Creating a half or pony wall in Xactimate is not intuitive or easy to remember. It has taken me a long time to remember how to achieve the half wall and I still sometimes forget one of the steps and have to figure it out again through trial and error. I recommend taking good notes on this tip so that you don't get frustrated in the future when you have to Sketch a custom-style home that has these types of details. Dr. Brian Eitelman, DVM, CJF, of Aggie Vet and Farrier Services discusses laminitis and founder in horses. In part 1, we go over the definition of laminitis and founder, anatomy of the horse that is involved in laminitis and founder, insensitive and sensitive laminae, coffin bone, hoof wall. Dr. Brian Eitelman and Aggie Vet and Farrier Services provide veterinarian and farrier services in Parker, CO, Elizabeth, CO, Castle Rock, CO and Sedalia, CO. To learn more, please visit us at www.vetandfarrier.com Start with definitions: Laminitis = Inflammation of laminae Founder = Maritime term – boat founders it sinks, when laminae loses ability to hold coffin bone the bone rotates/sinks in foot = founder Anatomy - Bones: Coffin Bone (CB), Short Pastern (SP), Long Pastern Bone (LP), and Navicular bone (N) - CB primary determinant of hoof wall shape and sits mostly in forward half of foot - 2 types of laminae - Sensitive (red) – internal, blood, innervation - IN-sensitive (black) – external, hoof wall, no blood or sensation ---Comparative Anatomy --- cuticle and fingernail - Simplifying sensitive laminae – holds coffin bone (bony column of horse) to hoof wall - acts as Velcro and interlocks/interdigitates with insensitive - Insensitive laminae – bears ~90% of horse’s weight Blood supply - Circumflex artery – hose that feeds the bottom and forward half of foot - Foundered/rotated coffin bone pinches off hose and majority issues in founder in lower/forward part of foot Laminitis - Primarily inflammation of sensitive laminae (discuss causes and treatments in part 2) - Large amounts of tissue and connections b/c fingers that are inflamed, dying, dead - Catch fingernail and pull away or smash finger with hammer – you have inflamed sensitive laminae - Painful but reversible condition Enough inflammation for enough time causes lamina to die and when enough die – can’t hold bone and rotates Founder - Horse has crossed over from laminitis (potentially reversible) to founder (permanent) - Pinches hose (circumflex artery) in bottom of foot - Large parts of forward half of the foot can start dying and coffin bone can rotate more, etc. - Long term prognosis depends on: How much blood supply has been lost? How much tissue still intact? Has the underlying cause corrected? Why did my horse founder? Why does my horse have laminitis? How did my horse get laminitis? How did my horse founder? What causes founder in horses? What causes laminitis in horses? How do you treat laminitis in horses? How do you treat founder in horses? How to treat laminitis in horses? How to treat founder in horses? What are the signs of founder in horses? What are the symptoms of founder in horses? How do you diagnose laminitis in horses? How do you diagnose founder in horses?

http://www.learningconstruction.com Step by step tutorial: In structural engineering, a shear wall is a wall composed of braced panels (also known as shear panels) to counter the effects of lateral load acting on a structure. Wind and seismic loads are the most common loads braced wall lines are designed to counteract. Under several building codes, including the International Building Code (where it is called a braced wall line) and Uniform Building Code, all exterior wall lines in wood or steel frame construction must be braced. Depending on the size of the building some interior walls must be braced as well. A more traditional method is to use let-in diagonal wood bracing throughout the wall line, and a newer alternative is let-in metal T-bracing but these methods may not be viable for buildings with many door and window openings and may not meet seismic or high wind zone codes. Such walls can be either load bearing or non-load bearing. Shear walls are a type of structural system that provides lateral resistance to a building or structure. They resist in-plane loads that are applied along its height. The applied load is generally transferred to the wall by a diaphragm or collector or drag member. They are built in wood, concrete, and CMU (masonry). Plywood is the conventional material used in the construction of shear walls, but with advances in technology and modern building methods, there are other prefabricated options which have made it possible to inject shear assemblies into narrow walls that fall at either side of an opening in a shear wall. Sheet steel and steel-backed shear panels in the place of structural plywood in shear walls has proved to be far stronger in seismic resistance. Nonplanar Shear Walls: Due to functional requirements, the designer may choose non planar sections like C,L as opposed to the planar sections like rectangular/bar bell sections. Nonplanar sections require 3D analysis and are a research area. Holdown (hold-down, hold down) or tie-down in structural engineering refers to the steel device or hardware that is installed at the end of a plywood shear wall. The holdowns provide uplift resistance against the overturning moment imposed on the wall due to "in-plane" lateral load applied at the top of the wall. A hold-down may also refer to clamping device used to anchor a pipe to a structural steel element or concrete floor or allow movement of the pipe in an axial direction. At the bottom, the holdown is connected to the concrete foundation or structural slab by an embedded or epoxied anchor bolt. At the top, the holdown is connected to a wood post with screws, nails or bolts.

http://www.AsktheBuilder.com founder, Tim Carter, shows a nifty trick when framing walls for a house. Don't allow an interior wall to touch an exterior wall. Leave a 3/4-inch gap so you can slide drywall in one giant piece instead of having to cut it at the corners. This wall framing trick also helps prevent air infiltration because the vapor barrier and drywall are solid along the entire exterior wall surfaces of the entire house. You save lumber too because there's no need for lathe catcher studs at the intersection of the two walls.

