MINING JOBS TV Episode 3: Unskillled & Entry Level Mining Jobs Brought to you by www.miningresumes.com - Kick-start your mining career today and email us at [email protected] or call Mining Resumes on 1300 737 863 Welcome to Episode 3 of Mining Jobs TV. Hi my name is Matt and I will be speaking to you today about unskilled and entry level jobs in the Australian mining industry. Mining Jobs TV is a FREE online TV channel presenting regular episodes where we will discuss mining jobs and tips that will help you to secure a job in the industry. You may have probably heard the stories about a friend of a friend who is earning over $100,000 a year on a mine somewhere in Western Australia or Queensland and wondered how you could get a mining job too. Entry level or unskilled jobs, like trade assistants or plant operators are hard to get now as every man and his dog are applying for them. The best way to get these jobs would be to move out to the little mining towns and live there and register with all the labour hire companies, there are hundreds of them. Trades people like fitters, welders, boilermakers and electricians still have a fairly good chance of picking up work on mining sites. If you don't have a trade, doing a rigging or scaffolding course would give you a good chance at getting a job, the courses are only about 4 weeks long, but they are fairly expensive. Other unskilled or basic jobs available include cleaners, laundry workers and kitchen hands which is not difficult if you have hospitality training and experience. Talking to people who are currently working on mining sites can be a big help, especially if you have no previous experience or qualifications. It would be even better if you could get in contact with expats from your own country who are working on mining sites. They can let you know who to call and what you need to do. If you are inexperienced and unqualified you need to be fit and ready for physical labour. The work will be very repetitive and routine based with long 12 hour days, so you really need to be mentally prepared, as well as physically. Some mines will have a very high turnover of workers. This is because many people go to work on the mines not knowing what to expect. Because there can be such a high turnover, you may not start earning big money straight away, although your wages won't be small either. Once you've proved yourself to be a reliable worker, your wages should increase. Most mining companies will run police checks, as well as drug and alcohol tests. Even though there are wet mess areas on-site where workers can unwind and drink alcohol, they do have to drink in moderation and be fit-for-work before their shift starts Shutdowns are exactly what the name suggests. Every now and then mining sites need to shut down for upgrades, maintenance or repairs and they usually hire people temporarily to work during shut downs. A lot of the work is unskilled and doesn't last very long, so it's great for backpackers who want to keep on travelling and don't want to make a full-time commitment. It's also a great way to get your foot in the door and gain valuable on-site experience. To do certain mining jobs you will need to get licences and training, or 'tickets' as they are more commonly known. There are lots of different types of tickets depending on what type of work you're going to do. Some tickets can be very expensive and mines in different states require different tickets, so you really need to do your research before you start spending money on courses. Don't think that just because you're female that the mining companies and recruiters won't consider you. The mining industry in Australia is becoming increasingly gender neutral. It's not just cooking and cleaning jobs either on offer for women either; more and more women are working on Australian mining sites, and in some cases, companies even prefer women for certain jobs. For example, a popular job for women on mining sites is driving a dump truck because research has shown that women are easier on the multi-million dollar equipment yet still get the job done. It's most important to ensure you have the resume professionally worded and designed to stand out from your competitors. We highly recommended Mining Resumes to prepare your resume as they are the industry leaders in resume preparation for clients seeking jobs in the mining and oil & gas industry. They can be contacted via phone on 1300 RESUME or have a look at their website miningresumes.com with package details and samples browse that demonstrate their quality and experience. Workplace Drug Testing in Australia

Alcohol and other drug (AOD) testing in Australian workplaces may have increased in recent years. Testing is promoted by companies that market drug testing equipment, and productivity and occupational health and safety concerns are often the justification for workplace testing. There's no religion that could save me No matter how long my knees are on the floor (Ooh) So keep in mind all the sacrifices I'm makin' To keep you by my side To keep you from walkin' out the door. 'Cause there'll be no sunlight If I lose you, baby There'll be no clear skies If I lose you, baby Just like the clouds My eyes will do the same, if you walk away Everyday it'll rain, rain, ra-a-a-ain I'll never be your mother's favorite Your daddy can't even look me in the eye Ooh, if I was in their shoes, I'd be doing the same thing Sayin' "There goes my little girl Walkin' with that troublesome guy" But they're just afraid of something they can't understand Ooh, but little darlin' watch me change their minds Yeah for you I'll try I'll try I'll try I'll try I'll pick up these broken pieces 'til I'm bleeding If that'll make you mine 'Cause there'll be no sunlight If I lose you, baby There'll be no clear skies If I lose you, baby Just like the clouds My eyes will do the same, if you walk away Everyday it'll rain, rain, ra-a-a-ain Oh, don't just say (don't just say) goodbye (goodbye), Don't just say (don't just say) goodbye (goodbye) I'll pick up these broken pieces 'til I'm bleeding If that'll make it right 'Cause there'll be no sunlight If I lose you, baby There'll be no clear skies If I lose you, baby Just like the clouds My eyes will do the same, if you walk away Everyday it'll rain, rain, ra-a-a-ain

