Xanadu Mines developing Kharmagtai 'as a standout project globally'

04:57
Xanadu Mines Ltd (ASX:XAM) managing director Dr Andrew Stewart updates Proactive Investors on the company’s flagship Kharmagtai copper-gold porphyry project, located in the South Gobi region of Mongolia. "We have a dual strategy at the moment with our drilling on the ground. In our current resources at Stockwork Hill, White Hill and Copper Hill, infill and extensional drilling will provide a new resource upgrade there before the end of the year. We need to balance how much of the drilling at Zaraa can get into that, it's still very early stages at Zaraa, but the idea was certainly to be able to pull together an exploration target at that new discovery shortly," says Stewart. Xanadu recently raised $10 million in a share placement.

Bannerman Resources' managing director shares expert insights on uranium market

10:04
Bannerman Resources Ltd (ASX:BMN; NSX:BMN) managing director Brandon Munro speaks to Proactive Investors about the company's Etango Uranium Project in Namibia, and also provides insights on the wider uranium market. The company completed a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) on the Etango Project in 2012, which it is currently in the process of updating. Several de-risking and optimisation initiatives have been completed in the meantime. "It will be a top-10 producing mine in the world once it's up and running, and its also very simple. Technically it's very simple, it's an open pit, low stripping ratio project, it enjoys all of the efficiencies of being a very large bulk mining operation. And we're quite unique in that we can process our ores through a low cost heap leaching operation.... arguably we're the most developed project in the world that isn't already in construction,” says Munro. Earlier this month, Bannerman Resources raised $8 million in a heavily oversubscribed placement at 4.6 cents. Munro explains, "in undertaking the raise we really had two objectives. One was to try and improve the quality of our register, try and ascertain if there was institutional interest out there, and if so try and build our register with that, and we certainly achieved that and we're extremely happy with how that went. But secondly, with $8 million, because of all the advanced study work that we've done over the years on our project, what that means is we're now fully funded all the way to an investment decision." Speaking about the global uranium market in general, Munro says, “it’s a very interesting position that we’re in in the market. Yes, the spot price has ticked up a little, but I would still describe it as being in a situation of inertia. The spot price certainly hasn’t responded to the market fundamentals that we’re seeing unfolding… We’re moving from surplus into deficit, and that inflection point in itself is very insignificant for a commodity, but when you start to look at what’s coming literally around the corner, developments that are happening in days and weeks at the moment, you start to realise that not only are we inflecting from surplus to deficit, we’re moving into a very deep deficit over the next few years… From a prospective producer who is very well advanced, who has an excellent technical basis to their project, that optionality is boosted enormously by the volatility that we would expect from this pricing inertia.”

A strong global economy and dwindling supply pushing zinc price higher

10:33
Mining Capital's Alastair Ford says zinc, the metal used to make steel, is soaring in price due to the global economy marching forward and a strong demand for all sorts of metals. Ford says because zinc supplies have dwindled, the prices have increased to the highest level in more than 10 years. Ford says he imagines the price of zinc will increase even higher, but he doesn't believe prices will double -- likely price increases will come in a more incremental and steady fashion because of the environment of stocks being low, and demand for zinc running pretty strong.
Australian Vanadium’s baseline PFS indicates potential to become low-cost vanadium producer

07:40
Australian Vanadium Ltd (ASX:AVL) managing director Vincent Algar updates Proactive Investors on the battery metals company’s development of its Gabanintha Vanadium Project in Western Australia. A baseline pre-feasibility study has been completed for the project and estimates a net present value (NPV) range for the project that has a top end of US$2.37 billion when assuming a vanadium price of US$20 per pound. This base case demonstrates robust project fundamentals featuring competitive product costs and financials and will allow AVL to move quickly into piloting and definitive feasibility study (DFS) upon completion. “Once you start mining in this area you then have an opportunity to either go deeper or go along strike and one thing AVL has got is a lot of strike length to work with, all of which is currently inferred resources,” Algar says.

