IIED ASM dialogues in Ghana: Josephine Valajega
Mineworkers, small mine owners, students and other community members on Tarwka, Western Region, Ghana joined the International Institute for Environment and Development for a dialogue event in early January 2016. During four days, they shared their thoughts about the event and what they learned about the artisanal and small-scale mining sector in Ghana. Josephine Valajega is a graduate mining engineering student at the University of Mines and Technology in Tarkwa, Ghana. She shares with us why Ghanaian young people should focus on the positive side of ASM and consider how they could contribute to the sector. More details: www.iied.org/mining-dialogues

Wide of area where gold is bought 24. Mid shot of sign 25. Various of store-worker showing gold 26. Close-up of worker putting gold into bowl to weigh 27. Close-up of gold in bowl STORYLINE: A gold rush that accelerated with the onset of the 2008 global recession is compounding the woes of the Amazon basin, laying waste to Peruvian rain forest and spilling tons of toxic mercury into the air and water. With gold's price soaring globally as the metal became a hedge against financial uncertainty, the army of small-scale miners in the state of Madre de Dios has swelled to some 40-thousand. The result: Diesel exhaust sullies the air, trees are toppled to get at the sandy, gold-flecked earth and the scars inflicted on the land are visible on satellite photos. The work is dangerous and produces a fifth of Peru's overall annual yield of roughly 175 metric tons of gold that make this country the world's Number 5 producer. The mining also is almost entirely illegal. The situation in the south eastern state of Madre de Dios, which borders Brazil and Bolivia, is mirrored in dozens of the countries where gold is similarly mined, and where the desperately poor often end up working for the most unsavory of opportunists. Government controls are mostly futile. Neighbouring Colombia and Ecuador have mounted crackdowns in the past year, Ecuador's military last month dynamited 67 pieces of heavy equipment, but when authorities depart, the diggers troop back and work resumes. In Madre de Dios, the informal production is unrecorded, untaxed and carried out on public lands where claims are awarded by regional officials, many of them grown rich in the process. As the industry has grown, heavy machinery has moved in bearing Caterpillar, Volvo and other international trademarks into a state the size of Portugal, whose remotest reaches are believed inhabited by uncontacted Indian tribes. In February the Peruvian navy dynamited 13 dredges which, working in violation of a government ban, were choking the Madre de Dios river with silt, killing plants and destroying habitats. The state prides itself on its biodiversity and attracts eco-tourists for its monkeys, macaws and anacondas. There are an estimated 15 uncontacted tribes living in the Peruvian Amazon, all face catastrophe unless their land is protected Survival has been calling on the Peruvian government to protect land inhabited by uncontacted tribes since the 1970s. Today, five reserves have been created for uncontacted tribes, and Peru has ratified laws that uphold the tribes’ right to be left alone. But now the threats are greater than ever. Illegal loggers and miners are invading the forest, and oil and gas concessions cut across more than 70% of Peru’s Amazon region. We’re campaigning to ensure the government upholds uncontacted tribes’ right to their land and prevents outsiders from invading it.