Aussie border cops find half ton of ecstasy hidden in meat grinders

01:37
NEWS, Oct. 7, 2018 — Australian Federal Police say they found about half a ton of ecstasy in four industrial meat grinders being imported into the country. The grinders, called mincing machines down under, were inside a shipping container that arrived in Port Botany from Turkey on Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, Australian police said. The joint operation between the AFP and Australian Border Force (ABF) made three arrests; officials estimate the value of the load at A$57 million. ABF officers targeted the container for screening, with their examination of one machine revealing approximately 60 packages of a brown granulated substance – each weighing around two kilograms – within the door cavity of the mincer. Presumptive testing of the substance returned a positive result for ecstasy. Further examination by the ABF revealed each of the four mincers contained similar packages. AFP investigators identified 248 packages within the four machines, containing a total of approximately 496 kilograms. Further forensic testing will be carried out by AFP forensics specialists to determine the exact weight and purity of the substance. It is estimated it could have a potential value of more than A$57 million. AFP officers conducted a controlled delivery of the consignment. On Oct. 6 2018, officers searched a business address in Clyde, NSW. A second search warrant was then executed at a nearby business where the consignment of four machines was seized. Tripping on Hallucinogenic Frogs (Part 1/3)

24:21
VICE heads to the Amazon on a hunt for its most hallucinogenic tree frogs. Watch the rest here: http://bit.ly/Frog-Tripping-2 http://bit.ly/Frog-Tripping-3 There is an Amazonian frog called Phyllomedusa Bicolor or the Sapo which I have been reading about for years. It is totally different from the psychedelic toads found in North America. The Sapo's venom produces an effect much closer to morphine than LSD, but really it's not like either of those things. It's a distinctly vomitous dissociative experience unlike anything else I've ever encountered. There has been a lot written about the chemistry of the venom, and it has been said to have a diverse array of effects. Some people think it's a miracle opioid which will yield new non-addictive painkillers. Others think it's a super-potent stimulant and appetite suppressant, and even a strange psychedelic capable of tuning hunters on to the mindset of their prey. In the 80s researchers found one of the constituents of Sapo venom in the urine of autistic children, and developed an entire theory of autism around it. I had to find out what this frog really does, but supposedly it cannot produce its venom in captivity. The only way to experience its unique trip is to travel down the Amazon River and catch one yourself, which is exactly what I did. — VICE Correspondent Hamilton Morris Watch more VICE documentaries here: http://bit.ly/VICE-Documentaries Subscribe to VICE for the best videos online: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE Check out our full video catalog: http://www.youtube.com/user/vice/videos Videos, daily editorial and more: http://vice.com Like VICE on Facebook: http://fb.com/vice Follow VICE on Twitter: http://twitter.com/vice Read our tumblr: http://vicemag.tumblr.com

