Fleet Management: Using Data to Successfully Manage Ultra-Class Trucks

05:46
Anglo-American’s Dawson Mine lies in the rich coal country of Central Queensland, Australia. It’s a very busy site in a tough environment, and the mine’s large hauling fleet produces a lot of health data — data that was difficult and time-consuming to sift through. As a result, maintenance of the machines was more reactive than proactive. To improve the site’s fleet uptime, Cat dealer Hastings-Deering employed a Condition Monitoring program that has been enabled by Cat Equipment Care Advisor — a web-based tool that combines equipment and application data with real-time analytics, plus the combined expertise of the global dealer network. This implementation is helping the mine better plan and schedule repairs before problems escalate — reducing costs and improving the availability of the fleet.

What is a Fuel Management System - What are fuel management systems

03:18
http://fuelmonitoringsystems.com/what-is-a-fuel-management-system Fuel management systems are used to control and monitor fuel issues and fuel consumptions of vehicles and equipment for the transport, construction and mining industries. Fuel management systems effectively control, measure and manage fuel issues automatically giving access to fuel for authorised vehicles, plant and equipment whilst not allowing fuel transactions to unauthorised vehicles. Automated fuel management systems can control and monitor fuel issues for smaller companies with just one site or the larger companies with multiple fuelling sites across the country. The information collected from these fuel transactions is then stored electronically and transferred via networks, the internet or cellular communication for use in reports for the transport manager, department heads, and accounts cost analysis and fleet managers. There are several types of fuel management systems but they all have one common goal, and that's to: Accurately identify the vehicle to be filled. Accurately identify the driver if required. Accept the odometer reading or hour meter reading. Validate the odometer or hour meter reading against its database. Authorise the transaction for the correct fuel type. The data collected would then be transferred instantly or on a schedule to the computer systems responsible for reporting and analysis.

Fuel: How to Maximize Material Moved Per Liter

07:48
Fuel is one of the greatest ongoing costs on a mine — and one of the best opportunities to affect real savings through technology and best practice implementation. This video examines two ways you can lower your fuel costs: by reducing the fuel you burn and by increasing the tons you move per liter. Improving efficiency is a key to both, and technology can help. By using Cat MineStar™ Terrain, miners can be sure that they’re moving the right material to the right place the first time. This increase in efficiency eliminates rehandling and reduces the fuel that would be burned as a result. We’ll hear from a miner who has successfully used Terrain to reduce fuel consumption. In addition, we’ll illustrate how haul road design can be improved to impact fuel consumption. Using Cat MineStar Fleet, a mine in Australia increased the time between fueling to reduce consumption while increasing productivity and profitability.

Alternative Fuel for Coal and Petroleum Coke: SpecFuel

04:46
Video Transcript: Across North America, businesses and governments are seeking cleaner and economical alternative energy sources. Waste Management sees waste as a resource and is a leader in the development of innovative technologies to extract the value from the waste stream. One of these technologies is Processed Engineered Fuel, or SpecFUEL, which is produced by Waste Management. SpecFUEL is both an environmentally beneficial and economic alternative for coal and petroleum coke. SpecFUEL is an alternative fuel manufactured from high-energy value materials extracted from post-recycled municipal solid waste. Using mechanical sorting equipment, waste is segregated with materials of value, extracted to be recycled. The remaining residual materials are shredded, dried, and densified to create an alternative fuel. The fuel burns cleaner than coal and petroleum coke and can be co-combusted with or replace coal in its entirety. This alternative fuel is manufactured under strict engineering controls and designed to meet strict end-user solid fuel specifications with virtually no process emissions. Compared to refuse-derived fuel, SpecFUEL is a refined, uniform product with low ash and moisture, and a higher and more consistent BTU heating value. It's also easy to transport. Processed engineered fuel is a technology being used in Europe and Waste Management has developed a commercial production facility located at its Covel Gardens Disposal Facility in San Antonio, Texas. The facility has a processing capacity of 300,000 tons of waste per year and can generate 165,000 tons of fuel per year. The fuel generated at this facility is being used by industrial customers in the surrounding area. The economic benefits of SpecFUEL are numerous. SpecFUEL is ideal for any industrial user that is using coal to produce energy or steam, looking to reduce pollutant emissions, and make use of a product that is diverted from landfills. This includes companies in chemical, pulp and paper, textiles, pharmaceutical and metal manufacturing, as well as kiln based cement plants, utilities and district energy facilities. SpecFUEL supplements or replaces coal or petroleum coke to produce steam, electricity, or heat. It's a low fossil carbon, high BTU energy source, may be eligible for Renewable Energy Credits in some states, and can be used in existing energy facilities with little or no modification of solid fuel systems. For industrial users of coal and petroleum coke, SpecFUEL is a low sulfur emission energy source. It can also be part of a closed-loop system, allowing customers to use their own waste as a fuel source. "The system converts up to 55% of the waste materials processed into engineered fuel pellets. Of the remaining residuals, up to 10% could be recycled. Collectively, up to 65% of the waste materials processed could be diverted from landfill disposal." Waste Management is also exploring the diversion of food and yard waste, which could add another 25% of the remaining materials diverted from the waste stream. A number of states recognized waste-based fuel as an alternative energy source and allow electricity producers using it to earn Renewable Energy Credits. "SpecFUEL is an example of our company's commitment to new and innovative Waste Technologies to extract value from the waste stream." Waste Management is your energy partner for a processed, engineered fuel that is both an environmentally beneficial and economic replacement for coal and petroleum coke. Processed Engineered Fuel, or SpecFUEL, produced by Waste Management.

