Copper mining at its most efficient

01:51
At Sweden largest copper mine, Boliden Aitik, it takes 1000 kgs of earth to obtain three kgs of copper. The mine, located near Gällivare inside the Arctic Circle, is only profitable because its processes are highly automated. Mined ore is transported by a conveyor belt seven kilometers long to a processing plant where giant mills grind it into sand from which the copper can be extracted. The entire site process -- including the concentrator plant, conveyor systems and pumping stations -- is controlled by ABB's Extended Automation System 800xA. ABB's scope of supply also included a gas-insulated substation, a harmonics and power factor correction filter system, low-voltage switchgear as well as maintenance and service.

Five underground iron mines operated in Ely, Minnesota over eight decades. The miners and the mines contributed to the building of a community and the production of steel to build America. Over half of the ore extracted in Ely came from the Pioneer Mine. When those mines ceased operations, another clear Minnesota lake was created. Here's how the mining was done. Mine workers seated STORYLINE More than 2-thousand scared, exhausted and hungry workers have been rescued after spending hours deep in a crippled gold mine as efforts gathered speed on Thursday to bring hundreds more to the surface. There were no casualties on Wednesday when a pressurised air pipe snapped at the mine near Johannesburg and tumbled down a shaft, causing extensive damage to an elevator and trapping more than 3-thousand miners more than a mile underground. The accident prompted allegations that one of South Africa's most important industries was cutting safety corners in the name of profit and complaints from the government that mine owner Harmony Gold Mining Company did not bother to inform it of the potential crisis. Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica said she and President Thabo Mbeki learned of the accident on the late evening news. Mining officials had discovered the elevator was inoperable just after 0600 local time (0500 GMT) on Wednesday and news was first made public by the miners union at 2100 local time. Sonjica said during a visit to the Elandsrand mine at Carletonville - a town in South Africa's mining heartland near Johannesburg - that health and safety legislation would be "tightened up." The mine's general manager Stan Bierschenk said that while morale was low underground, miners perked up as soon as they were rescued. He said most had complained of heat exhaustion and fatigue. The hundreds of workers who remained underground were all near a ventilation shaft and had been given water, but no food for fear of provoking a scramble among miners who had been underground for nearly two days, according to Peter Bailey, health and safety chairman for the National Mineworkers Union. Bierschenk said the company hoped to complete the rescue by lunchtime, although Bailey said late afternoon was more realistic. Last year, 199 mineworkers died in accidents, mostly rock falls, the government Mine Health and Safety Council reported in September. One worker was killed last week in a mine adjacent to Elandsrand. Will higher copper prices trigger a rise in copper exploration and M&A activity? Gianni Kovacevic

05:46
We caught up with Gianni Kovacevic, Executive Chairman of CopperBank at the 2018 International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC). Despite the massive rise in copper consumption that will be triggered by the demand for electricity and the Electric Vehicle (EV) revolution, the implications have not yet dawned on investors. Gianni shares his expertise on what his copper price expectations are for the next 12 months and whether higher copper prices will trigger a big rise in exploration for the metal, or higher M&A activity, or both. IMARC returns to the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre from 28 - 31 October 2019. For more information please visit http://imarcmelbourne.com/ About IMARC The International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) is where global mining leaders connect with technology, finance and the future. Sewell, Mining Town in The Andes | The City of Stairs, Chile

