Data Mining: How You're Revealing More Than You Think

11:13
Data mining recently made big news with the Cambridge Analytica scandal, but it is not just for ads and politics. It can help doctors spot fatal infections and it can even predict massacres in the Congo. The real value of your personal data - Docu - 2013

49:18
The personal data that is being collected by internet companies has turned into a goldmine. The applications for this enormous mountain of data is endless, from health care uses to marketeers who can accurately predict your behavior. But who is making money from your data? And who owns your personal data? Original title: The value of your personal data. Personal data is being collected constantly. Smartphones send your location data, internet browsers store which websites you visited and credit card companies carefully register your buying patterns. One would say that all this personal data is being used to send you advertisements and banners. But that’s just the start. Your data is not only used to understand who you are right now, but also what your life will look like in the future, because that is where the big money is. Could we regain the control over our own personal data, so that we can share in the profits? Due to huge flow of information, one can tell who we are today and what we will do tomorrow. Can we get control of our own data? Information is collected and stored on your behalf. Via mobile phone and computer, every step you take is saved and analyzed. By companies like Google, Facebook, Apple and Twitter, among others. This precious personal data is not just saved. There are now new valuable uses for your data, giving your personal data the worth of gold. Data centers full of your personal data are the heart of what is called Big Data. A treasure of valuable new insights, derived from your location data, emails, photos, text messages, and more from your digital production. Because your personal data is not only used to send customized ads. Your data is used to predict your future behavior. Through smart analyzes of all your behavior that you leave behind on your mobile phone and computer, it’s easy to find out who you are. And that's not that hard, it turns out. For example, the University of Cambridge just by looking at which buttons you click on Facebook, can see if your parents are divorced, whether you are gay, and so on. Predicting human behavior, possible thanks to all your personal data, can help to design cities better, combat diseases and prevent wars. But if all of your personal data is so valuable, then shouldn’t it be time for you to get control of it? And also take part of that profit for yourself? Waste is food - VPRO documentary - 2007

49:09
The waste we discard does not disappear. That is impossible, because the Earth is a closed system. Our waste only seems invisible because we dilute it with water, cover it with earth or have the wind blow it away. But in the end, we cannot avoid encountering it again. In our drinking water, in the air we breathe, in our food and in our body. In this episode of Backlight, the designer William McDonough and the chemist Michael Braungart discuss the solution to this problem: the principle of Waste = Food. An inspiring documentary on the Cradle to Cradle design concept of the chemist Michael Braungart and the architect William McDonough. Man is the only creature that produces landfills. Natural resources are being depleted on a rapid scale while production and consumption are rising in nations like China and India. The waste production worldwide is enormous and if we do not do anything we will soon have turned all our resources into one big messy landfill. But there is hope. The German chemist Michael Braungart, and the American designer-architect William McDonough are fundamentally changing the way we produce and build. If waste would become food for the biosphere or the technosphere (all the technical products we make), production and consumption could become beneficial for the planet. A design and production concept that they call Cradle to Cradle. A concept that is seen as the next industrial revolution: design every product in such a way that at the end of its lifecycle the component materials become a new resource. But also design buildings in such a way that they produce energy and become a friend to the environment. Large companies like Ford and Nike are working with McDonough and Braungart to change their production facilities and their products. They realize that economically wise, waste is a destruction of capital. You make something with no value. Based on their ideas the Chinese government is working towards a circular economy where Waste = Food. An amazing story that will definitely change your way of thinking about production and consumption. This documentary won the Silver Dragon at the Beijing International Science Film Festival 2006. Let it snow - winter on three continents | DW Documentary

