Australia's biodiversity: mining

06:13
Mining occurs throughout Australia, but its direct impacts on biodiversity are relatively limited compared with other major land uses because the areas affected are generally small. Dr Alan Andersen talks about the main impacts of mining on biodiversity and how these can be appropriately managed through processes like strategic regional assessments, use of bioindicators in rehabilitation, and biodiversity offsets. When you’re debating quality vs quantity, the answer is always both. But that being said... It’s super important that you go about building your audience with the right intent. One of the best exercises for you to do is make a list of companies or businesses that you go back to over and over and over again, and ask yourself why. On the left, list five companies you return to again and again, and on the right write the reason for doing so. For instance, on the left write, "I go to this restaurant at least once a week" and on the right write, "I go there because _____________." The thing that goes into the blank is generally one of these six reasons. They will give you a lot of clues for your own business. #1: Fast - 0:38 #2: Quality - 0:49 #3: Cheap - 0:57 #4: Luxury - 1:10 #5: User Friendly - 1:23 #6: Customer Service - 1:38 Subscribe to the channel: http://www.youtube.com/valuetainment?... What major events have impacted the ASX this year?

09:13
At Skaffold’s September webinar Greg Canavan, author of Crisis and Opportunity and managing editor of The Daily Reckoning, together with Skaffold’s General Manager Chris Batchelor CFA, shared their insights on the events that have caused turmoil in the markets this year. Iron Ore: Not only has the price of iron ore fallen considerably this year, China has also reduced its steel consumption. This is bad news for Australia’s miners, who in the face of a contracting market continued to increase their production. Businesses servicing the big miners have also been hit, resulting in significant collateral damage. Oil prices: The price of oil has halved, causing the profits of the big oil producers to fall significantly. Like the mining sector, businesses that service big oil companies have been hit too. On the other end of the spectrum, when oil does fall, businesses that use it as an input are happier customers. Greece: Whilst the turmoil is devastating for the Greeks, the reality is that what’s going on in Greece doesn’t have a direct impact on the ASX. The impact of the volatility, however, is the creation of fear. Fear causes otherwise rational investors to sell down good quality stocks. For investors with the stomach to handle volatility, times of volatility present mouth-watering opportunities to pick up top stocks at great prices. The Chinese stock market: Whilst the Chinese stock market is an entity unto itself, it does have a flow on effect to Australia. China drove Australia’s commodity boom, and when growth started to slow in 2011, so did Australia’s exports. The resource boom was followed by a property boom, which ultimately burst. The government then poured stimulus into the Chinese stock market, which burst too. In the context of how China impacts Australia, when its economy slows, Australia’s exports are impacted. Rising US interest rates: Greg Canavan says Australia shouldn’t be too concerned about US interest rates. Whilst market will adjust to this news, company fundamentals will not be impacted. How to find top growth stocks was recorded on 17 September 2015 at skaffold.com. ABOUT SKAFFOLD Skaffold tracks and reports on all ASX listed companies, plus thousands of global stocks daily. Forget market jargon and pages of financial data. Skaffold's digital stock research gives you the facts you need so you can easily find the best growth and yield stocks for your portfolio. The stock rating system is like traffic lights for the stock market. With Skaffold doing the hard work for you, you'll have the confidence to make investment decisions without spending hours sifting through confusing financial data. It's the ideal tool for stock market investors, self managed superfund trustees and skilled financial advisors.
RES Equipment