Drivers stoned on marijuana test their driving skills

05:15
If you watched this video and liked Addy, you can watch outtakes of her here: http://kiro.tv/WFNEMZ CNN may have just posted their best piece of investigative journalism in years. In the following video, three drivers of varying ages got incredibly high on marijuana and test-drove cars around a course. A driving-ed instructor accompanied them to avert any chance of an accident, and police watched from the sidelines to spot any visible 'signs' of inebriation in their movements. The volunteers -- a young daily smoker, adult weekend smoker and elder infrequent smoker -- proceeded to test escalating levels of stupor against the new baseline 'legal limits' in Colorado and Washington state. They had to reach excesses of 5 times the legal limit before their ability to drive became impaired. In most cases, the danger they presented was driving too slowly or with frequent hesitations. Although hardly scientific, this test does offer some insight into a specter which has haunted us for years: marijuana legalization. Last November, the country watched tame and good-natured celebrations sweep Colorado and Washington after their pro-marijuana ballot passed. The sudden and complete lack of tension between public smokers and police was wonderful to see; it was like two opposing armies finally laying arms to rest. It was as if a part of America had leapt into a progressive future, giving the rest of us a glimpse into what might be. Could anyone deny that this was a microcosm of the future most have been waiting for? Despite resounding state level calls to end to the war on drugs, the DEA and federal government still loom overhead with murky legal gray zones. When asked by Barbara Walters what his current stance on the issue was, Obama said he would not make it a priority to go after recreational users in states that have passed legalization initiatives. This evasive, political response is to be expected: we aren't permitting drugs, but we won't fight the states on the issue. Perhaps it would be too much to ask for the president to fully legalize marijuana and end an obscene prohibition that imprisons millions of Americans. But if the political PR can be ignored, it is undoubtedly the right thing to do. For now, maybe the best tactic is to keep harassing citizens federally, so they demand protection from their states and take the issue off Obama's plate. So back to our drivers, and the issue many mothers are now concerned about: children having a new intoxicant to afflict their driving skills. How did the 'impaired' volunteers actually do? Well at a certain point, the substance had an undeniable effect on their ability to navigate a vehicle sensibly. But they all maintained surprising control, even at incredibly excessive levels of marijuana consumption. Moreover, unlike drunk drivers, they were very much aware of their state and agreed they were not on top of their game. Without over-indulging, it seems people's critical thinking can be trusted more with a few hits than a couple of drinks. When it comes to marijuana in America, there's still a long road ahead to change laws, perceptions and behavior. But it's progress worth making, as long as it gets us away from misinformed stereotypes like this.

Lithium Australia (ASX:LIT) Critical Stage of Development for Sileach Technology

05:11
Lithium Australia (ASX:LIT) has continued to advance their Sileach(TM) technology as they announced that pilot testing at ANSTO Minerals (a division of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation) had commenced. The first test consisted of a 1 day commissioning run of the Sileach(TM) circuit, after which process solutions and residual solids are being analysed prior to commencing continuous operations in about two weeks' time. Test work is being completed on trilithionite from Lepidolite Hill and spodumene concentrates fro Pilbara Minerals' (ASX:PLS) Pilgangoora Project. Lithium Australia has also commenced exploration work on a number of their prospective lithium projects in Western Australia, whilst plans were announced to spin-off the company's graphite assets. Analyst Comment: Lithium Australia (LIT) has continued to move forward on a number of fronts. We see potential value for shareholder in the following areas: Pilot Testing: This is a critical stage in the development of the Sileach(TM) technology. A positive outcome will give investors confidence regarding Sileach(TM) as an alternative technology for the recovery of lithium. Sileach(TM) has the potential to reduce the cost of lithium chemical production from hard rock sources by eliminating roasting, a major cost associated with chemical production, as well as increasing by-product credit revenue. The results of the test work from Lepidolite Hill and Pilgangoora are important for the validation of Sileach, however we believe the results from Pilgangoora will most likely have the most significant impact on the company's share price, given the potential for a Joint Venture with Pilbara Minerals for the development of a lithium conversion facility (depending on the outcome of a series of test work programs and feasibility studies). We expect results from the test work to be announced during October. Exploration: As highlighted in our initiation report, LIT has one of the largest portfolios of prospective lithium projects on the ASX. Despite this we believe there is little value in LIT's share price for these assets. Exploration work has commenced at Ravensthorpe and Greenbushes, both located in close proximity to two major producing lithium operations. A discovery at either project would result in a significant share price re-rating. The initial drill program at Ravensthope is due to commence in the coming months. Graphite IPO: LIT plans to spin-off their Graphite assets into a new ASX listed vehicle. Assuming LIT received equity for these assets, management may consider an in-specie distribution to shareholders in the future.

CRC ORE Early Career Researcher - Mitesh Chauhan

00:30
CRC ORE early career researcher Mitesh Chauhan describes his work on a new flotation test for the mining industry. The new technique requires significantly less time and sample material to achieve similar accuracy to the current method, enabling more tests to be done to improve understanding of the mineral characteristics. Mitesh is completing his PhD at The University of Queensland Sustainable Minerals Institute's JKMRC, in affiliation with the AMIRA GeM project. CRC ORE is established and supported under the Cooperative Research Centres program, an Australian Government Initiative.

