Questions Surround Barrick Gold, Freeport-McMoRan, Sibanye Gold - Kitco News

03:30
Kitco News' Alex Letourneau discusses Barrick Gold Corporation, Freeport-McMoRan and South Africa on this edition of "Mining Minutes." Barrick Gold faces a $16 million fine from Chile for not meeting its water management system deadlines to prevent contamination around the mine in Pascua-Lama. Despite this setback, the mine is expected to yield between 800k-850k ounces of gold and 35 million ounces of silver annually for the first 5 years of production, at cash costs under $200 per ounce. Freeport-McMoRan is still dealing with the tragic mine collapse in Papua New Guinea that killed 28 workers two weeks ago. Finally, Sibanye Gold cut 11,000 jobs in South Africa on Thursday and said that there may be more job cuts. Kitco News, May 30, 2013. 07:28
Giant waste-spewing mine turns to battleground in Indonesia TORONTO – Every year, Freeport-McMoRan dumps tens of millions of tons of mining waste into the Ajkwa River system in Indonesia. The company has been doing it for decades, and is demanding the right to keep at it for decades to come. The discharge of what are called tailings, the leftovers of mineral extraction, is perfectly legal under Freeport’s current contract with the government. But recently, after more than a year of tense negotiations over the terms of a new deal, Indonesia suddenly chang...

However, while in a public parking lot, we were told to leave by a sub-contractor. There was no barrier, etc that we crossed to access the public lot. Have a slight sore throat from being out there for 1-1.5 hrs! This creek where the leak was, runs right behind a child care center, homes and businesses are approx 15-20' from it. Opinion: Got that real 'Silkwood' feeling. The sub-contractors were shadowing us during our visit to the public roads, sidewalks, etc.

Cryptocurrencies Here To Stay, Bitcoin Not The Last -- Belpointe's Nelson

06:14
David Nelson, chief strategist with Belpointe Asset Management, stops in to chat about Bitcoin, Freeport McMoRan's earnings results, as well as CEO Ian Adkerson's $36 million severance package, and tops it off with insights on the gold market. Nelson told Kitco News that cryptocurrencies are here to stay, noting that JP Morgan has filed a patent for a Bitcoin-style payment system. Nelson also comments on Freeport McMoRan's 4Q earnings beating the streets expectations but cautions that Indonesia's new tax export is something to look out for, especially with the company's enormous Grasberg complex in the middle of it. Nelson also touches on FCX's CEO Ian Adkerson's large severance pay and the trend of seeing these types of deals in Fortune 500 companies. Wrapping it up, Nelson says gold prices will have a tough opponent in the Fed this year as he expects more tapering but also points out that gold hasn't dropped. Quaterra Resources CEO Steven Dischler Talks Plans for Yerington, Bear Deposits in Nevada

05:19
Quaterra Resources (TSXV:QTA,OTCMKTS:QTRRF,FWB:QR2) President & CEO Steven Dischler spoke to the Investing News Network about the Yerington, Nevada copper projects. He explains, "About 18 months ago we really reset our strategy for the company in response to a difficult market. That involved selling our non-Yerington assets and also really focusing on efficiency of our operations. In addition to that, we thought that given the size and complexity of Yerington, that it would make sense to have a strategic partner to help us with acceleration of our exploration and development there. So about a year ago we entered into an option agreement with Freeport Nevada, subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan, to help us with our Yerington projects." Mr. Dischler says that investors should watch out for the following catalysts in 2015, "We're going to be commencing drilling on the Bear Deposit, which is a known mineralized area in our district. It's a very large system, has historic drilling in it, and part of a big district. We want to begin drilling in the third quarter of this year - July or August - shortly. We're also doing some exploratory geophysical work on our ground there. We'd be presenting our drill results as we get them, through next year, and then lastly, we want to finish the sale of our Nieves Silver Project in Mexico. We entered into an agreement back in December of 2014 for the sale of that and the payments are coming in over the next 12 months."