42:30
From Montreal in Canada to the forests of Karelia in Russia to the Japanese island of Hokkaido, winter in these snowy wonderlands can sometimes be tough. The average annual snowfall in Montreal is two meters. Maxime Fournier is in charge of keeping the roads in the city center clear -- even after the worst snowstorms. Maxime says it's an impossible job. He co-ordinates the big ploughs that go out as soon as snow is forecast. And he oversees the trucks that carry away the white stuff from the downtown area. That's 12-million cubic meters a year -- equivalent to the cargo capacity of 200,000 freight wagons. But even if all the snow was left on the ground, people could still manage. Montreal is crisscrossed by a network of tunnels -- and a 35 km-long labyrinth of passages connects hotels, offices, shopping malls, and even an ice hockey rink. There'd be plenty of room to play hockey on the 66,000 frozen lakes of Karelia. But the local residents prefer ice-fishing. Local resident Andrei Kokkonen says it's an ideal pastime. Andrei adds that ice-fishing is also good for your health, because you use all of your muscles. The traditional Ban’ei horse race takes place on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido -- often at temperatures as low as -16º C. It features powerful draft animals that pull heavy sleds over a hilly track. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. Can robots understand human emotion? | DW Documentary

42:26
Scientists are building robots to read human feelings. Does that make them people? And can artificial intelligence ever really understand emotion? Scientists around the world are working on technology that can measure facial expressions, speech and gestures. They are creating avatars that are able to react sensitively to real people and interpret their feelings. This documentary takes viewers to Los Angeles, Boston and Berlin to show what scientists envision for the future and what is already technically possible. Virtual therapists already assist psychologists in diagnosing depression and trauma. "Empathetic" robots serve as teachers’ aides. Data goggles transmit the wearer’s feelings in real time. This constant self-monitoring is designed to enhance personal happiness. But what are these new and fascinating possibilities really doing with their users? How do people decipher emotions and how do machines do it? Guided feelings or intuition - which is more trustworthy? In this documentary, science journalist Ulrich Schnabel takes a closer look at the digital world’s emotional landscape. He shows how algorithms can influence a person’s mood and love life, and what makes feelings such a hot commodity. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. PRACTICE: Outside In | Inside Out

03:33:37
This symposium considers discourse on contemporary issues of design practice in two parts: the external pressures of economic, environmental, and political systems, and internal forces of tools, techniques, and strategies for design. Addressing the multifaceted nature of the profession, we will explore themes for the design of practice, such as work and labor, tools and technology, and ethics and agency. The symposium highlights potential avenues for the growth and constitution of practice, as well as the issues currently at stake within the profession. The following discussions confront pressing questions regarding the shifting responsibilities of design practice, and the future of practice itself. This symposium is generously sponsored by the Carl M. Sapers Ethics in Practice Fund, and co-hosted by the GSD Practice Platform and the Department of Architecture. The Science of Sports

03:01
By all accounts, Jake Wittig ’19 enjoyed a strong freshman season for the Rochester men’s basketball team last year. The point guard started 23 games and averaged 8.8 points and 3.3 assists. When the season ended, Wittig dug a little deeper to evaluate his performance. Using Synergy Sports Technology, an online service whose clients include hundreds of NCAA teams from Divisions I, II, and III, Wittig learned that he ranked “below average” in catch and shoot 3-pointers (19th percentile), jump shots off the dribble (31st percentile), and pick and roll including passes (48th percentile). “The data showed me what I was good at and what I needed to work on,” says Wittig, a business major from Manlius, New York, and son of Jeff Wittig ’86, a two-time All-American quarterback at Rochester. “Last summer, I worked on those things and have been able to make better reads and limit my turnovers.” Through the first week of February, Synergy ranked Wittig “very good” in catch and shoot (76th percentile) and jump shots off the dribble (79th percentile), and “excellent” for pick and roll including passes (88th percentile). “The data made me a better player,” Wittig says. Data analytics is the new normal for college teams. Programs pay for different web-based programs out of their annual budgets to evaluate student-athletes, plan for opponents, and even prevent injuries. Field hockey coach Wendy Andreatta uses VidSwap to measure success with set pieces and to help improve shooting and save percentages. The data also shows where and how the Yellowjackets are scored upon. Andreatta says having data keeps her players more open to tactical changes. “What it does for our players is make them listen to their coaches a little bit more,” she says. “When we say this is a great scoring position, and we can have the data to back it up, they’ll put themselves in that scoring position more readily than they would if they hadn’t seen it.” Men’s basketball coach Luke Flockerzi and women’s basketball coach Jim Scheible both use Synergy. That’s not just a choice; it’s a requirement of the University Athletic Association, which seeks to keep all teams on a level playing court. The company Synergy—founded by Garrick Barr, the former coach of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns—has transformed the way coaches and general managers evaluate talent. Each year, the Seattle-based company analyzes and breaks down more than 50,000 games worldwide above the high school level. Statistics are linked to videos, too. So if your point guard missed 18 shots last Sunday, player and coach can watch him or her missing those 18 shots. “It used to take me two hours to watch an opponent’s game,” Flockerzi says. “Now I can watch it in 15 minutes, by eliminating timeouts, free throws, things like that. I can watch the parts I want to watch.” “I’m definitely a fan of Synergy,” says Sam Borst-Smith ’17, a starting guard on the men’s basketball team and an English major from San Pedro, California. “The information shows what our collective team strengths are, as well as individual.” At the same time, there are players and coaches who maintain that data analytics, for all its obvious uses and benefits, shouldn’t be seen as a substitute for instinct. Borst-Smith is among them. “You can’t get too wrapped up in the statistics that Synergy provides,” he says. “Keeping your strengths and weaknesses in the back of your mind can result in negative effects, such as putting pressure on yourself to perform at a high level that will keep your statistics high. Once you’re able to not think about your statistics and just go out and perform, you’ll play better.” There are a few University coaches who don’t subscribe to a web-based data analytics system. For most sports, however, data science is here to stay. And it will continue to improve. “What we have now is so much better than just a few years ago,” Flockerzi says. “I can’t imagine what’s in store in the years ahead.” Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/49Jn/

