Finding Something Unexpected in an Abandoned Copper Mine

14:48
What an unexpected discovery! Paul and I never imagined finding what we found deep in this abandoned copper mine in Arizona. The Warren-Bisbee Mine's obscure entrance was basically a rabbit hole and didn't look too promising. However, once we gained entry by sliding in on our backs, the tunnels opened up and were surprisingly extensive. One tunnel led us deep into the mine to an inner area where we found -- something. Something impressive. Something rare that I've only seen a few times in abandoned mines over the last seven years or so. And it's all here in this video. Enjoy! Don't forget: New videos are released at midnight (Pacific Time) on the 1st, 10th, and 20th of each month. View and use the information in my videos at your own risk. All abandoned mines (especially the ones in my videos) are very dangerous and should not be entered under any circumstances. No potentially life-threatening, dangerous, or legal decisions and assumptions should be made based on information in my videos.
121. SunMine: How solar is transforming an old mining town

06:02
SunMine is a large sun-tracking solar project built in Kimberley B.C. on a mining brownfield. It's all part of the reinvention of the beautiful mountain city in southeastern British Columbia as a modern, solar powered tourism town. The mining town was founded in 1917 and was once home to the largest lead-zinc mine in the world. Since the shut down in 2001 Kimberley has focused on building a mountain tourism economy with more golf courses than traffic lights. The Secret World Of Gold | Gold Mining - Geographic History

42:41
The Secret World Of Gold | Gold Mining - Geographic History. It is impossible to know the exact date that humans first began to mine gold, but some of the oldest known gold artifacts were found in the Varna Necropolis in Bulgaria. The graves of the necropolis were built between 4700 and 4200 BC, indicating that gold mining could be at least 7000 years old. A group of German and Georgian archaeologists claims the Sakdrisi site in southern Georgia, dating to the 3rd or 4th millennium BC, may be the world's oldest known gold mine. The Ibaloi Community Takes a Stand Against Climate Change in the Philippines

03:52
Since the 1980s, Ibaloi community members have successfully blocked environmentally destructive open-pit mining on their lands in a forested mountain range in the Philippines ravaged by Typhoon Haiyan. Now, the community’s youth are taking on the struggle as part of the People's Center for Cordillera Culture (Dap-ayan ti Kultura iti Kordilyera). They are part of a growing global movement of young climate activists taking a stand against the climate crisis. They’ll take their demands to the Paris Climate Change Conference in December. Hear and share their stories. http://www.greengrants.org/youthonclimate. We all have reasons to fight climate change. Find yours and take a stand. #YouthOnClimate

Communities looking for coal mine answers

02:28
http://www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http://www.facebook.com/ctvvi CUMBERLAND - Despite having its history deeply rooted in the early days of coal mining, this village in the Comox Valley is adding its voice to others questioning whether a possible mine in the region is a good idea. Councillors for the village of Cumberland passed a motion calling for a more thorough environmental review of the Raven Underground Coal Project, which is being proposed for the Union Bay area. The village joins Courtenay, Comox and the Comox Valley Regional District in looking for an independent provincial baseline study as well as a federal joint review panel to look into the project. The communities are particularly interested in having aquifer mapping completed. The Wilderness Committee congratulated the municipalities on their unified approach to the proposed mine and said that environmental problems created by the project would be too great for the area. The committee's Vancouver Island Campaigner Torrance Coste said the mine would only have a lifespan of 16 years and would threaten several sustainable industries in the area. 11 Things Found After Japanese Tsunami