Check out more episodes of Hamilton's Pharmacopeia here: http://bit.ly/1p4lfu9 Swaziland is a landlocked country sandwiched between South Africa and Mozambique. Despite Swaziland's small size, it boasts more hectares of land dedicated to growing Cannabis than all of India. It is also home to Swazi Gold, the legendary sativa strain. Hamilton Morris travels to Swaziland hoping to chemically analyze the cannabinoids present in some of the local strains. Instead, he finds a country steeped in political corruption and economic turmoil. Cannabis is viewed by many growers, users, and politicians as a drug that will cause insanity, but it may be Swaziland's only hope for economic stability. Driver 'high on drugs' pulls out in front of truck on highway | Breaking News US/Australia

02:27
★More News Channel - Entertainment Video►► http://bit.ly/2zUac3v This is the heart-stopping moment a driver allegedly high on drugs is sent skidding across a country highway after pulling out directly in front of a truck. The driver, a 27-year-old man, had called NRMA roadside assistance after running out of petrol on the M1 motorway near Minmi, north of Sydney. But when the NRMA technician arrived and filled his car with fuel, allegedly advising him he was in no state to be driving, he lurched suddenly onto the road.Dashcam footage shows the Kia four-wheel-drive, with a female passenger and dog inside, flying across the two-lane highway as the truck screeches to a halt.   The NRMA technician claimed the Kia driver had been acting 'erratically'. Remarkably, police say neither of the occupants of the Kia nor the dog were seriously hurt. The driver was taken to hospital and submitted to a blood test to check for illegal drugs and police say they are anticipating further action. Both vehicles were towed away and the road was closed. The driver was taken to the John Hunter Hospital and suffered impact injuries and damage caused by his seat belt, police from Lake Macquarie Highway Patrol said. The truck driver remained in hospital. His mother has said the driver 'remains in hospital unable to move,' on a Facebook post shared by Traffic and Highway Patrol Command.Police said the driver appeared to be under the influence of drugs, but the results of blood tests won't be available for 'weeks'.

Connect with Fit4FIFO now: http://instagram.com/fit4fifoaustralia http://facebook.com/fit4fifoaustralia Video transcript: - So how do you find the best way to find out about the next job or do you - Mates. - Mates? - Mates. - Yeah. - Mates and whispers and everyone's going somewhere and it's like a sinking ship so ... At the moment it's a sinking ship and you know where the rats are going. So the rats will be cooking when you're on call, later on. It's all about those connections and your buddies mainly. You make the decisions. You might wanna have a break. You might wanna go to the next job. You might wanna stay home and see the Mrs for a while. Look, it's all possible, it's just about you. - In terms of keeping employees happy, what do you think some things that employers might be lacking? - Oh, keeping them happy? - [Jason] Yeah. - Yeah, definitely eating canned soup. It's not all ... The food's pretty "How you going". The food's not always that good. I know they got to cook to a budget but yeah, sometimes it's pretty miserable so that's the first way to piss the boys off is with rubbishy food. - [Jason] Yeah, okay. - And then it's the beer selection. God bless working in WA, you know? They're only drinking light beers. I don't do light beers too well so my God, I don't think I'll be following the rats over to WA next week but yes here we're lucky to have full strength beer so we're pretty good this side. - [Jason] Nice. - I think a good gym too. - [Jason] Yeah definitely. - A good gym's really starting to ... I've noticed this one here's not much of ... Not very packed full of good gear so ... - When working in this industry I suppose you blokes getting into a routine and get very, I suppose, into it. What are some things they often maybe forget that may be important in life? - Oh really? I think some guys lose their sense of their goal. Why they're here. Now, if you're a little bit weak minded and that and this is what you know ... If you're a little bit weak minded you can be led astray and there's a few things that guys can get a little bit led astray on. That's the booze, drugs and the ladies. You really need to stay focused. You're not out here to suffer mate, you're here to earn some cash and be smart about it. But if you're a little bit weak mate, I've seen it many a time, you know? Guys just end up on the gear. Too much pissing and they blow our numbers and its failing drug tests and the next thing you know, they're gone and some of these guys are me best buds so it's really sad to see them down the road. - [Jason] Yeah definitely. - So you need to focus a bit and be your own man. Don't follow the herd. - Yeah. Say your best mate comes up to you at work and he says, "Look mate, I'm not coping well with this Fifo stuff." What would your advice then be? - Oh. Well we'd have to talk about what he's not coping with. Give me an example of what he couldn't be coping with. - Let's just say his ... ... Mrs is saying she misses him and he needs to be home for the kids but he's got himself in too much debt. He feels he can't get out of it. - Oh, he's certainly is in the shit isn't he? Yeah, good example there, Gee whizz. See, being a man with no kids myself, it'd be pretty hard mate. Maybe I could lend him some money. I'm not quite sure what I could do about that but he'd have to have a chinwag with the Mrs and see what was going on because that's a partner. They need to have a talk about it. Because if they're deep in debt mate, this is the only way it's gonna pull them out. So, going home might not pull them out of debt At least they'd be together but then they'd be whinging so it's about that goal again, isn't it? Coming back to that goal, smashing it and you just have to have a chat and see what we can do. - Could that be a common scenario or situation in this industry? - Yeah, yeah. Certainly is but it's ... They get into debt. The young fellas get into debt. They buy these cars but the problem is, cops, they don't pay cash. - [Jason] Yeah, okay. Yeah. - It's all right earning this money but don't take loans for nothing Just going there, you want the flash wheels, go in there with the cash. Just getting a loan because I can and I can't wait, no good. Without debt and without that burden mate, your Mrs and the kids should be okay and then you got the option. But with the debt it's ... I see a lot of people making that mistake with debt.

