How To Structurally Support Load Bearing Walls – Truss Joist Floor Framing Repairs

10:42
http://www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/repairs/framing/index.html Click on this link for more information about structural engineering, floor framing and home building. This video will provide you with everything you need to know about this type of repair, but will provide you with a few examples of how you can support load bearing walls that are creating problems in the floor framing, because the home wasn't built correctly. You can use double joist to support structural walls and truss joists blocks for truss joists type framing, but you should always check with a structural engineer for clarification. These videos are only meant to give you ideas and will not work all the time or for every type of building..

New Mudsill on A Humpy Foundation

01:19
www.protradecraft.com | SUBSCRIBE please When an old house comes down to the foundation, you have a clean slate for plumb, level, and square. Sort of. Humpy old foundations can be a bad starting point. To make sure the the floor framing is level, begin by shimming the mud sills using a transit or laser. To reduce the effects of out of level corners and big humpy bumps, use thick mudsills that can be half-lapped at the corners. Screw the corners together to create a solid structure less prone to variations in the foundation. You can staple the sill seal to the bottom of the mudsill before laying it down, and the masons can fill the gaps under the mudsill with mortar. Now you’ve got a solid flat substrate to frame a floor on that will be level and flat. What is a Shear Wall

03:58
http://www.learningconstruction.com Step by step tutorial: In structural engineering, a shear wall is a wall composed of braced panels (also known as shear panels) to counter the effects of lateral load acting on a structure. Wind and seismic loads are the most common loads braced wall lines are designed to counteract. Under several building codes, including the International Building Code (where it is called a braced wall line) and Uniform Building Code, all exterior wall lines in wood or steel frame construction must be braced. Depending on the size of the building some interior walls must be braced as well. A more traditional method is to use let-in diagonal wood bracing throughout the wall line, and a newer alternative is let-in metal T-bracing but these methods may not be viable for buildings with many door and window openings and may not meet seismic or high wind zone codes. Such walls can be either load bearing or non-load bearing. Shear walls are a type of structural system that provides lateral resistance to a building or structure. They resist in-plane loads that are applied along its height. The applied load is generally transferred to the wall by a diaphragm or collector or drag member. They are built in wood, concrete, and CMU (masonry). Plywood is the conventional material used in the construction of shear walls, but with advances in technology and modern building methods, there are other prefabricated options which have made it possible to inject shear assemblies into narrow walls that fall at either side of an opening in a shear wall. Sheet steel and steel-backed shear panels in the place of structural plywood in shear walls has proved to be far stronger in seismic resistance. Nonplanar Shear Walls: Due to functional requirements, the designer may choose non planar sections like C,L as opposed to the planar sections like rectangular/bar bell sections. Nonplanar sections require 3D analysis and are a research area. Holdown (hold-down, hold down) or tie-down in structural engineering refers to the steel device or hardware that is installed at the end of a plywood shear wall. The holdowns provide uplift resistance against the overturning moment imposed on the wall due to "in-plane" lateral load applied at the top of the wall. A hold-down may also refer to clamping device used to anchor a pipe to a structural steel element or concrete floor or allow movement of the pipe in an axial direction. At the bottom, the holdown is connected to the concrete foundation or structural slab by an embedded or epoxied anchor bolt. At the top, the holdown is connected to a wood post with screws, nails or bolts.

How to Tell if Your Wall is Load Bearing, How To Cut a Doorway in a Load Bearing Wall

