Imagine a serene, idyllic isle where humpback whales breed, where corals and rare marine biodiversity thrive. This is Camiguin Norte. The very existence of this island is threatened by Black Sand Mining - the process of extracting magnetite from beaches having rich deposits of it. Black Sand Mining leads to coastal erosion, sea pollution, loss of habitat for marine life and reduced protection from natural calamities. This must be stopped before it's too late! The residents of Camiguin Norte are saying NO TO BLACK SAND MINING. Let's help them so that their voice can be heard - loud and clear! BLACK SAND MINING

02:12
Magnetite mining has gained notoriety these days. Also known as black sand mining, different groups have spearheaded campaigns against this massive extraction of magnetite which poses danger on the environment and livelihood along coastal communities in the country. However, the government averred that magnetite mining has the potential of boosting the country's mineral sector, create more jobs and start the local industry rolling. Underscoring the importance of magnetite, as a major ingredient of iron, extraction of this metallic mineral will be inevitable if the country is to develop its local steel industry, leading to its industrialization.

Ira Gamerman - Come Again Camiguin #EISE CAMIGUIN Sonnets 2 of 4

02:22
In April of 2015, AustraliAmerican theater collective EVERYTHING IS EVERYWHERE took a writers retreat in Camiguin- a remote and beautiful Filipino Island full of volcanoes, hot springs, and Sunken Cemeteries. We gave ourselves an assignment to write and record a video sonnet in response to the overwhelming beauty of Camiguin. We used the term “sonnet” very loosely (songs and monologues totally counted). The result is four unique video performances, set in various locations at Action Geckos Resort in Camiguin. #EISE CAMIGUIN SONNETS- WATCH ALL 4!: 1.Jessica Bellamy- “This Is A Sonnet” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPAHl4eHL-E 2. Camiguin Island - May 2015

04:51
Barely 240 square kilometers in land area, Camiguin is the second smallest island of the Philippines in both area and population. It is just 23 kilometers at its longest and just a bit more than 14 kilometers at its widest. Within this small area lie seven volcanoes. Lovely little Camiguin is the island “born of fire.” The name Camiguin is derived from the native word “Kamagong”, a species of the ebony tree that thrives near Lake Mainit in the province of Surigao del Norte, the region from which the earlier inhabitants of the islands, the Manobos, came. Kinamigin, the local language of Camiguin, is closely related to the Manobo language. An earlier Spanish geography book writes the island as "Camiguing". There is reason to suppose the Spaniards dropped the final g. Much of the island was formed through earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In the late 1800s, for example, the eruption of Mt. Vulcan submerged the old town of Catarman – pushing it below the sea, leaving behind the ruins of a church and its bell tower. The Sunken Cemetery, now marked with a huge cross, was also one of the areas in this old town. Aside from this, Camiguin’s natural attractions keep visitors coming. White Island, a sandbar, and Mantigue Island, a smaller island off the shores of Camiguin, are great for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Cool, refreshing waters amid trees, ferns, and boulders can be found at waterfalls like Katibawasan Falls or the more remote Tuawasan Falls. Just as refreshing is a dip in the Soda and Santo Niño Cold Spring. It offers waters at 20 degrees Celsius and small fishes that will give you a unique massage! In contrast, there’s Ardent Hot Spring - 40 degree Celsius waters heated by Mt. Hibok-Hibok, an active volcano. Lastly, Camiguin is best known for – lanzones fruit, a sweet fruit about the size of a grape, with light brown skin and translucent flesh. Its harvest is heralded by the weeklong Lanzones Festival every October. Colorful costumes, street dancing, and parades mark the celebration. This was my first time to go to Camiguin and we definitely had a summer full of fun with my loved ones. We will surely visit the island again especially for the "panaad" every lenten season.