Snake Island (Full Length Documentary)

Like VICE News? Subscribe to our news channel: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Check out the Best of VICE here: http://bit.ly/VICE-Best-Of The highest concentration of one of the most venomous snakes in the world is located about 90 miles off the coast of Santos, Brazil, on a small, craggy chunk of otherwise uninhabitable land. It's known as Ilha da Queimada Grande, or Snake Island, and it's the only place you will find 2,000 or so of the wholly unique golden lancehead viper, or Bothrops insularis. When you step ashore, with a keen eye you spot one of these snakes roughly every 10 to 15 minutes after clearing the base of the island, and as many as one every six square yards in other parts of the island. This means, as you are walking through the waist-high brush, even with some good boots on, it's like walking through a minefield that moves and, instead of blowing you into chunks, slowly paralyzes you and liquefies your insides, as the golden lancehead does to the migrating birds it feeds on in the treetops. Well, "liquefying your insides" may be a stretch, but no one knows for sure because no one bitten has lived long enough even to be admitted to a hospital, or at least none of the researchers who accompanied VICE on their journey to Snake Island owned up to that fact. Nor did the Brazilian Navy, who allowed VICE exclusive access to document their annual maintenance inspection of Snake Island's lighthouse—which has been automated ever since the 1920s, after the old lighthouse keeper ran out of food and disappeared while picking wild bananas in a small grove near the shore. According to legend, he and the members of his rescue party died one by one, all alone and in search of one another after each had been missing for some time. The golden lancehead is so unique and its venom so potent that specimens procured by snake-smuggling "biopirates" can fetch up to $30,000 apiece on the black market (with prices going much higher depending on the location of the rich weirdo snake collector or, some have speculated, the black-market biopharmaceutical chemists attempting to beat Brazil on a patent). Is that the craziest fucking description of a documentary you've ever heard? The answer is yes. So of course VICE's editor-in-chief, Rocco Castoro, and senior producer, Jackson Fager, had to go there and nose around for themselves. On their return they said things like: "It was like a David Lynch movie through the prism of Satan's asshole. The anti-Galápagos. Darwin in reverse." "[It's] cut off from the mainland and perhaps the land of a long-buried pirate treasure, according to the stories from local fishermen. But they also told us there were aliens on the island, so pretty much anything goes. It's scorched earth. It's where I would send my worst enemies to live, and I look forward to setting up a business with the Brazilian government to do just that. After the World Cup, of course." "What I can tell you is that there are stone fucking steps hand-carved into the face of one of the prominent cliffs, all the way up. But you can't dock anywhere near there. There's also the possibility that [the venom] could be used for an anti-cancer drug, or perhaps anti-aging. Maybe it could save mankind. Whatever. They wouldn't have saved my ass." "There are blue locusts and so many of these weird, prehistoric-looking cockroaches on the ground at night that it crunches when you walk. Place is fucked. No one is allowed there for a reason. Don't ever go." "All that said, great shoot. Great diving, too." Technological Unemployment and Free Pizza