07:42
Some of the craziest things will wash up after a big storm like an entire yacht on top of a building and soccer ball across the country! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 6. A Japanese Dock This piece of debris happened to be part of a Japanese dock that was torn from its moorings during the tsunami and washed up on the shores of Oregon and brought back what researchers believe to be about 100 tons of sea life. Scientists from the Oregon State University state that the 66-foot-long deck has around 13 pounds of organisms per square foot. The dock did not show any signs of radiation from the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown caused by the tsunami, but it did pose the threat of carrying invasive species. What that means is that these creatures that aren’t natives to the area could potentially throw the local ecosystems out of whack and cause irreparable damage to the native wildlife, such as the dread zebra mussel. 5. A Mystery Creature There have been some unusual things that have washed up on random shores after tsunamis, this being one of them. After the 2011 tsunami hit, this giant white mass had been washed out onto the shore of Japan and had many of the locals, along with everyone who watched this video on YouTube, wondering what it even was? Some thought it to be a brand new creature that had risen from the dark depths of the ocean floor while others speculated it was merely a large rock or boulder. Don’t worry, officials have concluded that this isn’t some new species that’s going to wipe us out. They simply stated that it’s most likely just a mass of whale blubber from the carcass of a dead whale that’s pretty much unrecognizable. 4. A Shipping Tote Back in November of 2014, this shipping tote had washed up near the shores of Seal Rock in Oregon. This 4-by-5 foot plastic shipping tote had been floating out at sea for the last 3 years since the tsunami struck and amassed around 200 blue mussels that were attached to it. Like the dock that was found in 2012, this tote was a potential host for carrying invasive species and scientist eventually determined it as a non-threat to the surrounding environment. Still, the amount of debris, the total estimated to be around 18.11 million tons with 70 percent of the debris sinking to the bottom of the ocean, is still rather high and is still washing up years after that tragic event took place. 3. Various Trash A barge from the fishing town of Ucluelet in British Columbia had carried in around “super sacks” of debris caused by the tsunami. Those sacks are designed to hold up to 1,000 pounds, so you can only imagine how heavy all that weight could possibly be. Ever since the tsunami struck, there have been volunteer pickups in the town where local and Japanese students have gotten involved. They’ve managed to collect all different sorts of garbage such as styrofoam, pieces of Japanese houses, and other debris. Though they’ve made progress, their results haven’t been achieved through smooth sailing. The coastline of Ucluelet is described as remote and rugged which made the cleanups very difficult and the fact that there was already debris unrelated to the tsunami already there makes for even more trash than expected. 2. An Entire Ship This yacht happened to be discovered in the Iwate Prefecture in Northeastern Japan in the town of Otsuchi nearly two months after the tsunami had hit. The ship weighs in at an incredible 200 tons and it’s a huge surprise that the two-story building that is supporting all that weight is still somehow managing to keep from collapsing. It’s hard to even process the amount of force needed to lift the ship. 1. A House As one of the most powerful and deadly disasters that can occur in nature, the tsunami is one that leaves devastation in its wake. Their sheer force can only be imagined by those who have never witnessed what it can be capable of at first hand and even then you can never come close to doing it justice. Take for example this house that was a part of the Fukushima debris. This was someone’s entire home where they built a life for themselves around it and in a matter of moments, it was swept off its foundation and carried out into the sea, along with what is estimated to be another 200,000 buildings.

Authorities have shut down scores of mines in the northwestern province of Cordoba in a crackdown on illegal mining that started in September. About 400 police took part in the sweep. Communities near the unregulated mines suffer from the "improper use of mercury and other contaminating substances" found in soil and bodies of water, officials said. Mine Cristal, mining quartz crystals

08:02
www.minecristal.ca Stay informed about our new videos: subscribe to our YouTube channel "Mine Cristal". This mine is located in Bonsecours, Quebec, Canada. Photos and video clips shown here date from 1989 - 2012. The open-pit mine produces splendid quartz crystals with exceptional clarity. The largest single crystals measure 60 cm (24 inches) in length. Since mining began in 1989, 32 types, or morphologies of quartz crystals have been catalogued. Geological research into the origins of these crystals has revealed that they formed at this location some 300 million years ago under extreme conditions of heat and pressure. We harvest crystals in the mine only as needed, to supply our store with a sufficient quantity of quartz crystals. Exceptionally (for a mine), we harvest all the crystals by hand and without the use of dynamite. It is a privilege for us to participate in the discovery and extraction of these true gems of nature. The extraction process is done in a manner which respects both the environment and the crystals: we endeavor to keep the crystals whole and in a pristine state. In the museum and the store, our crystals are presented in an untouched, natural state. Amazingly, each crystal is an intricate work of art made by Nature; no two are alike and this makes them even more fascinating! Mine Cristal is considered by experts to be a “geological gem,” one of Canada’s great natural sites, due to it’s unique and abundant mineralogical deposits.

Galena Mining on track to begin development of base metals project in 2019

09:18
Galena Mining Ltd (ASX:G1A) managing director Alex Molyneux speaks to Proactive Investors about the base metals-focused company’s Abra Lead-Silver Project in Western Australia. Galena’s recently completed scoping study at Abra has confirmed as an economically and technically robust opportunity with potential to become a long-life, high-margin base metals mine. “Galena as a company is very focused on starting the development of the Abra project in 2019,” Molyneux says. He continues, “There’s a lot happening in the second half of 2018 to lead you into that. The first thing is, as we said, we’re immediately moving the scoping study into a pre-feasibility study, so the company will declare reserves, we’ll put a lot more information out around the economics of the project. “At the same time there is the infill drilling program continuing, so there’s going to be more drilling results … that will lead into a revised resource. There’s work also going on with respect to offtakes, logistics contracts, all those kinds of practical pieces of work that happen as you go into the development phase.”