03:28
Working in the cyclical boom-and-bust resource industry of Northern Ontario means making the most of your opportunities. Dryden's Bob Ray and RES Equipment Sales have done just that in building a rapport with mining industry players across Canada and internationally. The 14-employee Dryden mining supplier is considered a cornerstone company of an emerging supply and service centre in northwestern Ontario. RES Equipment is a provider of new and used mining equipment, parts and service to major mining players on just about every continent. When Ray started the company 15 years ago, his forte was his ability to find hard-to-get pieces of specialty equipment for customers in the forestry and mining industry. Those early days of hustling, stockpiling parts, and providing reliable service have translated into a substantial customer base and repeat business. With the mining industry starting to rebound and dozens of mineral exploration projects occurring within a 100-kilometre radius of Dryden, companies from all over now come looking to RES Equipment. The business certainly has maximum exposure with its main office and warehouse located right on the Trans-Canada Highway. "Anybody that crosses from one end of Canada to the other has to go by my door," said Ray, the company's president. Dealing with challenge and adversity is a fact of life in the mining industry and his company. The 2008 global economic crash meant sluggish annual sales of $3.8 million, which improved slightly to more than $4.5 million last year. "We had 18 months where we never sold any major pieces of equipment," said Ray, yet the company kept refurbishing and showcasing their supply of used scoop trams, underground personnel carriers and rockbreakers. The company has diversified with local contracts for snowplowing, landscaping, roadbuilding, aggregate hauling and equipment rentals of skid steer loaders, excavators, trucks, trailers and service vehicles. They also supply drill core storage racks for exploration companies. "This year has been the biggest year for us" by doing repairs on bulldozers, skidders and the muskeg tractors that haul diamond drill rigs to remote sites, said Ray. "Our shop has been full for half the summer with exploration equipment. We're kind of basking in this new-found opportunity. I have a history of taking opportunity as it comes and running with it." As a Class A mechanic and technical service representative for other national equipment suppliers, Ray has known mining for 30 years. His first entrepreneurial attempt to break into the extremely competitive and tight-knit Sudbury mine service market in the early 1990s was a tough nut to crack. So he pulled up stakes and went back home to Dryden. What began as a one-man, garage-based business would eventually expand into a welding and fabrication shop, and expand again into a large warehouse and office space. Ray also began landing the Canadian distribution rights to various equipment makers of pneumatic drills, hydraulic rockbreakers, hoses, fittings and adapters. Once he began travelling and making sales calls beyond Sudbury, it was much easier to get his foot in the door. No one local was servicing the mining industry in northwestern Ontario, and with the Red Lake gold mining camp only a two-hour drive away, Dryden was as good as anywhere to be his headquarters. Through the web, "we can really service the entire world. We found that our location is not a deterrent at all." About 50 per cent of their sales -- mostly refurbished equipment -- is shipped out internationally to Russia, Africa, Australia, Europe and South America. Though the Internet plays a big part in their sales, it's mainly culled from their hefty database of industry contacts. They search North American mine sites for used equipment, then haul them back to the Dryden shop to rebuild. New and rebuilt jumbo drillers, rock drills, scoops and utility carriers are shipped to clients such as Goldcorp, HudBay Mining and Smelting, Renda Pacific, Stillwater Mining and various U.S. equipment brokers. Ray hasn't completely turned his back on Sudbury. He maintains a parts and service office in the Nickel City and counts Vale as one of his biggest customers. "We've shown 15 years of growth and we anticipate more as we expand beyond equipment sales and into contracting. My hope is that the exploration projects that are close to Dryden will really enhance our opportunities here to become solidly entrenched as a major supplier to our area."

What Are The Top 5 Tips For Starting A Trucking Company?

