Thousands of tradespeople commute from Perth by plane, working 12-hour shifts on 24-hour-a-day mining operations. Even the newest qualified earn well over $100,000 a year, but the money has consequences: In towns near mines, prices for everything from property to services are high. Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas reports from Western Australia.

Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJ_14mBrc3f1lJv9CtNgQUA?sub_confirmation=1 Chris Ellison’s Mineral Resources has acquiredKoolyanobbing the iron ore operation near Southern Cross from US miner Cleveland-Cliffs.Cliffs revealed the sale in a statement Tuesday evening with MinRes expected to make an announcement early Wednesday morning. The deal is expected to save the jobs of about 120 port workers at Esperance as well as those of another roughly 300 staff who work across MinRes’ Carina mine, which is scheduled to close later this year, Cliffs’ Koolyanobbing mine and along the railway line. The value of the deal is unknown but Cliffs said it would reduce by between $US65 million and $US75 million the total estimated closure costs of about $220 million, which included breaking $90 million in long term contracts with suppliers.Mines Minister Bill Johnston is expected to comment on the deal at the first day of the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies annual conference at Crown Perth on Wednesday morning.Cliffs chairman, president and chief executive Lourenco Goncalves said the company was pleased to have reached agreement on a transaction that not only brought value to Cliffs shareholders, but also represented the potential for continued job opportunities for WA employees who would be impacted by the pending closure of the Koolyanobbing complex.Cliffs announced in March it would end mining at Koolyanobbing and would make its last shipment of ore from the end of June after accepting big discounts on its low-grade ore.WestBusiness revealed in May the State Government was working to help secure a buyer for Koolyanobbing and posited MinRes as an obvious buyer given its existing mining operating in the Yilgarn at Carina, and the Government’s decision late last year to refuse its application to continue mining at the nearby Helena Aurora range because of its environmental significance.MinRes is due to wrap up mining and shipments from Carina by the end of the year.Separately, the company is involved in what has emerged as .While the company has a $280 million all-scrip deal in place with the junior miner’s board, Andrew Forrest’s Fortescue Metals Group and Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting have since emerged with 19 per cent stakes in the company, throwing its takeover plans in doubt.Cleveland-Cliffs’ Australian business unit’s financial accounts show it swung from a $100.9 million profit in 2016 to an $11.8 million loss last year as widening discounts for its lower-grade ore bit into its revenue along with a $14.9 million impairment on the value of the Koolyanobbing assets. The miner’s revenue in Australia fell by more than $132 million as the discount continued to grow towards the end of 2017. #MinRes, #buysKoolyanobbing, #save, #hundreds, #mine, #jobs #BusinessMiningBusinessIronore

Fortescue Metals Group (ASX:FMG) celebrated the official opening of its 40 million tonne per annum (mtpa) Kings Valley project at the Solomon Hub, marking the completion of the US$9.2 billion expansion of its Pilbara operations. The completion of Kings Valley, 60 kilometres north of Tom Price, has lifted Fortescue's production capacity to 155mtpa, affirming the company's position as a reliable and competitive supplier of iron ore to customers throughout Asia. The project was officially opened today by the Governor of Western Australia, His Excellency Malcolm McCusker AC CVO QC, at an event attended by the Prime Minister's representative, The Honourable Bob Baldwin MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry. "Today marks one of the most important milestones in Fortescue's history," Fortescue Chairman and Founder Andrew Forrest said. "We announced a major expansion of our port, rail and mining operations in November 2010 and set ourselves the ambitious target of completing the projects by June 2014. Today we are celebrating an extraordinary achievement that is testament to the hard work and commitment of everyone at Fortescue, and the thousands of people who worked on these projects." The US$9.2 billion expansion included the construction of the greenfields Solomon Hub in the Hamersley Ranges, one of the world's largest iron ore developments comprising Kings Valley and the nearby 20mtpa Firetail mine; an expansion of the Christmas Creek mine to 50mtpa; and major extensions of Fortescue's world class port and rail facilities. Fortescue Chief Executive Officer Nev Power said the Solomon Hub represents a valuable new source of low cost production for Fortescue with its low strip ratios playing an important in role in reducing the company's overall operating costs. "The Firetail and Kings Valley projects have evolved Fortescue's product mix. Channel Iron Deposit (CID) ore produced from Kings Valley will become a new stand-alone product while ore from Firetail is blended with Chichester ores to create the well-received Fortescue Blend." Mr Power said Fortescue's support for local industry and jobs was evident with 86 per cent of the money spent on the Kings Valley project going to Australian suppliers. "An integral feature of the success at Solomon is the way we have integrated employment and sustainable business opportunities for Aboriginal people to break the cycle of disadvantage. Fortescue and its contracting partners have awarded 22 contracts and sub-contracts at Solomon to Aboriginal-owned businesses worth a combined value of $583 million. "A total of 175 Aboriginal people work at the Solomon Hub for Fortescue and its contracting partners, including 44 graduates of Fortescue's Vocational Training and Education Centre (VTEC) in Roebourne."

Information about the graduate program at Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) can be found at http://www.fmgl.com.au/people_and_careers/Graduates. In this video Ben talks about his experience as a graduate Mechanical Engineer. "I started working as a Mechanical Engineer graduate in January 2011. Since I started I've had rotations in the engineering departments in Port Hedland and in Perth at the Fortescue Centre. While I was in Port Headland I had the opportunity to work on the design, fabrication and installation of a new type of transfer chute for the Port. This was a multi-million dollar project based on a completely new design and with a very tight schedule. Not only did I learn a great deal about chute design and materials handling, but it also gave me exposure to project management. The best thing about working at Fortescue is being a part of a company that is growing so rapidly. The speed of the expansion creates many exciting opportunities and provides a large variety of work. As a graduate, the ability to rotate to different areas of the business is something I consider to be invaluable. It provides the opportunity to learn how different areas of the business operate, the different types of equipment involved and most importantly to decide what sort of job you would like to pursue in your future career. I would advise all graduates to take every opportunity they can to rotate around the business during their two year graduate program."

Fortescue Metals Group chief executive officer Nev Power and Deloitte Access Economics partner Chris Richardson launch a report into the Western Australian gas market. Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX: FMG) has called for the enforc ement of Retention Lease "Use it, or Lose it" policies to encourage the rational and market-based development of Western Australia's abundant gas reserves. In launching a report by Deloitte Access Economics for Fortescu e, Western Australia Gas Sector Analysis, Fortescue Chief Executive Officer Nev Power said WA's significant natural gas advantage should translate into both a world leading LNG export industry and competitive and secure domestic gas supplies to drive jobs and economic growth. "Australia faces strong, global competition and this report is part of our focus as a company on being as cost competitive as possible," Mr Power said. "Fortescue's vision is to be the safest, lowest cost iron ore producer. By getting the policy settings right, we could make a long term switch from imported diesel to reliable, competitively priced Australian natural gas." Fortescue is the world's fourth largest producer of iron ore and a significant energy user. At its current production capacity of 155 million tonnes a year, Fortescue has forecast energy costs of more than US$800 million in FY15. Fortescue's strategy of switching from diesel to gas across its Pilbara operations is under way with the construction of the Fortescue River Gas Pipe line, the longest to be built in WA in a decade. The pipeline will deliver gas to the Solomon Hub from early 2015 for use in the existing power station. This single initiative will save Fortescue approximately $20 million a year as well as reducing carbon emissions.
