It can be seen that the external clock pulses (pulses to be counted) are fed directly to each of the J-K flip-flops in the counter chain and that both the J and K inputs are all tied together in toggle mode, but only in the first flip-flop, flip-flop FFA (LSB) are they connected HIGH, logic “1” allowing the flip-flop to toggle on every clock pulse. Then the synchronous counter follows a predetermined sequence of states in response to the common clock signal, advancing one state for each pulse. The J and K inputs of flip-flop FFB are connected directly to the output QA of flip-flop FFA, but the J and K inputs of flip-flops FFC and FFD are driven from separate AND gates which are also supplied with signals from the input and output of the previous stage. These additional AND gates generate the required logic for the JK inputs of the next stage.

Asynchronous 4-bit binary counter (from 0 to 9) in Logisim

Just practicing for school. It's an asynchronous 4-bit binary counter that counts from 0 to 9 in binary and then resets back to 0. Made with JK flip-flops that trigger on the falling edges of the clock signal. When the counter comes to 10 (1010 in binary), resets back to 0 with help of an AND-gate. Can be used for 7-segment displays, but requires a BCD-to-7 segment decoder.

BCD Counter Using Two Dual JK Flip Flop Chips (HD74LS76AP)

This is a demostration of a self built BCD Counter circuit. It uses two JK flip flop (4 actual JK flip flops) chips to count, and a couple AND gates, a NOR gate and a NAND gate to control the reset logic. I have also added a LED on the clock output (by using a astable 555 timer) as well as 4 LED's showing the binary output of the BCD counter. Then I used a BCD to 7-segment decoder in order to display the decimals on the 7-seg display. The DIP switch is used to send a logic high to the clear pins of the JK flip flops in order for them to operate. The JK's have a logic high preset, and the J & K inputs of the first ones are tied together at logic high, the other J & K inputs are tied together respectively, with a little bit of AND logic in there to insure proper counting. Lastly there is a logic circuit to reset the counter at binary 1010, by sending a logic low to the clear pins of the JK's, thus resetting the chip to zero. the reset logic employs a self made 1010 binary decoder to ensure a logic low output only when binary 1010 is reached in the count. After it is reset to 0000, the reset circuit is driven back high. NOTE: In the video I say using two JK flip flops, by that I mean two dual JK flip chips. Each chip containing two JK flip flops, making it mod 16 counter, but we cut it to only count ten states (0-9) by use of a reset logic circuit.

Design a 4-Bit Truncated Sequence Counter (Using JK Flip Flops)

In this video I go through the process of designing a counter that counts from 0-9. With four bits, you could make a counter that counts from 0-15, so this is a counter with a truncated sequence. The design for this counter is done using JK flip flops and is a fairly involved process. The design itself is not extremely difficult, it can just take a while because there are several steps and there are 4 bits, so the J and K inputs to four flip flops must be determined.