Nigerian govt approves “Green Alternative” policy towards diversified economy
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the implementation of the “Green Alternative’’, a road map towards diversifying Nigeria’s economy. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Audu Ogbeh, made this known on Wednesday in Abuja while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the Council’s meeting, which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari. Ogbeh stated that the policy objective of the document, which has a four-year implementation period (2016 to 2020), is to make agriculture the biggest alternative to oil and gas business in the bid to diversify the economy. “We have just concluded a (Federal Executive) Council meeting in which two issues were discussed. “One is the roadmap for agricultural operations in the next three years which we presented to council, today. “It outlines our policy and our objectives in trying to see agriculture as the next and biggest alternative in our drive to diversify the economy of this country. “The document is titled, “The Green Alternative’’ and it outlines virtually everything we need to do, every policy we need to undertake to achieve self-sufficiency in agriculture and also to become a major exporter of agricultural products, a situation we occupied many decades ago.’’ He said government was aware of the sufferings of many families caused by food shortage. Ogbeh, however, stated that government is working hard to reverse the situation through the implementation of various agricultural programmes. “We are working hard on the staples to satisfy local production and we are fully aware that there is a major concern in the country for food self-sufficiency and that there is crisis in many families as a result of serious shortage of food. “But we are working hard ‎and thank God that ours has not become as bad as one South American country, which was also a major oil producing country, by that I mean Venezuela which situation is definitely a 100 times worst than ours. “But the point is that where we are going -we believe that in a short while, (another year and half in the maximum) we should be reasonably self-sufficient in grains like rice, maize (and) beans. “We may not achieve everything in wheat but we will be very close to our targets. “Other things are also there in the roadmap, it’s quite a voluminous document but that is briefly what the council endorsed this afternoon.’’ On the proposed grazing reserves, the minister stated that the money for the programme budgeted in the 2016 fiscal year would be used to check the clashes between herdsmen and farmers across the country In her own contribution, the Minister of Women Affairs Sen.Aisha Alhassan said that FEC also approved the handing over of two federal roads in Kaduna state to the state government. According to Alhassan, the council has also approved the completion of the eastern by-pass project linking Kaduna state and other North Central states to the North-West. “Council also considered the memo presented by Minister of Power, Works, Housing and Urban Development, for the re-designation of two roads in Kaduna State from being federal roads to state roads. “There was a request by the Kaduna State governor (Nasir) el-Rufa’i to His Excellency, Mr President to have the two roads mentioned, the Nnamdi Azkiwe Express Way, that is `the Kaduna by-pass’ as it is popularly called, and then the popular Ahmadu Bello Way, which runs across inside Kaduna town. “They are presently federal roads but he requested that they should be re-designated as state roads so that they will have the power to work on the road to make them better for Kaduna State indigenes.’’ She called on other state governments to emulate Kaduna state government by taking over dilapidated federal roads within their respective domains. Forces of the British Middle East Command, including units from the United Kingdom and the colonies of British East Africa, British Somaliland, British West Africa, the Indian Empire, Northern Rhodesia, Nyasaland, Mandatory Palestine, South Africa, Southern Rhodesia and Sudan participated in the campaign. Ethiopian irregulars, the Free French and the Belgian Force Publique also participated. The AOI was defended by Italian forces of the Comando Forze Armate dell'Africa Orientale Italiana (Italian East African Armed Forces Command), with units from the Regio Esercito (Italian army), Regia Aeronautica (air force) and Regia Marina (navy), about 200,000 Regio Corpo Truppe Coloniali from Italian-occupied Abyssinia (Ethiopia), Italian Eritrea and Italian Somaliland, led by Italian officers and NCOs, 70,000 Italian regulars and reservists. The Compagnia Autocarrata Tedesca (German Motorised Company) fought under Italian command. Hostilities began on 13 June 1940, with an Italian air raid on the base of 1 Squadron Southern Rhodesian Air Force (237 (Rhodesia) Squadron RAF) at Wajir in the East Africa Protectorate (Kenya) and continued until Italian forces had been pushed back from Kenya and Sudan, through Somaliland, Eritrea and Ethiopia in 1940 and early 1941. The remnants of the Italian forces in the AOI surrendered after the Battle of Gondar in November 1941, except for small groups that fought a guerrilla war in Ethiopia against the British until the Armistice of Cassibile (3 September 1943) ended hostilities between Italy and the Allies. The East African Campaign was the first Allied strategic victory in the war but was overshadowed by the British defeats in the Battle of Greece and the Battle of Crete.

Biafra represented nationalist aspirations of the Igbo people, whose leadership felt they could no longer coexist with the Northern-dominated federal government. The conflict resulted from political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions which preceded Britain's formal decolonization of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963. Immediate causes of the war in 1966 included a military coup, a counter-coup and persecution of Igbo living in Northern Nigeria. Control over the lucrative oil production in the Niger Delta played a vital strategic role. Within a year, the Federal Government troops surrounded Biafra, capturing coastal oil facilities and the city of Port Harcourt. The blockade imposed during the ensuing stalemate led to severe famine. During the two and half years of the war, there were about 100,000 overall military casualties, while between 500,000 and 2 million Biafran civilians died of starvation. In mid-1968, images of malnourished and starving Biafran children saturated the mass media of Western countries. The plight of the starving Biafrans became a cause célèbre in foreign countries, enabling a significant rise in the funding and prominence of international non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Britain and the Soviet Union were the main supporters of the Nigerian government in Lagos, while France, Israel and some other countries supported Biafra. France and Israel provided weapons to both combatants.