04:26
Hello again, Mike Lawrence here from InsureMyRig.com, the premier trucking insurance agent on the web. InsureMyRig.com is your best source for trucking insurance information, fast quotes, and great customer service. Today, I'm going to give you my Top 5 Tips for starting a trucking company! With the nation's economy in full-blown recovery, there are opportunities for smart businesspeople to start their own company, and drive towards the American dream. Startup businesses have a high failure rate, and trucking companies run on thin profit margins. Hopefully, my tips can help you to not become one of those statistics; so, let's go take a look at our list. Tip #1 Start with one or more core customers In the bar/restaurant business, it's said that your regulars are the ones who keep the lights on; they are the ones you count on to pay the bills, and you need to treat them like gold. Core customers, who can promise regular loads and prompt payment are a huge asset; relying on brokers or internet load boards takes up much of your management time chasing loads and money. Use those broker loads to fill in the gaps...but depend on, and work hard to cultivate good core customers. Tip #2 Have 90-120 days operating capital on hand before starting Trucking is not an inexpensive business to start. Truck payments, registrations, insurance and definitely fuel will drain your bank account even faster than my wife can drain mine! Even in a best-case scenario, you will not get paid for hauling a load within 60 days of doing the work; most shippers and brokers pay anywhere from 90-120 days after, and during those days, your wheels still need to be turning. One of the biggest reasons for new venture failure is a lack of good financial planning, so protect yourself from that pitfall and you'll increase your likelihood of long-term business success. Tip #3 Improve your credit rating Speaking of good financial planning...do you know what your credit score is? There are many internet sites where you can get a credit report, such as freecreditscore.com; make sure you check your report for accuracy prior to startup and dispute any discrepancies. Truck dealers, insurance underwriters, and banks will all use your credit score to determine lending and premium rates. A good credit score will make a huge difference in your business's bottom line; and generating profit is a bussiness's primary goal. Get good credit, and keep it good by paying your bills on time, every time. Tip #4 Start Small An entrepreneur, by definition, is a risk-taker; someone who wants control over their future. A smart entrepreneur knows not to take on TOO much...too much risk, too much debt, and too much work! Trust me, as your own driver, manager, bookkeeper and salesman, you will have plenty of tasks to keep you busy in your first 12 months. My advice would be to concentrate on all of those; and not worry yet about hiring new drivers until you've got a very tight understanding and control of your other duties. Besides, no one else is going to take care of your business and your customers as well as you can. Start small, and grow carefully. Tip #5 Pick 3 professional advisers All businesses need outside professional advice; and trucking is a very specialized business. Make sure that your accountant, lawyer and insurance agent all are experienced in handling trucking accounts; this is a bad time to pick your brother-in-law to be your business attorney! All of the outside advisers that you use should be able to provide references of other satisfied trucking clients. Our family-owned insurance agency, for example, has been serving the truck industry for 80 years, and we are members of local, state and national trucking associations. We can provide you with competitive quotes from A-rated insurance carriers, and help to make sure you stay compliant with government regulations. We're the best! That's it for this time around. I hope you find this information helpful; if you have further questions or comments feel free to email me at [email protected] Drive safely out there!

In this interview from the Sprott Natural Resource Symposium, Sam Broom, an investment executive with Sprott Global Resource Investments Ltd., shares regarding his outlook for the resource sector for the second half of 2018. Sam believes mining investors need to have their “eyes wide open” looking for value opportunities in quality companies that have sold off due to the recent commodity price drops. Even though many resource investors are despondent, Sam believes that we could be at or near the bottom of this current sell-off. 0:05 Introduction of topic and guest 1:13 Thoughts on this year’s Sprott Conference 2:06 What Sam is picking up on in regards to investor sentiment right now 3:19 Thoughts on current M&A action in the mining sector 5:20 Sam’s updated thoughts on his 2018 top resource sector opportunities 10:41 Where Sam is currently seeing the best resource value opportunities 12:06 Sam explains his new ASX-focused managed platform 13:11 Outlook for second half of 2018 14:30 Sam’s contact info Sam joined Sprott Global in early 2016 having spent his early career working as an engineering geologist in the consulting industry, both in his native New Zealand and in Australia. During his time in Australia, Sam became heavily involved in the mining industry and gained extensive experience across a wide range of industry sub-sectors. It was during his time in the Australian mining industry that he gained a passion for both the natural resources industries and the markets that support them. Now, he leverages his practical, firsthand knowledge of how these industries operate with his geological expertise and analytical skills honed through years working in the engineer sector, to find the best investment opportunities around the globe. Sam also has a keen interest in charting and other forms of technical analysis, a discipline he believes is particularly useful when dealing with highly volatile junior mining stocks that are afflicted by extreme and rapid changes in sentiment. His investment philosophy focuses on combining a sound understanding of industry and company specific fundamentals with technical analysis to fine tune the timing of investment decisions in order to maximize portfolio returns. REMSAFE Remote Isolation System