Petrocity Kenya - Honeywell's Integrated Solutions & Services Improve Terminal Operations

05:22
Long-term economic growth in Kenya has led to an increased demand for petroleum products, which makes marketers seek larger storage capacity to mitigate disruptions in the distribution system and enhance supplies. Independent oil marketers and trading companies are now investing in new storage facilities. One such company is Petrocity Energy Ltd. Petrocity built a greenfield terminal storage facility at Konza, near the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, 70 km south-east of Nairobi, which is directly connected to the Kenya Pipeline between Mombasa and Kisumu. This is the 1st of seven terminals on the pipeline and stores gasoline, diesel, and kerosene. This strategic position ensures petroleum products can be distributed reliably and quickly, and will help meet Nairobi’s growing demand for fuel. The city and the surrounding region consume more than 65 percent of Kenya’s oil resources. To satisfy these demanding requirements for its terminal operations, Petrocity contracted Honeywell to provide integrated solutions and services. Watch this video case study to learn more. Concentric Energy Management System (EMS) | Video 1

00:06
Concentric Energy Management System (EMS) offers 50% fuel saving The same market drivers to reduce fuel consumption, to reduce emissions and improve vehicle control as well as productivity that have been the focus of Haldex gear product development have influenced the development of a revolutionary technology called EMS. Contrary to other approaches where electronic control strategies were developed to control existing hydraulic equipment, Concentric started from the opposite direction, devising an optimum control strategy and then successfully building the hydraulic equipment to execute it. Concentric Energy Management System is intended primarily for off-road applications, such as wheel loaders, excavators, forklifts and for on-road vehicles with a stop-start duty cycle, such as buses, refuse, military, mining, and delivery vehicles. EMS is a total vehicle hydraulic energy management system. A hydraulic system has two main advantages over electric hybrid systems in the context of heavy vehicles: it can store energy fast and efficiently, unlike batteries and it can distribute energy in a totally controlled manner, unlike capacitors. The EMS system is distinct from all other hydraulic hybrid systems in that the energy can be transferred instantly and simultaneously to all the functions within the vehicle. The system works by converting vehicle or implement kinetic energy to fluid energy during the braking and implement lowering cycles and simultaneously using it for other functions or storing it within a central accumulator. The vehicle's hydraulic circuits are mechanically coupled via pump/motor units but operate completely independently. Energy transfers are not serial or subject to a hierarchical protocol, which means that energy recovered from one function does not need to be stored before it can be used in another. Closed loop electronics allow more precise control of energy conversion, minimizing waste. EMS also allows the engine to be completely decoupled from the wheel drives and the hydraulic circuits operating implements. This means that the engine can be designed and sized to run at peak efficiency throughout its duty cycle. Steady state running extends engine life and makes it easier to meet escalating environmental and regulatory demands not only because of increased efficiency and lower emissions but also because of the reduced noise and vibration profile of the whole machine. Fuel usage is dependent upon vehicle duty cycle but fuel savings of up to 50% can be obtained. In addition to significant reductions in fuel consumption Concentric EMS, provides additional benefits for OEMs engine and vehicle designers. The extremely fast and stable response of EMS will enable more productive, more comfortable and safer machines to be developed. EMS also eliminates a number of power train components, including transmissions, differential, drive shafts, torque converter, power take-off systems and PTO pumps. EMS development has progressed through high-power system testing within a laboratory environment. This includes implement energy recovery, brake energy recovery, engine management/augmentation, implement control (linear and rotational), ratiomentric steering, and associated electronic controls on systems