What is KNEE WALL? What does KNEE WALL mean? KNEE WALL meaning - KNEE WALL definition - KNEE WALL explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A knee wall is a short wall, typically under three feet (one metre) in height, used to support the rafters in timber roof construction. In his book A Visual Dictionary of Architecture, Francis D. K. Ching defines a knee wall as "a short wall supporting rafters at some intermediate position along their length." The knee wall takes the place of a purlin, providing support to rafters which therefore need not be large enough to span from the ridge to the eaves. Typically the knee wall is finished with plaster, enclosing the useful part of the attic space (not necessarily high enough for a person to stand up), while the remaining small space under the eaves is only useful for storage. The term is derived from the association with the vertical location of the human knee. Knee walls are common in old houses in which the ceiling on the top floor is an attic, i.e. the ceiling is the underside of the roof and slopes down on one or more sides.

This is the second in a series of five wall bracing webinars presented by APA – The Engineered Wood Association and AIBD (American Institute of Building Design) in 2014. Wall bracing is a method of providing lateral load resistance to residential structures. With sixteen different types of braced walls included in the IRC, as well as various tables, exceptions, alternates, and connection requirements, meeting the IRC bracing requirements appears to be a very complex task for homebuilders and designers. This webinar will break down the general wall bracing requirements and show how to use the tables within the IRC to determine if braced wall lines meet those requirements. This program was originally presented on July 22, 2014, by APA Engineered Wood Specialist Bob Clark. Visit http://www.apawood.org/walls for additional wall bracing information and resources. The Wall Bracing Webinar Series is brought to you by AIBD, a non-profit association dedicated to the enhancement, development, and recognition of the residential and building design professions. For more information on other AIBD programs and activities, visit www.aibd.org.

Before doing any work, determine if the wall is load bearing or non-load bearing. If in doubt, consult a structural engineer. 2. If the wall is load bearing, a temporary wall will need to built using 2x8 plates on the floor and ceiling and 2x4 studs at an angle to support any weight from the floors above. 3. Hammer the studs into the temporary wall until they’re snug. 4. Use a drill/driver to secure a brace across the studs. 5. Use a level to draw the outline for the opening. Cut the opening using a reciprocating saw. 6. Remove the wall board and studs in the area of the new opening. 7. If needed, fill any extra space with studs. 8. Install the first jack studs on either side of the opening, with a small stud attached to hold the bottom plate of the new opening. 9. Install two sill plates into the bottom of the opening. Secure them with screws. 10. Create a header for the new opening using two 2x12 boards with a piece of ½” plywood sandwiched in between with construction adhesive and screws. 11. Install the header in the opening. Install the additional jack studs inside the opening for the header to rest on. 12. Attach the jack studs and header using screws. 13. With the header in place, the temporary wall can be removed. 14. Use the reciprocating saw to cut the drywall on the other side of the opening. 15. Touch up the drywall or plaster around the opening. While lateral bracing is just one of many important factors to consider when designing, performing plan review, building and inspecting a residential structure, it is also one of most common sources of confusion and misapplication. This book was jointly developed by ICC and APA—the Engineered Wood Association to help designers, builders, building officials and others effectively understand and apply the wood-frame lateral bracing requirements of the 2009 International Residential Code® (IRC). This new guide covers lateral forces on a house, the history of bracing provisions, code limitations, permissible bracing options, connection details for bracing systems, pony and cripple wall requirements, and whole house considerations using illustrated design examples. It also includes more than 200 full-color tables, figures, and photographs. 255 Pages

http://www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/foundations/index.html If you're planning on building a home, garage or even a remodeling, it wouldn't be a bad idea to understand how anchor bolts affect framing plate breaks. Most building codes require an anchor bolt on each side of the framing plate break, within 12 inches from the break. Check with your local building department for more information and if you're working with a new set of building plans, make sure that you read all of the job specifications from the engineer. If you forget to install and anchor bolt in your concrete footings or foundation, you might have a difficult time installing one after the concrete has dried.