What is a projection in statistics?

01:13
A projection indicates what the future changes in a population would be if the assumptions about future trends actually occur. These assumptions are often based on patterns of change which have previously occurred. For example: Data collected about the total number of store locations for a retail chain over three years show an increase from 8 stores in first year, to 12 stores in the second year, to 18 stores in the third year. It could therefore be projected that if the chain continues to expand following the same pattern of increasing by half (50%) each year there will be 27 stores after the fourth year. A projection is not making a prediction or forecast about what is going to happen, it is indicating what would happen if the assumptions which underpin the projection actually occur. Dr Ralf Huss - 4th International Definiens Symposium

55:46
The Medical Value of Digital Pathology Dr. Ralf Huss CMO, Definiens AG, Munich Surgical pathology is still largely conducted manually while the complexity in clinical diagnostics grows almost exponentially. Clinicians increasingly challenge the pathologist to reasonably stratify each particular patient according to the patient's individual cancer biology. Although new molecular technologies provide additional data based on the tumor's genotype and other -omics tools, only the sustained integrity of the tumor and the surrounding tissue provides pivotal information on the tumor heterogeneity and the potential co-localization of highly proliferative areas and areas with chemo-sensitivity or resistance, which might have a significant influence on the treatment response and disease outcome. The quantitative, simultaneous and unbiased analysis of all extractable (biomarker) data from a single tumor by Digital Pathology is an essential requirement for effective clinical decision support that can be provided as the highest possible medical value of the diagnostic community for the benefit of the patients' health. Prof Dr Ralf Huss accepted the role as Chief Medical Officer of Definiens AG in 2013. He brings more than 20 years of medical expertise and significant knowledge in histopathology and cancer research into Definiens' Tissue Diagnostics and Clinical Digital Pathology. Prior to assuming the role as CMO at Definiens, Prof. Huss also served as Global Head of Histopathology and Tissue Biomarker at Roche Diagnostics, where he was involved in identifying new tissue biomarkers to stratify cancer patients as part of a global Personalized Healthcare strategy. He also served in various post-doctoral and faculty positions in Switzerland, USA and Germany and he was an advisor to various small and mid-size life science companies and foundations. He also founded biotech start-ups in the area of advanced therapeutics. Prof. Huss holds a Doctoral Degree in Medicine from the Friedrich-Alexander-University in Erlangen and is an associated Professor of Pathology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and an adjunct Professor of Regenerative Medicine at the Wake-Forest-Institute in Winston-Salem.