07:06
In recent months in Australia, it has become quite clear that many jobs are becoming obsolete due to technological unemployment. That is, unemployment caused by technological advances and the onset of automation. Death of the Driver One example is within the mining industry. Many mining sites now have fully automated trucks that drive themselves along a set route hauling iron ore as required. A once high paying truck driver job has become almost unnecessary as technology improves. I once worked for the Queensland Police Service (between 2007 and 2008) and I recall a number of police officers leaving their $50000 salaries to become truck drivers earning $100000+. Their logic was simple – why do something relatively dangerous and stressful like policing when instead they could be sitting in an air-conditioned cab getting more than twice the salary? It is predicted that by about 2035, there will be no more driving jobs – taxi drivers, truck drivers, couriers – they’ll all be gone. Uber has already been quite honest about it saying they plan to introduce an automated fleet as soon as it’s economically viable. Many observers highlight the negative impact of automation, that is, the large number of job losses. However, I’d like to talk about the many advantages. Benefits of Automation First, automated vehicles will be far safer than their human-driven counterparts. People get tired, distracted, look at their mobile phone, drink-drive, drug-drive, deal with the kids in the back seat, etc. We’re not designed to focus on one task for hours on end. Already the driverless cars being tested on the roads in North America have incredible safety records, so we can only assume that their safety will improve in the upcoming years. I foresee a society where ultimately it will become illegal to physically drive a vehicle due to the inherent danger involved. Once governments see the statistics and realise that humans are causing most of the road fatalities, they’ll be forced to act by a tech-savvy population. Second, the cost of goods and services will come down. If there are no more truck drivers to pay to deliver the groceries to the supermarkets, then ultimately the groceries will cost less. I was recently talking with a friend about automation in the fast food industry. It’s simply a matter of time before fast food restaurants no longer require workers. Hamburgers and French fries will be 100% made by robotic machinery. Technological Unemployment and the Cost of Goods Imagine a large pizza chain, let’s call them Pizza Preppers, who decide to automate their stores. Their pizza dough is made by an automated dough machine, rolled and prepared to an exact specification. The appropriate toppings are automatically cut and placed on the pizza as per the customer’s order. The pizza is put in the oven, cooked, sliced and boxed – all by machine. Finally, automated drones will deliver the pizza right to the customer’s door. All orders and payments will be handled online. When the shop is running low on tomatoes, an order will be placed with the distribution warehouse where a box of tomatoes will be packed onto an automated truck and delivered in an appropriate time-frame. Imagining further into the future, when the distribution warehouse runs low on tomatoes, it will in turn place an order with the farming network. Farms will also be fully automated. Drones will be smart enough to go out into the fields and pick appropriately ripe tomatoes and deliver them to the boxing centre. The boxing centre will automatically box the tomatoes and place them on automated delivery trucks to send to the distribution warehouses. Whenever the drones or trucks are low on power, they’ll automatically return to their charging stations (probably powered by renewable energy) where another fresh drone or truck will take their place. This cycle of demand, production and supply will continue on 24 hours a day with very little need for downtime. Ultimately, Pizza Preppers will realise that their costs have dramatically fallen. Due to competition with other automated pizza chains, they’ll be compelled to lower their prices even further. In Australia 2016, you can already buy a large pizza for $5.00. When automation hits our pizza stores, I imagine the price dropping to $1.00, or maybe even less. Eventually the CEO of Pizza Preppers decides that their costs are so negligible, that they decide that they don’t want money for their pizzas any more and find alternative ways to keep their company profitable (e.g. advertising on their boxes). The only thing they ask is that customers don’t abuse their free pizza policy, so implement measures to counter such abuse ... Hunting For A Rare Congolese Weed Strain With “The Kings of Cannabis” | VICE on HBO

15:31
Over the past 20 years, Franco Loja and Arjan Roskam, known as the "Kings of Cannabis," have made millions of dollars scouring the world for unique strains of weed to breed and then sell. Now, they've turned their sights on Equatorial Africa, specifically the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as their next gold mine — and a way to revolutionize the cannabis industry. "Equatorial Africa is one the best preserved because of the wars, the lack of infrastructure, political unrest. All these situations created isolation there," Loja explained. "So that's where we're going." Loja and Roskam built their global powerhouse on inbred strains of cannabis called "landraces" that they've collected from all over the world — Argentina, Australia, and Brazil, just to name a few spots. Without these strains, the duo's various breeding enterprises, Amsterdam coffeeshops, and even distribution centers wouldn't exist. VICE News met up with the “Kings of Cannabis” for a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to hunt for one of the rarest species of Cannabis yet, the original Congolese landrace. Arjan's been breeding some of the most famous marijuana strains in the world—like White Widow, Super Silver Haze, and many others—for over 20 years. In 1992 he opened his first coffee shop in Amsterdam and has since crafted his marijuana-breeding skills into a market-savvy empire known as Green House Seed Company, which rakes in millions of dollars a year. He's won 38 Cannabis Cups and has dubbed himself the King of Cannabis. VICE joins Arjan and his crew of strain hunters in Colombia to look for three of the country's rarest types of weed, strains that have remained genetically pure for decades. In grower's terms, these are called landraces. We trudge up mountains and crisscross military checkpoints in the country's still-violent south, and then head north to the breathtaking Caribbean coast. As the dominoes of criminalization fall throughout the world, Arjan is positioned to be at the forefront of the legitimate international seed trade. Rio Olympics 2016 doping: The Olympics have been dope so far, but not in a good way