08:39
Be sure to view our other video on How To Eliminate Wobble in a kitchen wall: https://youtu.be/KWIHdWjPKC0 Tools we recommend: Dewalt Framing Nailer Kit: https://amzn.to/2BIespt It's a 20-Volt MAX XR Lithium-Ion battery cordless brushless 2-speed 33-degree framing nailer. This comes with charger and case too. I got this as a great alternative to having a compressor and twisted hoses everywhere to power a framing nailer to nail the bottom plate and wall studs back together, and add cabinet blocking to our stud walls. Here we show you DIY friends how to tell if a wall is load bearing, and we explain the physics and engineering behind load bearing walls, and break down each of the components of a stud wall for you in this bearing wall design example, like jack studs and kind studs, both important parts of your load bearing wall framing. Keep in mind this house was built in 1946 on the cheap for veterans, and so the header over this door frame resting on the jack studs was not correct. Today's building codes for bearing wall framing would have the header as a two 2x6 boards, with a half inch plywood sandwiched in between and they would be mounted with the 6" side upward vertically, not laying down flat on the jack studs as the door frame on this load bearing wall shows. If you are about to take down your wall in the kitchen to open up the kitchen to the living room, you need to know if that is a • bearing wall structure because you can't just demolish that wall, there are certain bracing precautions you must use prior to load bearing wall removal. So at this point, you really have to study and learn how to know if a wall is load bearing. A load bearing wall is a wall that directly bears the point load weight of the roof trusses or a second floor above it. If it is a true load bearing wall, then usually the floor joists of the attic above your wall will sit with one end of the joist on the top of your stud wall, and so people remodeling a house need to determine if the wall is load bearing or not. If you see a floor joist end on top of your stud wall, then it is a load bearing wall, and you know you can't just remove load bearing wall until you put the new framing in. The strict definition of the load bearing wall is if the ends of a roof truss or floor joists sit on top of your stud wall, then you know there is a point load going down to ground. But what if the joists are just traveling across the top of your stud wall, and the joists are supported on both ends of the house, is your wall still load bearing? In this potential bearing wall design example, opinions vary. It's a tough question, not everyone is a structural engineering expert. I witnessed 2 contractors debating over whether this was a load bearing wall. Some people say yes these are load bearing walls, and some say no. But you cant go wrong in treating it as a load bearing wall, and just make sure you don't take the whole wall down at once. to be safe for load bearing wall removal, you can always build a temporary stud wall to brace the ceiling joists until you replace the bearing wall with a beam and its supports. But if it is a load bearing wall, you need to build bracing to support the floor joists or other loads above prior to removing any studs from this wall. Also the header over the door should be made of two 2x6 pieces of wood nailed together and mounted so the 6" tall part should be the header over the door top. You may need a 1/2" thick filler piece nailed between them. This is what I think is the funny part, you have to build a bearing wall framing structure in order to take down a load bearing framing structure. Load bearing wall removal If the wall is load bearing, then you cannot just start pulling studs out of it to open up your kitchen for that open concept look because then the load, which is your roof or second floor, could come crashing down. You need to build a temporary stud wall and mount it pretty close to your load bearing wall to support the ceiling structure above it before you can remove that load bearing wall. At the risk of sounding repetitive, do not remove any load bearing walls unless you have some type of shoring or temporary bearing wall framing installed. You have to install a load bearing wall to remove a load bearing wall. Sounds counter-intuitive, but think of this temporary bearing wall as a stunt double for the original. Based on the information in this video, you'll be able to quickly determine whether your wall is load bearing or not, and see the necessary anatomy of what a properly framed door cut out should look like to create a cutout for a door in a load bearing wall. Once you decide to cut out a door frame into the wall, this video also shows you the anatomy of the stud wall framing, and discusses the wall framing, the header board, the jack stud, and the king stud, all components in involved in framing a door into the middle of stud wall framing.

Wall Framing Trick

04:31
http://www.AsktheBuilder.com founder, Tim Carter, shows a nifty trick when framing walls for a house. Don't allow an interior wall to touch an exterior wall. Leave a 3/4-inch gap so you can slide drywall in one giant piece instead of having to cut it at the corners. This wall framing trick also helps prevent air infiltration because the vapor barrier and drywall are solid along the entire exterior wall surfaces of the entire house. You save lumber too because there's no need for lathe catcher studs at the intersection of the two walls.

What is KNEE WALL? What does KNEE WALL mean? KNEE WALL meaning, definition & explanation

01:23
What is KNEE WALL? What does KNEE WALL mean? KNEE WALL meaning - KNEE WALL definition - KNEE WALL explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A knee wall is a short wall, typically under three feet (one metre) in height, used to support the rafters in timber roof construction. In his book A Visual Dictionary of Architecture, Francis D. K. Ching defines a knee wall as "a short wall supporting rafters at some intermediate position along their length." The knee wall takes the place of a purlin, providing support to rafters which therefore need not be large enough to span from the ridge to the eaves. Typically the knee wall is finished with plaster, enclosing the useful part of the attic space (not necessarily high enough for a person to stand up), while the remaining small space under the eaves is only useful for storage. The term is derived from the association with the vertical location of the human knee. Knee walls are common in old houses in which the ceiling on the top floor is an attic, i.e. the ceiling is the underside of the roof and slopes down on one or more sides.