Email activity management: A machine learning approach

01:06:40
Our use of ordinary desktop applications (email, Web, calendars, etc) is often a manifestation of the activities with which we are engaged. Planning a conference trip involves visits to airline and hotel sites, travel expense forms, etc. Renovating a kitchen involves sketches, product specifications, email with the architect, spreadsheets for tracking expenses, etc. Every enterprise has (often implicit) processes for managing customer queries, requesting maintenance, hiring someone, and so forth. Unfortunately, ordinary desktop applications don't know anything about these activities. Within an enterprise, it may be possible to coerce people to use a specialized workflow system to execute some processes; for example, customer relationship management systems ensure that customer queries are handled properly. But most activities exist entirely in our heads, forcing us to rely on crude techniques such as manual search, file directories, and email folders/threads to remember which documents and data are associated with which activities. In this talk, I describe techniques for automatically discovering and tracking activities in email. A common theme is the use of machine learning to generalize over previous activities. First, I discuss highly structured activities such as e-commerce transactions. A consumer purchasing an item may receive email messages confirming the order, warning of a delay, and then a shipment notification. Existing email clients do not understand this structure, so users must manage their transactions by sifting through lists of messages. As a step toward providing high-level support for structured activities, I consider the problem of automatically learning an activity's structure. I formalize activities as finite-state automata (where states correspond to the status of the process, and transitions represent messages sent between participants), and propose several unsupervised machine learning algorithms in this context. Second, I discuss less structured activities such as organizing meetings or collaboratively editing documents. I describe machine learning approaches to activity discovery (ie, grouping messages according to activities) and semantic message analysis (ie, extracting metadata about how messages within an activity relate to one another and to the activity progress). Our key innovation compared to related work is that we exploit the relational structure of these two activities. Instead of attacking these two problems separately, in our synergistic collective classification approach, activity identification is used to assist semantic analysis, and vice versa.

Proving Reserves

02:19
http://GoldspringInfo.blogspot.com The beginning of a study about Goldspring Inc. Audio Interviews with Goldspring Inc CEO Faber & COO Golden. http://www.mymusicstream.com/artist/1947/index.php SEC Filings, Press Releases, Investor Brochures http://GoldspringFacts.blogspot.com Q1: Have you ever worked in a consulting position with a management team that went to this extent to determine a mining plan and to set it up to really know the parameters before they went in, to this extent, before mining? Mike Norrad, President, Founder Techbase 3-D Scientific Visualization and software prediction tool of Geological Mining Reserves A1: (In a calm, cool, senior voice) It is rare, because there is often a hurry, a rush to start moving dirt. Interjection mimicking financial pressue, "I want my money back!" A1: I can understand that on one hand, but I like thee...I basically have been told to get the right answer. To me that's very refreshing that Goldspring will give me the data I need. They will give me the time I need to get it right. I feel like here I am part of the team. If I see that we are not collecting the right information or if I see a place where we need more, I can say "Guys, we need a hole here," and a hole will appear there. We will add it to the list. To often (in other exploration efforts by other companies on other properties) I get called in after the fact, "The drill program is done. Okay, give us an answer." Truthfully, regretfully, respectfully, "It's too late to say, "You guys gave me the wrong stuff or you need to drill another hundred feet that way."" Q2: A comparative analysis between Goldspring and a mine up in Canada that just sold. What you (the Goldspring team) are doing here is real roadmap in comparision to what they did over there at "Talks on bucks for", almost a by-guess and by-golly. A2: There some very shakey prospects that sell as if they were mines. The business can get a bad name that way. Q3: When you look at the other side of the coin as to what they are getting at. It's not, it's not - proven reserves! They put all these stipulations and they don't have the foggiest in third party verifiable writing as to how they are going to access it and how they are going to retrieve it. They don't know their extradiction cost is. A3: To be continued on next video .... This video clip is in the middle of the second Question and Answer Phase after the BBQ Open House on The Mountain. Subsequent clips will march towards the beginning of the Mike Norrad, TechBase QNA session part 2, post Geology and 3-D Prediction Software Presentation. After the second replay, it helps visualizing your company in the future if listening to the music of guitarist Robin Trower, "Bridge of Sighs", as the low soulful riffs paint large slow winds blowing through the sage and brush fed by gold springs as a deep digging 30 ton bucket scores inches deeper into the ore, lumbers by mighty power up an incline to drag another line into the bed of a T-Rex (Tyranasaurus Rex), King of Trucks. Now that you know Mike Norrad's words, turn off the sound of the video and turn up the sound of the music. Your spirit will sync the two. Your mind will equate the knowledge with the video images adding the accumulated knowledge from your lifetime to imagine the detail close-ups of the mining equipment in operation. Ride back in the king cab of the haul truck. Hydraulic rods lift half the load. The other half is on the back frame via the hinge as it rocks. 70 tons roll huffing out a mushroom of dust from short, but strong, man-made wind. The crusher rumbles on. Gravel churns wet through an agglommerator, walking out with a cement overcoat conveyed to Uriah's Heap. Resting in the desert sun until the speader fans a layer over head, getting darker with each sweep. In several weeks tons are piled high. Cyanide drips into a vat pumping to the rocky field to rain upon the surface. Into the crevasses where only electrons go, the mind scope sees gold particles departing their million year lodging being pulled out by a chemical attraction to cyanide, leaching downward to a pond over heavy mat, pumping up to Merril Lynch's kitchen as Sheryl Crowes, "Everyday is a Winding Road..." Cold winds blow thru God's little Virginia City, down the Comstock, past old Gold Hill, down futher to an American Flat where smaller still are little flecks dancing closer and closer together in a jig. Hands scraping DE off screens laden heavy with Au. A night in the Furnace where flickerings do strange things with dim shadows behind the myriads of tools hanging on the walls. Each replay cuts deeper another layer deeper into your future. http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1120970/000114420408057210/v128715_ex99-1.htm http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1120970/000114420408057210/v128715_ex99-2.htm http://picasaweb.google.com/Scheqky.Goldsprings/GoldspringIncReserveUpdateChartsByTelesco#