01:32
RIO DE JANEIRO — The Rio Olympics hasn’t nearly been the trainwreck the media thought — hoped — it would be. Sure, a few thefts have occurred, but nothing out of the ordinary for Brazil. What has been a concern though is the problem with athletes doping. Not to point any fingers, China and Russia, but what do you guys think this is? U.S. baseball? Russian doping culture has gotten so out of control that even their paralympics team has been banned. Then there’s the Chinese. China’s top male swimmers, Ning Zetao and cry baby Sun Yang, have both been caught with chemistry in the past. Female swimmer Chen Xinyi tested positive for drugs prior to arriving in Rio and has been suspended from competition following a hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Friday. CAS also declared Polish weightlifter Tomasz Zielinksi ineligible, as well as Bulgarian 3,000-meter steeplechaser Silvia Danekova. Part of the blame must also go to the inept sporting governance bodies like the International Olympic Committee. What can be done to ensure that performance enhancing drugs stay out of global competitive sports? ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. What Hillary Clinton really thinks

51:45
Hillary Clinton’s theory of politics is unfashionable, but she doesn’t care. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO On page 239 of What Happened, Hillary Clinton reveals that she almost ran a very different campaign in 2016. Before announcing for president, she read Peter Barnes’s book With Liberty and Dividends for All, and became fascinated by the idea of using revenue from shared natural resources, like fossil fuel extraction and public airwaves, alongside revenue from taxing public harms, like carbon emissions and risky financial practices, to give every American “a modest basic income.” Her ambitions for this idea were expansive, touching on not just the country’s economic ills but its political and spiritual ones. “Besides cash in people’s pockets,” she writes, “it would be also be a way of making every American feel more connected to our country and to each other.”  This is the kind of transformative vision that Clinton was often criticized for not having. It’s an idea bigger than a wall, perhaps bigger even than single-payer health care or free college. But she couldn’t make the numbers work. Every version of the plan she tried either raised taxes too high or slashed essential programs. So she scrapped it. “That was the responsible decision,” she writes. But after the 2016 election, Clinton is no longer sure that “responsible” is the right litmus test for campaign rhetoric. “I wonder now whether we should’ve thrown caution to the wind, embraced [it] as a long-term goal and figured out the details later,” she writes. What Happened has been sold as Clinton’s apologia for her 2016 campaign, and it is that. But it’s more remarkable for Clinton’s extended defense of a political style that has become unfashionable in both the Republican and Democratic parties. Clinton is not a radical or a revolutionary, a disruptor or a socialist, and she’s proud of that fact. She’s a pragmatist who believes in working within the system, in promising roughly what you believe you can deliver, in saying how you’ll pay for your plans. She is frustrated by a polity that doesn’t share her “thrill” over incremental policies that help real people or her skepticism of sweeping plans that will never come to fruition. She believes in politics the way it is actually practiced, and she holds to that belief at a moment when it’s never been less popular. This makes Clinton a more unusual figure than she gets credit for being: Not only does she refuse to paint an inspiring vision of a political process rid of corruption, partisanship, and rancor, but she’s also actively dismissive of those promises and the politicians who make them. On Tuesday morning, I sat down with Clinton for an hour on the first official day of her book tour. It is a cliché that stiff candidates become freer, easier, and more confident after they lose — see Gore, Al — but it is true for Clinton. Jon Stewart used to talk of the “buffering” you could see happening in the milliseconds between when Clinton was asked a question and when she answered; the moments when she played out the angles, envisioned the ways her words could be twisted, and came up with a response devoid of danger but suffused with caution. That buffering is gone. In our conversation, she was as quick and confident as I’ve seen her, making the case for her politics without worrying too much about the coalitional angles or the possible lines of offense. And she says plenty that can, and will, offend. In our discussion, she lit into Bernie Sanders’s single-payer plan, warned that Donald Trump is dragging us down an authoritarian path, spoke openly of the role racism and white resentment played in the campaign, and argued that the outcome of the 2016 election represented a failure of the media above all. This was Clinton unleashed, and while she talked about what happened, it was much more interesting when she talked about what she believed should have happened. - Ezra Klein Editor-in-chief, Vox This interview was recorded on September 12, 2017. Andrew Baker on 'TARGET30-Tax welfare churn & the Australian welfare state'

04:57
'TARGET30 - Tax welfare churn & the Australian welfare state' is a new research paper released by The Centre for Independent Studies in March 2013. Andrew Baker, a policy analyst and author of the report, discusses the report's findings in this video. Government in Australia currently spends $316 billion on the welfare state, and around half of this is on welfare churn. There are savings to be found by reforming the age pension, family payments and the disability pension. TARGET30 is a campaign by the CIS to reduce government spending to under 30% of GDP within 10 years. For information on TARGET30 please visit www.cis.org.au You can follow the CIS on Twitter @CISOZ and find us on Facebook as 'The Centre for Independent Studies' for more updates.