Before doing any work, determine if the wall is load bearing or non-load bearing. If in doubt, consult a structural engineer. 2. If the wall is load bearing, a temporary wall will need to built using 2x8 plates on the floor and ceiling and 2x4 studs at an angle to support any weight from the floors above. 3. Hammer the studs into the temporary wall until they’re snug. 4. Use a drill/driver to secure a brace across the studs. 5. Use a level to draw the outline for the opening. Cut the opening using a reciprocating saw. 6. Remove the wall board and studs in the area of the new opening. 7. If needed, fill any extra space with studs. 8. Install the first jack studs on either side of the opening, with a small stud attached to hold the bottom plate of the new opening. 9. Install two sill plates into the bottom of the opening. Secure them with screws. 10. Create a header for the new opening using two 2x12 boards with a piece of ½” plywood sandwiched in between with construction adhesive and screws. 11. Install the header in the opening. Install the additional jack studs inside the opening for the header to rest on. 12. Attach the jack studs and header using screws. 13. With the header in place, the temporary wall can be removed. 14. Use the reciprocating saw to cut the drywall on the other side of the opening. 15. Touch up the drywall or plaster around the opening. Framing Plate and Anchor Bolt Layout Tips For Home Construction

02:50
http://www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/foundations/index.html If you're planning on building a home, garage or even a remodeling, it wouldn't be a bad idea to understand how anchor bolts affect framing plate breaks. Most building codes require an anchor bolt on each side of the framing plate break, within 12 inches from the break. Check with your local building department for more information and if you're working with a new set of building plans, make sure that you read all of the job specifications from the engineer. If you forget to install and anchor bolt in your concrete footings or foundation, you might have a difficult time installing one after the concrete has dried.

Wall Bracing II: Meeting the Code Through Prescriptive Wall Bracing

01:15:33
This is the second in a series of five wall bracing webinars presented by APA – The Engineered Wood Association and AIBD (American Institute of Building Design) in 2014. Wall bracing is a method of providing lateral load resistance to residential structures. With sixteen different types of braced walls included in the IRC, as well as various tables, exceptions, alternates, and connection requirements, meeting the IRC bracing requirements appears to be a very complex task for homebuilders and designers. This webinar will break down the general wall bracing requirements and show how to use the tables within the IRC to determine if braced wall lines meet those requirements. This program was originally presented on July 22, 2014, by APA Engineered Wood Specialist Bob Clark. Visit http://www.apawood.org/walls for additional wall bracing information and resources. The Wall Bracing Webinar Series is brought to you by AIBD, a non-profit association dedicated to the enhancement, development, and recognition of the residential and building design professions. Why The Internet Isn't Happy With Game Of Thrones Episode 4

