MINING JOBS TV Episode 3: Unskillled & Entry Level Mining Jobs Brought to you by www.miningresumes.com - Kick-start your mining career today and email us at [email protected] or call Mining Resumes on 1300 737 863 Welcome to Episode 3 of Mining Jobs TV. Hi my name is Matt and I will be speaking to you today about unskilled and entry level jobs in the Australian mining industry. Mining Jobs TV is a FREE online TV channel presenting regular episodes where we will discuss mining jobs and tips that will help you to secure a job in the industry. You may have probably heard the stories about a friend of a friend who is earning over $100,000 a year on a mine somewhere in Western Australia or Queensland and wondered how you could get a mining job too. Entry level or unskilled jobs, like trade assistants or plant operators are hard to get now as every man and his dog are applying for them. The best way to get these jobs would be to move out to the little mining towns and live there and register with all the labour hire companies, there are hundreds of them. Trades people like fitters, welders, boilermakers and electricians still have a fairly good chance of picking up work on mining sites. If you don't have a trade, doing a rigging or scaffolding course would give you a good chance at getting a job, the courses are only about 4 weeks long, but they are fairly expensive. Other unskilled or basic jobs available include cleaners, laundry workers and kitchen hands which is not difficult if you have hospitality training and experience. Talking to people who are currently working on mining sites can be a big help, especially if you have no previous experience or qualifications. It would be even better if you could get in contact with expats from your own country who are working on mining sites. They can let you know who to call and what you need to do. If you are inexperienced and unqualified you need to be fit and ready for physical labour. The work will be very repetitive and routine based with long 12 hour days, so you really need to be mentally prepared, as well as physically. Some mines will have a very high turnover of workers. This is because many people go to work on the mines not knowing what to expect. Because there can be such a high turnover, you may not start earning big money straight away, although your wages won't be small either. Once you've proved yourself to be a reliable worker, your wages should increase. Most mining companies will run police checks, as well as drug and alcohol tests. Even though there are wet mess areas on-site where workers can unwind and drink alcohol, they do have to drink in moderation and be fit-for-work before their shift starts Shutdowns are exactly what the name suggests. Every now and then mining sites need to shut down for upgrades, maintenance or repairs and they usually hire people temporarily to work during shut downs. A lot of the work is unskilled and doesn't last very long, so it's great for backpackers who want to keep on travelling and don't want to make a full-time commitment. It's also a great way to get your foot in the door and gain valuable on-site experience. To do certain mining jobs you will need to get licences and training, or 'tickets' as they are more commonly known. There are lots of different types of tickets depending on what type of work you're going to do. Some tickets can be very expensive and mines in different states require different tickets, so you really need to do your research before you start spending money on courses. Don't think that just because you're female that the mining companies and recruiters won't consider you. The mining industry in Australia is becoming increasingly gender neutral. It's not just cooking and cleaning jobs either on offer for women either; more and more women are working on Australian mining sites, and in some cases, companies even prefer women for certain jobs. For example, a popular job for women on mining sites is driving a dump truck because research has shown that women are easier on the multi-million dollar equipment yet still get the job done. It's most important to ensure you have the resume professionally worded and designed to stand out from your competitors. We highly recommended Mining Resumes to prepare your resume as they are the industry leaders in resume preparation for clients seeking jobs in the mining and oil & gas industry. They can be contacted via phone on 1300 RESUME or have a look at their website miningresumes.com with package details and samples browse that demonstrate their quality and experience. The skills required for Plant and Machinery Operations occupations in the minerals and energy industry are usually gained by experience in other related positions or through training programs conducted by individual companies, training providers or courses at TAFEWA. The mines Safety and Inspections Regulations of 1995, which govern the mining industry in Western Australia, require an individual to be 18 years of age to be employed in an underground mine. Also a number of occupations require a current license: for example, a truck driver must hold the appropriate license. The operation of individual plant and machinery items requires appropriate certification, provided as on-the-job training. This equips operators with a range of skills and opportunities to develop a career pathway into positions reflecting skill, experience, leadership and responsibility.

