how to make henna paste. The recipe for henna paste is very simple but you can make it more complicated if you want to. Lets first learn how to make it the simple way and you can make any variations you want after that. The first ingredient of course is henna and I just pour the henna into the bowl and than I like to add some sugar. Sugar helps the paste stick to the skin better and keeps it from drying out to fast and flaking off. So I add about one part sugar for about four parts henna. So lets put little sugar in there and you can see there how much that is, and than I just use water to mix my paste, some people use tee, or they use lemon juice. I like to keep it very simple, like I said, and just use water. So start out with just a little bit of water and mix it up and than add more as you need it. So making henna paste is a lot like how your grandmother cooks, it's just adding ingredients until it looks just right. So, the measurements that I give you are not exact, in fact I'm not even giving you any measurements you just have to do it until it looks right. So, you get it until it's kind of a rough paste and than just add a little bit more water as you need to to get it to the consistency that you want. It's better to mix your paste a little bit to thick than to mix it too thin. It's very hard to make thin paste thicker, but it is very easy to make thick paste thinner just by adding a few more drops of water in. Even if your paste is already in your bottle you can add the water right to the bottle and than just mix it up with a skewer or something, or a chopstick, and get the consistency of the paste that you want. So right now I have a pretty thick paste so I'm gonna add a little bit more water just to thin it out a little bit. So, one thing that you need to pay attention to is something called die release and die release happens when the die that is in the henna plant, in the cells of the plant, becomes available and able to stain the skin. So, that's why we call it die release. I'm not really sure what's going on when the die is made available, it may be chemistry, it may be elves, I'm really not sure but I will show you how to tell when you have die release. So here is your fresh paste, just mix of water, sugar and henna powder, and you see that it's a pretty bright green still and once you have die release the paste turns kind of a brownish green. So you can see the difference here, this is the paste that has achieved die release and this is the paste that we're mixing right now. So, what I like to do is mix the paste to just about the consistency that I want, which is what I'm doing right now, and than I let this sit, and every type of henna has it's own time period that you need for die release. Some hennas get die release very quickly, after a few hours, some you need to leave it over night, sometimes two days. So you have to experiment with the different kinds of henna that you try. This, what I'm using now is Moroccan henna and it tends to achieve die release very quickly, so this could be ready in 3 or 4 hours.