05:13
Sewell, Mining Town in The Andes | The City of Stairs, Chile The mining town of Sewell is located on the slopes of the Andes on Cerro Negro at an altitude of between 2,000 and 2,500 metres. It is 50 miles south of Santiago and 26 miles up the mountain from Rancagua. First called El Teniente, the town was once an isolated copper mine but is now an uninhabited historical site and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been recognized as a great cultural and architectural work, a unique mountain community that defied the elements and the difficulties to prosper: the only one like it in Chile. Sewell is known as the "city of stairs", housed miners and employees who worked in what was the world's largest underground mine, El Teniente. Copper deposits were known to exist at el Teniente from the 15th century when raw materials were exported by the Spanish. In 1897 the owner of the mining rights initiated a survey of the copper seams and discovered a huge potential for extracting copper which would require great investment. An approach was made in 1903 to the North American mining engineer William Braden. Braden arrived in Chile in 1904 and began acquiring the property. Together with E W Nash, president of the American Smelting Company and Barton Sewell, the founder and Vice-President they created the Braden Copper Company in 1904. In 1905 they bought the Chilean copper mine. In 1915 the town was re-named Sewell after Barton Sewell the company’s first president. Over the next two years the infrastructure was developed and machinery was imported from the United States. By 1906 the first mill and concentrator had been erected, a lift and electricity generator installed. The installations were cutting edge technology of the day to be used in an extremely remote and hostile environment. Mining was officially authorised to begin in 1905. A narrow gauge railroad line between Sewell and Rancagua was started in 1907 and was in full use by 1911. The operation base and administrative headquarters were located at Rancagua which rapidly developed into a town. A new town was developed at Sewell where the mine was located. Electricity was generated at Coya and the huge buckets of the copper ore snaked down the hill to the smelted works at Caletones. By 1918 the Sewell mining camp housed 14,000 people, but was largely abandoned in the 1970s. The town was built on a terrain too steep for wheeled vehicles around a large central staircase rising from the railway station. Along its route formal squares of irregular shape with ornamental trees and plants constituted the main public spaces or squares of the town. Off the central staircase, paths ran along the contours leading to smaller squares and secondary staircases linking the town’s different levels. The buildings lining the streets are timber, often painted in vivid green, yellow, red and blue. By the early 1960s it had a population of 16,000, men, women and children of many nationalities. Despite all goods having to be brought in by narrow gauge railroad the camp was a complete city in itself. The railroad was also the only way in for the workers and their families. Sewell was known as the city of stairs as there were no roads. The mine became the largest and deepest underground mine in the world, with about nine hundred miles of underground galleries. After the death of Barton Sewell in 1915, the Guggenheim brothers began to open new copper mines in the north of Chile and took control of the Braden Copper Company, by 1916 they owned 95 percent of the company. Despite being prosperous, conditions at the mine were hard and dangerous. In 1945 a major tragedy occurred when a fire in the entrance to the mine caused smoke to enter the galleries below causing the deaths of 355 workers. This led to a government investigation and a national debate on safety legislation and the power wielded by foreign companies. The company responded by developing a large department for industrial safety. By the 1950s Chile had become the second largest copper producer in the world. In 1967 the Chilean government gained a 51% share of the mine and in 1971 the industry was nationalised and the company became a division of the Copper Corporation of Chile. This brought changes and a decision was taken to move the population of Sewell further down the valley, in order to provide better facilities and soon after 1977 it was dismantled. Sewell is the only mountain industrial mining settlement of considerable size of the 20th century to have been built for year-round use. A bridge in the mining town of Sewell, atop the Andes mountains some hundred kilometers south of Santiago, the capital city of Chile. First woman killed in Chile mining accident

00:29
Chile registered its first death of a female worker in the mining industry over the weekend when a 25-year-old truck driver was killed after her vehicle flipped over near a mine on Saturday. Elena Avila Zepeda, the worker, was the first woman killed while employed in the industry, according to the National Geology and Mining Service, or Sernageomin. Avila Zepeda was operating the dump truck in the northern town of Los Vilos about two kilometers (1.2 miles) from a dump for mining waste when investigators say she most likely lost control of the vehicle. The truck plunged 20 metres (65 feet) into a pit, police said. Avila Zepeda was employed on a full-time contract and had been working as a truck driver at the Los Pelambres mine for two months, local media reported. Of the 229,375 people employed by the mining industry across Chile, 17,061 are women, according to Fox News Latino.

Copperbank Resource Corp (CNSX:CBK) Executive Chairman on Inevitability of Copper Price Rise

14:20
Copperbank Resource Corp (CNSX:CBK) (OTCMKTS:CPPKF) (FRA:9CP) Executive Chairman Gianni Kovacevic tells the story of energy and the market place, from the first discovery of oil in Texas at Spindletop in 1901, to the surge in Chinese oil usage in the 2000s. Kovacevic points out that oil and copper have typically had a 90 percent correlation but he suggests that with copper falling grades and a lack of new discoveries, copper will separate from oil. He predicts copper will need to get to the $5-$6 range as a result and notes that 45 percent of the world’s primary copper comes from Peru and Chile. In anticipation of this inevitable surge, Copperbank’s portfolio is heavily invested in the copper market. ************************ Check out our website: https://midasletter.com ************************ SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube: http://bit.ly/MidasLetterYoutube SUBSCRIBE to our 2nd YouTube Channel - Midas Letter Clips: https://bit.ly/2rtQzgy SUBSCRIBE to our Newsletter: http://bit.ly/MidasLetterNewsletter Download Our Podcast on iTunes: http://bit.ly/MidasLetterPodcast ************************ Follow Us on Twitter: http://bit.ly/MidasLetterTwitter Like Us on Instagram: http://bit.ly/MidasLetterInsta Like Us on Facebook: http://bit.ly/MidasLetterFacebook ************************ #WeedStocks #MidasLetter

Getriebelose Mühlenantriebe (GMD) von ABB

07:28
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ABB is world market leader in the gearless mill drives (GMD) business. GMD systems consist of transformers, an E-house and a ring motor - giant electric motors with the mill itself acting as a rotor and the surrounding ring as stator. An ABB ring motor can achieve an outer diameter of 24 meters, with a capacity of up to 28 MW. GMDs are typically installed in copper, gold and iron ore mines but can be applied for cement mills as well.  As a variable speed drive, the GMD allows the mill to start smoothly, without any mechanical stress, and fulfills the customer's requirements for flexibility and adjustability of the process, enabling maximum control over the grinding process. Furthermore, ABB gearless mill drive systems feature several benefits when compared with conventional geared drive systems: superior reliability, availability, extended life span and improved energy efficiency.  The history of gearless mill drives started in 1969 when ABB installed the world's first GMD which is still in operation today. Having sold over 100 units around the globe, the company has broken every record while meeting the challenges of extreme elevations, transportation restrictions as well as ever increasing power ratings and mill sizes.