The New Solution To Our Nuclear Waste Problem

02:59
According to some scientists, we must begin using more nuclear power in order to prevent global warming from accelerating. But that creates a huge nuclear waste problem. But scientists at the University of Sheffield think they might have found a very unique way of handing it that could make nuclear waste a problem of the past. Read More: Nuclear Fuel Processes http://www.nei.org/Knowledge-Center/Nuclear-Fuel-Processes "Nuclear power plants do not burn any fuel. Instead, they use uranium fuel, consisting of solid ceramic pellets, to produce electricity through a process called fission." What is Uranium? How Does it Work? http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/Nuclear-Fuel-Cycle/Introduction/What-is-Uranium--How-Does-it-Work-/ "On a scale arranged according to the increasing mass of their nuclei, uranium is one of the heaviest of all the naturally-occurring elements (Hydrogen is the lightest). Uranium is 18.7 times as dense as water." Managing Radioactive Materials & Waste http://www.epa.gov/radiation/manage.html "Any activity that produces or uses radioactive materials generates radioactive waste. Mining, nuclear power generation, and various processes in industry, defense, medicine, and scientific research produce by products that include radioactive waste. Radioactive waste can be in gas, liquid or solid form, and its level of radioactivity can vary. " Radioactive Waste Management http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/Nuclear-Fuel-Cycle/Nuclear-Wastes/Radioactive-Waste-Management/ "All parts of the nuclear fuel cycle produce some radioactive waste (radwaste) and the relatively modest cost of managing and disposing of this is part of the electricity cost, i.e. it is internalised and paid for by the electricity consumers." How does nuclear waste disposal work? http://science.howstuffworks.com/nuclear-waste-disposal.htm "Nuclear waste epitomizes the double-edged sword of modern technology. It's a toxic and radioactive byproduct of nuclear medicine, nuclear weapons manufacturing and nuclear power plants. In short, it's the type of waste that reflects one of humankind's greatest leaps in technology, but it also demonstrates our inability to deal with our own advances." A New Approach to Military Nuclear Waste http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/06/a-new-approach-to-military-nuclear-waste/?_r=0 "The United States has many pressing nuclear waste problems, but the worst may be the leftovers from the manufacturing of nuclear weapons." This company cleans up nuclear waste by turning it into glass http://grist.org/list/this-company-cleans-up-nuclear-waste-by-turning-it-into-glass/ "Among all of the terrible ways to get rid of nuclear waste, there's one that stands above the rest for being a little less horrible: turning the radioactive parts into glass, a process called 'vitrification.'" Glass Offers Improved Means of Storing Nuclear Waste, Researchers Say http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/08/120822101115.htm "University of Sheffield researchers have shown, for the first time, that a method of storing nuclear waste normally used only for High Level Waste (HLW), could provide a safer, more efficient, and potentially cheaper, solution for the storage and ultimate disposal of Intermediate Level Waste (ILW)." Nuclear Power Needed To Slow Climate Change, Experts Say http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/04/nuclear-power-needed_n_4211792.html "Some of the world's top climate scientists say wind and solar energy won't be enough to head off extreme global warming, and they're asking environmentalists to support the development of safer nuclear power as one way to cut fossil fuel pollution." A Message from Dr. Kerry Emanuel http://bit.ly/1fc6Dpu "As climate and energy scientists concerned with global climate change, we are writing to urge you to advocate the development and deployment of safer nuclear energy systems." Extracting moon goo is no longer a passive endeavor. Capsuleers will now have to anchor Athanor or Tatara refineries at a special moon warp-in point and fit these refineries with a standup moon drill. The drill will fire at the surface of the moon, extracting a chunk and pulling it into orbit with its tractor beam. Once the moon chunk is close enough to the refineries, capsuleers in control of the structure can fracture it into ore - both familiar asteroid belt ore and new moon ore that can be refined into elements used for reactions.