Cobalt discovery gives Lithium Australia 'another string to our bow'

04:32
Lithium Australia NL (ASX:LIT) managing director Adrian Griffin speaks to Proactive Investors about the integrated battery metal producer’s recent surprise discovery of cobalt at the Eichigt project, near its flagship resource at Sadisdorf in Saxony, Germany. “The style of mineralisation is quite interesting in that copper, cobalt, manganese and lithium doesn't occur together in many mineral occurrences… we are of course on the doorstep of the EV industry in Europe, and that EV industry will have a requirement for a lot of cobalt over the next few decades, I would imagine, and beyond. So this gives us a very good exploration target to service those markets,” says Griffin.

Rising demand for graphite in electric vehicle batteries propels Lomiko Metals exploration

03:53
Lomiko Metals Inc. (TSX.V:LMR) is a Canada-based, exploration-stage company. The company is engaged in the acquisition, exploration and development of resource properties that contain minerals for the new green economy. Its mineral properties include the La Loutre, Lac Des Iles, Quatre Milles Graphite Properties and the Vines Lake property which all have had major mineral discoveries. In this interview, Paul Gill, CEO of Lomiko Metals, speaks with Hannah Bernard about the company’s focus on the green economy, particularly the electric vehicle market. He discusses how flake graphite is an essential component of the batteries needed in the production of electric vehicles. China’s reduced production of flake graphite as well as graphite in general, has prompted a spike in the price of these metals, but with numerous companies and countries going all-in on electric vehicles in the coming decades, Paul sees a huge market for lithium and graphite. Assuring investors, Paul remarks that the company is at a good point in development. The La Loutre property has over 100 holes with further drilling campaigns in the works. Lithium Australia (ASX:LIT) Leveraging the Lithium Production Cycle

03:13
Lithium Australia (ASX:LIT) is perhaps best known for its SiLeach(R) hydrometallurgical technology. SiLeach(R) is an alternative to the more common method of converting lithium concentrate to a lithium carbonate via processes that involve energy-intensive roasting. While SiLeach(R) remains the cornerstone of Lithium Australia's business strategy (first lithium carbonate production from the pilot plant is expected by 2020), the company recently expanded its business model to embrace other aspects of the lithium production cycle. This involves the following. Sadisdorf lithium project - located in Germany, the project is being advanced towards a scoping study (4Q18). The plan is to process hard-rock lithium ore from Sadisdorf into a lithium carbonate concentrate using SiLeach(R). VSPC Ltd - a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lithium Australia, VSPC uses proprietary nanotechnology to convert lithium carbonate into a more valuable product: lithium cathode material. RCARC Ltd - having identified an escalating need for more, and better, recycling of lithium-ion batteries, Lithium Australia subsidiary RCARC aims to recover not only lithium but also other valuable energy metals (including copper, nickel and, most notably, cobalt) from such batteries at the end of their useful life. Analyst comments: Demand for lithium and other energy metals is now well documented and shows no signs of slowing down. Much of that demand relates to the manufacture of electric vehicles, as well the need for storage of renewable energy, both of which are burgeoning in light of somewhat aggressive government emission targets globally. At present, investors' exposure to the lithium sector relates mostly to mining ventures that aim, ultimately, to produce and market lithium concentrate. Currently that product sells for between US$500 and US$800 a tonne. Lithium Australia is taking a different approach: controlling the lithium production cycle right from the mine site (Sadisdorf), through production of lithium concentrate (SiLeach(R)) to, finally, the production and sale of more valuable cathode materials (VSPC) direct to battery manufacturers. Overall, this strategy reduces Lithium Australia's risk profile, since it need not rely on the success of its SiLeach(R) technology alone. Nor need it rely on third-party agreements for source material, which further enhances its autonomy.