Growing Calls In US For Legalised Marijuana

03:06
A new poll finds 52% of Americans are now in favour of legalising the drug as producers say it creates jobs.A national survey has found the majority of Americans are now in favour of legalising marijuana. A study by the Pew Research Centre found 52% of people thought the use of the drug should be made legal, with people aged 18 to 32 most in favour. Even opponents of moves to legalise the drug nationwide - something compared to the end of prohibition of alcohol in the 1930s - admit it is probably now inevitable. Colorado and Washington state voted to legalise the drug last November but it remains illegal at the federal level, prompting a debate about how police should treat producers and users. In the Rocky Mountains state of Colorado, growers are preparing for a wave of new customers once authorities have worked out how to implement Amendment 64, the vote to legalise. At the moment only licensed medical users, carrying what is called the Red Card, can buy cannabis from dispensaries. Andy Williams, who owns and runs the Medicine Man dispensary in Denver, is rushing to complete construction work which will expand his growing capacity by a third. He already has 4,000 plants, carefully cultivated in high-tech "grow rooms" that look more like a science laboratory than the traditional image of cannabis production. He has invested hundreds of thousands in industrial-scale growing. He told Sky News: "It really hasn't hurt anything. We don't see a sky rocket in terms of our kids using it, we don't see lots of people getting into accidents on the highway because of it, we don't see any negative effects. "What we are seeing is jobs, taxes, all sorts of good things so let's just take the curtain off this and say what it is - it is recreational." He estimates a boom in sales once Amendment 64 takes effect and anyone over 21 can buy the drug legally. Already the first Amsterdam-style coffee shops have started to spring up. Veronica Carpio, who owns the Front Tea and Art Shop and used to run a dispensary, said: "I would say it is time to get over it. "We have had these biases in our culture for decades and they have impacted peoples lives horribly and negatively. It is time to move past that and evolve." Her customers believe any attempt to roll back the new law will fail. "It is historical, it is trailblazing," Heidi Perreira told Sky News: "There is no way it can go back." But some in Colorado are unwilling to give up the fight. Douglas County has voted to ban cannabis-related commerce, in effect becoming a dry county. Jack Hilbert, the county's commissioner, said the decision was taken to reflect the fact that voters there had consistently rejected legalisation. He said: "There are too many unanswered questions about the safety of this product." Even he accepts there is an inevitability about nationwide legalisation. The profits for businesses and the taxes collected by states will prove hard to resist. Sleep Comes After Death - Coal and Clay

04:31
Here is the 3rd song from our EP "What You Let Define You" Lyrics: Soon I’ll be torn apart And you’ll finally see what’s inside I’m sad to say there’s nothing left but pitiful pride Living two lives leaves no time for sleep I’m burning alive; it burns so deep What a beautiful demise I’ve become I can’t count on coal and clay to build me up I’m blind to the effects of my drug I made a coffin and called it a bed Maybe I’ll finally sleep when I’m dead I’ve searched for an answer My hands were shaking My mind was racing My body had grown numb Because my soul had grown to cold to touch. Maybe one day you'll come back, and light my flame (Drown myself again) I swear I won't burn out, Never again, never again Maybe one day you'll come back, And light my flame (Drown myself again) I promised but I Have my doubts, I have my doubts (In self sabotage) When I finally realized my worth I had lead for feet I didn’t belong on this earth But fate is bitter sweet I wish that I had passed that night The embers inside kept me alive Choking back on memories I lost myself I can’t catch my breath My regrets dragged me inches from death I would have taken others with me, But I wouldn't care, Because my soul is dark and dim as coal I was never aware But now I'm alive I was never there On the outside I don’t care I'm dead inside Where are you Where the fuck were you? Am I a lost soul God can you spare me the silence? I don’t know what happened that night. But it gave me new sight Being so close to death was humbling Maybe one day you'll come back, and light my flame (Drown myself again) I swear I won't burn out, Never again, never again Maybe one day you'll come back, And light my flame (Drown myself again) I promised but I Have my doubts, I have my doubts (In self sabotage) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sleepcomesafterdeath Instagram: https://instagram.com/sleepcomesafterdeath Twitter: https://twitter.com/SCAD_Band More videos coming soon!