Scalable and Fast Machine Learning

22:29
This presentation was given in Comp 600 class and was targeted to general Computer Science audience. Here is an abstract for this talk: In this age of big data, every company is looking into ways to apply machine learning algorithms on their huge datasets. However, the problem is that this takes a huge amount of time due to the volume of data as well as complexity of the algorithms. To address the first problem, most companies use MapReduce, a software framework that parallelizes computations across clusters. To address the second problem, most companies use a simpler, iterative and more parallelizable algorithm called "gradient descent" to implement these machine learning algorithms. However, these techniques are still not fast enough to meet the needs of industry. My work focuses on improving the performance of gradient descent on MapReduce, which by extension also improves the performance of those machine learning algorithms on MapReduce as well. For my next problem in this proposal, I will be using my previous work on Online Aggregation for implementing the gradient descent algorithm and also will focus on the key question of when to stop a given iteration of gradient descent. The model proposed in this problem improves the performance of gradient descent on MapReduce and hence will takes us one step closer to the grand goal of scalable data analytics.

For more analysis visit: http://club.ino.com/trading/?vidmar ---- Did someone ring the bell on GOOGLE? What happened? Did the world change overnight? How did this once darling of the tech world implode and slide into one of the most dramatic meltdowns in tech history? Is it all over for Google? Has Google experienced it's 15 minutes of fame? Have some of the largest mutual funds in the industry thrown in the towel on Google? Here's what we do know. Google is going to remain a force in online advertising and search. ---- This from AP By MICHAEL LIEDTKE, AP Business Writer Tue Feb 26, 4:45 PM ET SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. economy is wheezing so badly that even Internet power Google Inc. and its once-robust stock is looking haggard. The focus on Google's recent deterioration sharpened Tuesday as investors reacted to the latest evidence indicating fewer people in the United States are clicking on the Internet ads that generate most of the online search leader's profits. The unsettling trend, captured in a closely followed report from Internet research firm comScore Inc., shoved Google shares to an 11-month low. The drop extended a slump that has lowered the Mountain View-based company's market value by 33 percent, or about $70 billion, during the first seven weeks of the year. The tech-laden Nasdaq composite index has declined by 12 percent during the same stretch. ____________________ Google is also going to be a great trading instrument now, and into the future.