04:40
With so many storylines to wrap up and character arcs to complete, the final season of Game of Thrones was bound to make bold moves that not everyone agreed with. Such was the case on the latest episode of the fantasy drama, "The Last of the Starks," which has fans sulking, stamping their feet, and setting the internet ablaze with criticism. Major spoilers ahead! The fourth episode of season 8 started out strong, picking up after the jaw-dropping victory over the Night King and his White Walker army at the Battle of Winterfell to show the survivors laughing, carousing, and commending one another for their bravery and strength. Daenerys made Gendry Lord of Storm's End, Tormund guzzled down wine like it was going out of style, and the Lannister brothers goofed off playing a drinking game with Brienne of Tarth that eventually led to a steamy romance scene. Sadly, the merriment fizzled out as quickly as it came and "The Last of the Starks" ended up disappointing tons of die-hard Game of Thrones fans. For starters, many kicked up a fuss over the increasingly strained dynamic between Daenerys and Jon Snow, who recently revealed to his lady love that he's really her nephew and the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Some felt that the tension between the two — Daenerys wants the Iron Throne more than anything and firmly requests Jon not tell anyone about his true parentage, while Jon doesn't have any interest in ruling the Seven Kingdoms and tells Dany that he'll always bend the knee to her — has become unbearable. One fan took to Twitter to write that it's "annoying" that Jon is letting his love for Daenerys influence his decisions, while others said that the Dany-Jon conflict is "frustrating" because it seems a marriage between the two would resolve problems and allow them both to get what they desire. Dany's "recklessness" and Jon's "naïveté" were also sore spots for some fans. Of course, that's just the tip of the dragon's wing of problems fans had. Viewers were heartbroken to see another one of Daenerys' dragons plummet to his death — this time Rhaegal, shot down by Euron Greyjoy as Dany and her allied forces stormed King's Landing. One fan wrote on Twitter that Rhaegal's death was a "lazy" surprise Rhaegal's gnarly demise wasn't the only shocking death in the episode. As punishment for Daenerys not giving up her crusade for the Iron Throne, and to send her a message about what she'll do if she doesn't surrender, Cersei Lannister had the Mountain behead Dany's loyal adviser Missandei, who had been taken prisoner when Euron and his Iron Fleet ambushed Dany's ships. Unsurprisingly, Missandei's murder sent shockwaves through social media, with many stating that she "deserved so much better" and others expressing distress over the fact that her lover Grey Worm is now living his worst nightmare. The indignation didn't stop there — more Thrones fans let it be known that they were disappointed over Jon sending his direwolf Ghost north of the Wall without even patting his head to say goodbye, Tyrion and Varys contemplating committing treason and considering withdrawing their support for Dany in favor of Jon after they learn who Jon truly is, and Jaime abandoning Brienne and heading for Cersei in King's Landing shortly after the two knights shared several intimate evenings together. All this anger and sadness over Season 8, Episode 4 of Game of Thrones has resulted in a grim consequence: the episode is currently the second-lowest-rated Thrones installment in history based on Rotten Tomatoes reviews. The episode stands at a 61 percent approval rating on the aggregator site, coming in only a few percentage points above the disturbing season 5 episode "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken," which earned a score of 54 percent. Keep watching video to learn why the internet isn't happy with Game of Thrones episode 4 #GoT #GameOfThrones #GameOfThronesReax

Knee Stability Hack | Trevor Bachmeyer | SmashweRx

09:16
👊KNEE STABILITY HACK👊 - Knee problems will cripple most training routines, athletic performances and daily activity (yep even sleep😉). Yeah, and attacking the knee itself is the last thing that you need. - The knee is a mid chain horsepower transfer joint, taking that stump ripping torque you generate at the hips and dumping it into the ground (or someone’s head if you’re @thenotoriousmma). In any case, knee stability is critical. - What begins to happen is that the knee becomes loaded with translational shear. The adductors anchored on the femur and pelvis, the hip capsule and the internal rotators all work together to roll the head of the femur anterior. Now three things happen with that: 1. The hip mechanics get completely corrupt. 2. The knee chronically loads in a valgus position. 3. The femur and tibia lose parallel orientation. Trust me, that’s all bad. 👎 - The power pushed through the joint now spills out the medial side. So whether it’s directional change, axial load or a lateral shift, the contraction of both the external and internal hip rotators is asymmetrical. Your CNS ‘hunts’ for ideal position which forces the knee to wobble. It’s like trying to run through a course on Wipeout 24/7. Here’s what needs to happen: 1. Internal hip rotation has to be unloaded. 2. Tibiofemoral orientation needs a parallel reset. 3. The stressed and stretched external rotators need strengthening. Heres how to do it: 1️⃣ Band Distracted Figure 4 2️⃣ ITB LAX Release Kickout 3️⃣ LAX Quad Kickout 4️⃣ X Man Walks 5️⃣ Banded Wall Sit BOOM! Go and do! Smash you later!

I escaped. I found my way out of the darkness I kept my faith (I know you did), kept my faith When the river was deep I didn't falter When the mountain was high I still believed When the valley was low it didn't stop me, no no I knew you were waiting. I knew you were waiting for me With an endless desire I kept on searching Sure in time our eyes would meet Like the bridge is on fire The hurt is over, One touch and you set me free No, I don't regret a single moment, No, I don't (I know you don't) looking back When I think of all those disappointments I just laugh (I know you do), I just laugh When the river was deep I didn't falter When the mountain was high I still believed When the valley was low it didn't stop me I knew you were waiting. I knew you were waiting for me So we were drawn together through destiny (oh, boy) I know this love we shared was meant to be I knew you were waiting, Knew you were waiting I knew you were waiting, Knew you were waiting for me I didn't falter I still believed When the valley was low it didn't stop me I knew you were waiting. I knew you were waiting for me I didn't falter When the mountain was high I still believed When the valley was low it didn't stop me I knew you were waiting.