Miners are digging themselves and the ASX out of hole as prices surge

11:35
While large chunks of the Australian economy are still struggling for momentum, the miners have crawled off the mat and are enjoying something of a surprise mini-boom.The ASX's metals and mining index jumped again last week and is now at its highest point in more than three years.Since the start of the year, the broad measure of mining stocks is up 15 per cent, leaving the ASX200's 5 per cent gain in the dust. The fortunes of the miners and drillers, large and small, are being driven by a spurt in prices across the periodic table. That in turn has underwritten the 5 per cent rise in the ASX over the past month.Among the bulks, spot prices for iron ore rose 0.7 per cent on Friday, its third-straight day of gains. Coking coal put on 1.7 per cent.Zinc has just hit a 10-year high, aluminium has matched its five-year high, while copper prices are up 25 per cent so far this year. The more obscure atomic numbers have enjoyed healthy buying as well. From ruthenium — a rare transition metal grouped with platinum and used OLED TV monitors — through to lithium, a favourite of eclectic vehicle speculators, prices have been on the tear.Wary traders who have been burnt before question just how much more prices can rise. The fundamentals say speculation is perhaps running ahead of actual demand for many metals, but for the time being the party is continuing. The recent bounce in steel-making ingredients is particularly surprising given the well ventilated production cuts demanded by Chinese authorities ahead of winter's smog-saturated "heating season"."Mills haven't started production cuts as much as what we expected earlier, so some traders expected coking coal spot prices won't fall too much," one commodity trader in Shanghai told the Reuters news agency. It appears steel margins are just too juicy at the moment for many factories to cut production. From the organic chemistry side of the divide, oil is bubbling up too, lifting the fortunes of the energy companies. The global benchmark Brent crude rose more than 2 per cent on Friday and is up almost 40 per cent since its recent low back in June.US crude hit a two-year high as the drill-rig count experienced its biggest decline in 18 months.Hedge funds are eyeing an acceleration in Chinese demand and the increasing likelihood Venezuela's state-owned energy company PDVSA will collapse under a mountain of debt as reasons to buy oil futures.Perhaps the strongest signal the market is coming back into balance is the physical price of oil is rising as well.Saudi Arabia's oil giant Aramco jacked up its official selling price for the third consecutive month, a fairly clear signal the glut is starting to drain. The solid momentum that saw Australian shares rise 1 per cent last week looks likely to continue when the markets open. The key US indices posted record highs, with S&P500 and Dow Jones gaining ground for the eighth consecutive week.Interestingly, while the All Ordinaries has now finally pushed back through the 6,000-point level, it is still a long way shy of its record of almost 6,900 recorded on November 1, 2007, just before the GFC swoon.Wall Street first hit its pre-GFC high four years ago and fresh records have become an almost daily occurrence.Unlike a certain horse race on Tuesday, the result of the Reserve Bank's rate-setting meeting is a foregone conclusion — nothing will happen. The market says there no chance of a change. Those odds are supported by 27 out of 27 economists who have bet on a hold for the 13th straight meeting. However, the RBA's quarterly Statement on Monetary Policy — a document which details the central bank's current thinking on the economy and frames its key forecasts — is likely to be a far more interesting read. The RBA has maintained a relentlessly rosy view of the economy, even as it cut its way to the current record-low cash rate of 1.5 per cent.UBS economist George Tharenou believes the RBA is about to slash its key forecasts for GDP growth and inflation in Friday's SoMP by a hefty 50 basis points, despite a moderate acceleration in growth in the second quarter."We see the RBA lowering their numbers because their previous forecasts just had too much of an expected pick-up to 3.25 per cent [year-on-year] for end of 2018 and 3.5 per cent for mid-19," Mr Tharenou wrote over the weekend. The UBS house view is a cumulative 50 basis points will be lopped of the RBA's inflation forecast as well. There are a few drivers behind UBS's thinking. Slower GDP growth, the base