Adani Rail A Benefit To Other Mines Govt The Turnbull Government says a $900 million concessional loan to build a rail link to the Adani Carmichael coal mine would also benefit five other mining projects in Central Queensland. Federal Resources and Northern Australia Minister Matt Canavan said the rail corridor would unlock a 'job bonanza' and major economic gains in the Galilee Basin. Earlier in the week, Mr Canavan said Adani has assured the federal government the rail line can be open to multiple users. The Government predict the rail corridor will generate 15,000 direct jobs in the Galilee Basin. Liberal senator James Paterson told Sky News the jobs the rail construction would create 'was nothing to sneeze at' and the project would be 'warmly welcomed by locals'. Federal Labor says the case has still not been made for the concessional loan, Shadow Assistant Treasurer Andrew Leigh says the job estimates are higher than he had seen. 'The federal Labor's view on the Adani mine is that it needs to stack up economically and environmentally,' he told Sky News. http://www.skynews.com.au/news/politics/federal/2017/04/17/adani-rail-a-benefit-to-other-mines--govt.html

Mt Moss Mine is the largest magnetite deposit on Australia's east coast. The mine is situated in the old Ewan mining field, 110km west of Townsville in North Queensland, which saw pioneer Australians explore and mine rich copper and tin in the area from 1890 until the 1930's. Since 1958, various international mining companies including BHP and MIM have explored the area for copper, lead, zinc and tin mineralisation. In 2005 Curtain Bros bought from Jervois Mining NL (a small, publically listed exploration company) mining lease ML10171 and set up a subsidiary company called Mt Moss Mining. From acquisition, Curtain Bros commenced the construction of site workshop facilities, offices, laboratory, camp and accommodation facilities as well as 50 km of roads to a standard suitable to haul large tonnages of iron ore product. During the construction phase, over 30,000 meters of combined percussion chip and diamond core drilling was completed to delineate a magnetite iron ore resource in excess of 20Mt. The potential for significant additional resources containing copper and zinc credits is very high. Mining commenced from the Willett's Knob, stage 1 pit in 2007. A stage 2 pit cutback commenced in November 2007 and was completed in early December 2008 to a depth of approximately 70 meters. Mount Moss Mining is processing stockpiled magnetite ore through two separate benification circuits to produce two saleable product streams. The mine employs over 75 personnel working across all mining areas including mobile and fixed plant operators, and mechanical and electrical trades, geology, mines engineering, metallurgy, administration, catering and housekeeping.

On the one hand, this study is from 2012 and the figures may have ever so slightly changed. The reason I cite it as opposed to newer sources, is that they only list totally numbers in mining etc, not numbers by profession. Ie, Newer sources state that mining in Queensland is 15.1% Female. But they go to great lengths to avoid the fact that most of those women are in clerical/administration roles, and that women only make up around 2%-5% of the actual shitty hard labour jobs. https://web.archive.org/web/20120325153610/http://www.communities.qld.gov.au/resources/women/resources/about/qld-women-at-a-glance.pdf

Jobs For Gladstone Queensland. Bechtel Liquefied Natural Gas Plant. The first consignment of Queensland liquefied natural gas (LNG) has left the port of Gladstone without a single Australian crew member showing a lack of commitment to local jobs by multi-billion dollar gas companies. Maritime Union of Australia Assistant National Secretary Warren Smith said it was an insult to out-of-work Australians that no local seafarers, officers, or engineers are engaged on the Methane Rita Andrea gas tanker, chartered by BG Group. “Company projections show there is a potential for 250 jobs on BG vessels shipping out of Gladstone alone,” Smith said. “There’s another 600 up for grabs once the other production facilities come online. “These are good, skilled, long-term job opportunities for the people of Gladstone, in contrast to the boom-bust, temporary jobs that were on offer during the construction phase of Curtis Island. “Japanese-owned gas tankers plying the North West shelf trade have long-held local content agreements that have been of mutual benefit to Australian workers and the company. “I would like for BG Group to offer something similar to the people of Queensland in return for profiting off the back of the resources all Australians own.” Local Organiser Jason Miners said the Gladstone community was worried about future employment once the construction boom came to an end. “I have spoken to a wide cross-section of the community, including local Government, local business and the Aboriginal community and members from each of the groups have raised concerns about the creeping unemployment rate,” Miners said. “A potential 800 direct jobs could mitigate a future job and economic crisis as well as provide training opportunities for the region’s young people.” Produced by Jamie McMechan & Ashleigh Telford - Maritime Union of Australia.