Dr. Brian Eitelman, DVM, CJF, of Aggie Vet and Farrier Services discusses laminitis and founder in horses. In part 2, we go over diagnosis of laminitis and founder, presentation (signs/symptoms) of laminitis and founder, treatment of laminitis, treatment of founder, causes of laminitis and founder, prevention of laminitis, prevention of founder. These can include: lame horses, foundered stance, ice boots, cold therapy, equine metabolic disease, EMS, cushing's disease, grain overload, therapeutic shoeing, support limb laminitis. Dr. Brian Eitelman and Aggie Vet and Farrier Services provide veterinarian and farrier services in Parker, CO, Elizabeth, CO, Castle Rock, CO and Sedalia, CO. To learn more, please visit us at www.vetandfarrier.com Diagnosis Laminitis is diagnosed by using hoof testers to locate pain along the hoof wall. It can also be detected by watching the horse move and stand in certain unnatural positions. Acute founder is, in general, a diagnosis made using xrays to see the downward rotation of the coffin bone. Horses with chronic founder will have visible changes to the hoof wall cause by the abnormal growth of that wall because of the separation of the lamina. This usually look like a hoof wall that if flare out like an elf shoe. Treatment As previously mentioned, laminitis “itis” refers to inflammation. So addressing laminitis in horses primarily involves reducing inflammation. Ice is great for reducing inflammation. Use ice boots or buckets to achieve prolonged icing. The key is TIME – icing for only a few minutes will not help. Use these treatments for as many HOURS as possible per day. This is one of the best things you can do! Another treatment for laminitis is NSAIDs, like bute or banamine. Deep bedding - sand or shavings - is VERY important in a horse with laminitis – at least above the fetlock joint. This disperses the pressure across the entire foot and allows the horse does lay down more comfortably for longer. Lastly but no less important, is getting the veterinarian involved to address and begin correction of underlying metabolic conditions that may be at the heart of the problem. Correcting these conditions take time so please don’t wait. Being a farrier, of course I have to mention hoof balance, but this is very important as well! Make sure that you have a competent, qualified farrier understands how to correctly balance your horse's feet. This if critical and not the time for the bargain farrier. In the long-term, your horse will need more frequent hoof trimming, or said another way, shorter cycles. Prevention One big cause of laminitis and founder is a metabolic condition, such as EMS or PPID. Another is acute grain overload. These conditions all boil down to too many carbohydrates, or sugars, circulating in the body, and the horse’s body can’t process them all. As a result, this causes disruption in the bloodflow to the foot. When that bloodflow is disrupted, the lamina becomes inflamed (laminitis) or dies and starts to separate (founder). Weight plays a huge role in this. Many overweight horses have metabolic conditions that can lead to laminitis or founder, so it is critical to keep your horse at a healthy weight. Also, if your horse does have laminitis, its excess weight will put more pressure on the feet – making it worse! If your horse has one bad or injured leg, then it will naturally shift more weight to all the other legs. This can increase this risk of laminitis in its other legs. Take Barabaro as an example. His fractured leg was successfully fixed, however the time he spent putting more weight on the other back leg caused that leg to founder, which is eventually why he was put down. So, what are the take away points? - If your horse gets into too much grain, it can become a VERY big problem VERY quickly. You should always call your vet right away if this happens – you now know that colic isn’t the only risk from this. - Don’t ignore possible metabolic disease in a horse. Address this before you have a major problem. Additionally, this is a critical step in managing laminitis/founder in both the short term and long term. - Don’t let your horse get overweight. - If your horse has one injured leg, put your horse in proper shoes or bedding that will help it to support all its legs evenly. If by chance, you're not able to always get to the gym to work out, a couple of things that can be beneficial to you that we all do, even the guys that fight. You can go for a jog. Jog as far as you feel that your body can take you. Don't try to do more than that, because you'll just come back and just be crippled for the next two weeks. Deal with the distance you can handle first. It could be a mile, two miles. When you come back to the gym or you come back to your apartment, if you have a rope, jump rope for 10 minutes. Jump rope is a great way to keep yourself in shape. When you're jumping rope, try not to school girl jump rope. If you can, start off with your feet together as you turn the rope. Then you want to pick one leg up, one leg down. Again, important part, keeping the balls of your feet off the ground as you jump. You can jump for 10, 15, maybe 20 minutes. No more than 20 minutes. After that, you can run through some abs for 10, 15 minutes, or some push-ups. Within itself, that is an aggressive, good workout if you're not able to get to the gym every day.

👊KNEE STABILITY HACK👊 - Knee problems will cripple most training routines, athletic performances and daily activity (yep even sleep😉). Yeah, and attacking the knee itself is the last thing that you need. - The knee is a mid chain horsepower transfer joint, taking that stump ripping torque you generate at the hips and dumping it into the ground (or someone’s head if you’re @thenotoriousmma). In any case, knee stability is critical. - What begins to happen is that the knee becomes loaded with translational shear. The adductors anchored on the femur and pelvis, the hip capsule and the internal rotators all work together to roll the head of the femur anterior. Now three things happen with that: 1. The hip mechanics get completely corrupt. 2. The knee chronically loads in a valgus position. 3. The femur and tibia lose parallel orientation. Trust me, that’s all bad. 👎 - The power pushed through the joint now spills out the medial side. So whether it’s directional change, axial load or a lateral shift, the contraction of both the external and internal hip rotators is asymmetrical. Your CNS ‘hunts’ for ideal position which forces the knee to wobble. It’s like trying to run through a course on Wipeout 24/7. Here’s what needs to happen: 1. Internal hip rotation has to be unloaded. 2. Tibiofemoral orientation needs a parallel reset. 3. The stressed and stretched external rotators need strengthening. Heres how to do it: 1️⃣ Band Distracted Figure 4 2️⃣ ITB LAX Release Kickout 3️⃣ LAX Quad Kickout 4️⃣ X Man Walks 5️⃣ Banded Wall Sit BOOM! Go and do! Smash you later!