10 Unusual Abandoned Places in Canada

07:26
From abandoned islands, to obscure hidden places, these are 10 UNUSUAL Abandoned Places in Canada Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 10. Cole Island Location - British Columbia 9.Bankhead Location - Alberta 8.The Guild Inn Location - Ontario Locally known as The Guild, this abandoned place was once an impressive hotel in Scarborough Toronto. Since 1914, the property has switched owners many times. It was even used as a Foreign Mission House for the Roman Catholic Church. What's more impressive than the buildings, is the 90 acres around them. The families that owned the property combined many different architectural styles to create gardens that could rival any property in Europe. For a long time everything on the property was abandoned, nowadays, the gardens serve as a great spot for intimate weddings, and there have been major talks about reviving the hotel too. 7.Stanley Park Zoo Location - British Columbia 6.Val Jalbert Location - Quebec. My French is not great; so lets just get it out of the way; Val Jalbert is located in Quebec and it is listed as a ghost town. Its easy to see why with photos like this one. The village sprung to existence because of the successful pulp mill in the area. What is a pulp mill you ask? Its an integral part for the creation of PAPER AND STUFF! You take some wood chips add some magic and then you have FIBERBOARD ! The village was founded in 1901 and by 1929 all the homes in the area were boarded up and everyone was ordered to leave…. In the 1960s the location was transformed into a public park. YAY ! Now everyone can enjoy the nature and check out the homes of the workers that used to work in the mill. 5.Celanese Power House Location - Alberta 4.Grain Elevators Location - Alberta This is not just one site, the countryside of Alberta seems to be littered with dilapidated grain elevators. Like this one in Herronton, a very small town near Calgary. Or this one in Brant. Grain elevators commonly refer to buildings that store grain, but they can also refer to what we see in these pictures, towers containing bucket elevators that load up containers with grain. Locals have tried to preserve as much as they can, and have even started the Alberta Grain Elevator Society ! 3.Camp 30 Location - Ontario 2.Partridge Island Location - New Brunswick This island has quite a long history, located within the city of Saint John, the island was first used as a quarantine station in 1785. It also had a lighthouse and military post on it. During the Irish Potato Famine it is estimated that around 30,000 people passed through the island for processing, with around 1200 actually dying there. And by 1890, 78,000 immigrants passed through the island a year. The most famous part of the island is the Celtic cross dedicated to those who passed on the island. There was a museum near the cross that operated until 1995. Since then, the island has become almost a rite of passage for teenagers in the area. With so much to explore, its easy to see how you can be attracted to the haunting past of the land. 1.Queen of Sidney Location - British Columbia

Khewra Salt Mine - World 2nd Largest Salt Mine | Complete Video

10:11
The Khewra Salt Mine (or Mayo Salt Mine) is located in Khewra, north of Pind Dadan Khan, an administrative subdivision of Jhelum District, Punjab Region, Pakistan, which rises from the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It is Pakistan's largest and oldest salt mine and the world's second largest. It is a major tourist attraction, drawing up to 250,000 visitors a year. Its history dates back to its discovery by Alexander's troops in 320 BC, but it started trading in the Mughal era. The main tunnel at ground level was developed by Dr. H. Warth, a mining engineer, in 1872 during British rule. After independence, the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation took over the mine, which still remains the largest source of salt in the country, producing more than 350,000 tons per annum of about 99% pure halite. Estimates of the reserves of salt in the mine vary from 82 million tons to 600 million tons. The Khewra Salt Mine is also known as Mayo Salt Mine, in honour of Lord Mayo, who visited it as Viceroy of India. The mine is a part of a salt range that originated about 800 million years ago, when evaporation of a shallow sea followed by geological movement formed a salt range that stretched for about 300 kilometers (185 miles). The salt reserves at Khewra were discovered when Alexander the Great crossed the Jhelum and Mianwali region during his Indian campaign. The mine was discovered, however, not by Alexander, nor by his allies, but by his army's horses, when they were found licking the stones. Ailing horses of his army also recovered after licking the rock salt stones. During the Mughal era the salt was traded in various markets, as far away as Central Asia. On the downfall of the Mughal empire, the mine was taken over by Sikhs. Hari Singh Nalwa, the Sikh Commander-in-Chief, shared the management of the Salt Range with Gulab Singh, the Raja of Jammu. The former controlled the Warcha mine, while the latter held Khewra. The salt quarried during Sikh rule was both eaten and used as a source of revenue. In 1872, some time after they had taken over the Sikhs' territory, the British developed the mine further. They found the mining to have been inefficient, with irregular and narrow tunnels and entrances that made the movement of labourers difficult and dangerous. The supply of water inside the mine was poor, and there was no storage facility for the mined salt. The only road to the mine was over difficult, rocky terrain. To address these problems the government levelled the road, built warehouses, provided a water supply, improved the entrances and tunnels, and introduced a better mechanism for excavation of salt. Penalties were introduced to control salt smuggling. While working with Geological Survey of India in the 1930s and 1940s, Birbal Sahni found evidence of angiosperms, gymnosperms and insects from the Cambrian period inside the mine. Location Khewra Salt Mine is situated in Pind Dadan Khan Tehsil of Jhelum District. Located about 200 km (125 miles) from Islamabad and Lahore, it is accessed via the M2 motorway, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) off the Lilla interchange while going towards Pind Dadan Khan on the Lilla road. The mine is in mountains that are part of a salt range, a mineral-rich mountain system extending about 200 km from the Jhelum river south of Pothohar Plateau to where the Jhelum river joins the Indus river. Khewra mine is about 288 meters (945 feet) above sea level and about 730 meters (2400 feet) into the mountain from the mine entrance. The underground mine covers an area of 110 km2 (43 sq. miles).