China Aid to Africa? Resources or Friendship?
Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews CCP's (Chinese Communist Party) State Council published a white book on China's foreign aid, showing that in the past 60 years China provided RMB256 billion in foreign aid. Half of China aid went to Africa. Overall, most went to developing countries. The white book stresses that China's aid has no political conditions, but respects equality. China's investment in Africa in infrastructure and energy has led to criticisms, however. In a VOA report, Gedion Gamora, Ethiopia advisor at the United Nations, said China's projects do not offer sufficient technology transfer and lack transparency. This may encourage corruption, a problem that is already serious in Africa. Ghana was among the first African countries to have diplomatic relations with China. This April, China offered USD1.8 billiion loan to Ghana. Some Ghanaian senators question the loan plan and its transparency. Ghanaian media said the loan is for road building, but it will tie up Ghana's oil revenue for 15 years. The loan requires Ghana's National Petroleum Corporation to surrender its concession rights, to provide survey maps, seismic data and other sensitive information on oil development and production. A senator said this is like giving up sovereignty. Some African groups said China's investment in raw resources keeps Africa at the bottom of economic chain, deterring its capacity raising for value-added products. Resources control is a new form of colonization. Fu Ziying, Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce, said China's investment in Africa is not limited to resource, and China is not grabbing resources. Investigations show most of China investments in Africa to be in natural recourses. Africa Development bank shows that 70% of African export to Asia is petroleum, mostly from Angola and Sudan. Mineral resources account for 15%. The Times reports on a new research, predicting China's investment in Africa will increase rapidly, reaching USD400 billion in five years. A Reuters article said China has been aiding countries with poor human rights records, such as Myanmar, Sudan, Iran, and North Korea. This makes it difficult for global communities to sanction these countries. NTD reporters Li Ting and Zhu Di 《神韵》2011世界巡演新亮点 http://www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org/

Petroleum industry in Nigeria
The petroleum industry in Nigeria, Africa is the largest industry and main generator of GDP in the continent's most populous nation. In February 2013, the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) claimed that the oil sector of the country “is killing the economy”. NACCIMA's Director General Dr John Isemede said the oil sector is affecting businesses in the country negatively by failing to add real value to them. He said the oil sector has caused substantial decline in agricultural exports, which began in the mid-1960s and continued to date. This video is targeted to blind users. Moratorium in DRC at risk
For 15 years, a moratorium on new industrial logging concessions in the Democratic Republic of Congo helped to protect the Congo Basin forest. But the Congolese government repeatedly violated it and now CAFI, a Norwegian-led fund, is considering lifting the moratorium and expanding industrial logging. This would put the habitat of threatened species at risk as well as the chance for forest communities to manage their livelihood. #KeeptheMoratorium ACT: act.gp/2rdcSFY
Germany stumbles as eurozone PMI hits three-year low
http://www.euronews.com/ A key indicator of the health of the eurozone's economies, the composite purchasing manager's index, has tumbled to its lowest level in three years, at 45.7. It is the ninth consecutive month below 50, the watershed between growth and contraction. Weakness was spread across all the major eurozone economies, with the rate of decline in Germany quickening. Surveyor Markit said it corresponded to a quarterly 0.5% economic contraction for the entire eurozone. Beyond the trio of Greece, Portugal and Ireland, soon to be joined, probably, by Spain, the Italian economy is faltering, France looks fragile and the signs are Germany may even be heading for contraction in Q4. Annual growth there has been trimmed to just one percent, and the economy may already be in recession as export orders dry up. As Germany bucked the worst of the financial crisis posting strong growth from 2009-2011 it was able to support the entire eurozone. That crutch now appears to be slipping away. Eighth Annual Emerging Markets Forum Business Powering Africa Forward
Presented by the Center for Global Business, sponsored in-part by CIBER, a title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education, at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland The Smith School's Center for Global Business convenes its 8th Annual Emerging Markets Forum on the theme of doing business in Africa. Since 2010, this conference series has examined the rise of new economic powers, increased awareness about emerging markets, and disseminated information about how U.S. companies can best succeed there. One of the fastest growing economies in the world, Africa has many countries that have made diversification a priority. Opportunities abound for businesses that understand that trade, not aid, is the road to future prosperity. Expert speakers from business, academia and policy will discuss the opportunities as well as challenges of doing business in Africa, including: ● Which countries are reforming and growing fastest? ● Which sectors are the most promising (now and in the future)? ● What opportunities have drawn U.S. businesses to Africa? ● What challenges do they face, and how have they overcome these challenges?

Turning landscape approaches into action, GLF 2016 Marrakesh
Watch this Discussion Forum from the 2016 Global Landscapes Forum: Climate Action for Sustainable Development in Marrakesh, Morocco, alongside UNFCCC COP22. The session identifies the current impediments to implementing landscape approaches and begin to develop the solutions for overcoming these impediments. Panelists from a spectrum of backgrounds from research and policy are joined by those in attendance in attempting to move beyond normative suggestions of “we need to implement, we need more investment, we need to better integrate policy and practice”. Rather, we focus on how we can better align the theory of landscape approaches with the reality of applying the approach on the ground, i.e. using examples of integrated landscape approaches to discuss how we can implement, how we should monitor progress and how we can better incentivize the multiple sectors operating within rural landscapes to formulate more holistic solutions to sustainably managing land and achieving globally conceived commitments. Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling "Bravo!" in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.) Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality. Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely. And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