02:07
REMSAFE is a safety-related remote isolation system. It isolates mining equipment from all source of energy at the equipment, remotely from its substation. WA's major mining companies are buying REMSA FE systems because: • REMSAFE isolates equipment in three minutes instead of forty or more. It simply eliminates time waiting for an electrician to operate isolators in substations; • Production time saved is revenue gained. A high volume conveyor on a mine can lose thousands of dollars for every minute it is unexpectedly out of service. REMSA FE systems have paid for themselves and started generating profits, within a month of commissioning; • REMSAFE is engineered for simplicity. The machine operator has just one switch and two buttons to operate, nothing more. Operator training takes five minutes. The field isolation station guides the operator with indicator lamps and a video screen. The system communicates with the Control Room and site data capture systems; • REMSAFE is a safety system. REMSA FE meets or exceeds the Australian and International Standards for machine safety, programmable safety systems, mining machinery and for conveyors. OCR Basics: "Reading and Sorting Mail Automatically" 1970 US Postal Service

USPS, Mail, Post Office, Stamps... playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_hX5wLdhf_IE6wB_qlBB_sLmUryf-4yJ more at http://quickfound.net "This 1970 film demonstrates the U.S. Postal Service's Optical Character Recognition (OCR) machines, which allow mail to be sorted automatically." Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_character_recognition Optical character recognition (optical character reader) (OCR) is the mechanical or electronic conversion of images of typed, handwritten or printed text into machine-encoded text. It is widely used as a form of data entry from printed paper data records, whether passport documents, invoices, bank statements, computerised receipts, business cards, mail, printouts of static-data, or any suitable documentation. It is a common method of digitising printed texts so that it can be electronically edited, searched, stored more compactly, displayed on-line, and used in machine processes such as machine translation, text-to-speech, key data and text mining. OCR is a field of research in pattern recognition, artificial intelligence and computer vision. Early versions needed to be trained with images of each character, and worked on one font at a time. Advanced systems capable of producing a high degree of recognition accuracy for most fonts are now common. Some systems are capable of reproducing formatted output that closely approximates the original page including images, columns, and other non-textual components... History Early optical character recognition may be traced to technologies involving telegraphy and creating reading devices for the blind. In 1914, Emanuel Goldberg developed a machine that read characters and converted them into standard telegraph code.[citation needed] Concurrently, Edmund Fournier d'Albe developed the Optophone, a handheld scanner that when moved across a printed page, produced tones that corresponded to specific letters or characters. In the late 1920s and into the 1930s Emanuel Goldberg developed what he called a "Statistical Machine" for searching microfilm archives using an optical code recognition system. In 1931 he was granted USA Patent number 1,838,389 for the invention. The patent was acquired by IBM. Blind and visually impaired users In 1974, Ray Kurzweil started the company Kurzweil Computer Products, Inc. and continued development of omni-font OCR, which could recognize text printed in virtually any font (Kurzweil is often credited with inventing omni-font OCR, but it was in use by companies, including CompuScan, in the late 1960s and 1970s). Kurzweil decided that the best application of this technology would be to create a reading machine for the blind, which would allow blind people to have a computer read text to them out loud. This device required the invention of two enabling technologies – the CCD flatbed scanner and the text-to-speech synthesiser. On January 13, 1976, the successful finished product was unveiled during a widely reported news conference headed by Kurzweil and the leaders of the National Federation of the Blind.[citation needed] In 1978, Kurzweil Computer Products began selling a commercial version of the optical character recognition computer program. LexisNexis was one of the first customers, and bought the program to upload legal paper and news documents onto its nascent online databases. Two years later, Kurzweil sold his company to Xerox, which had an interest in further commercialising paper-to-computer text conversion. Xerox eventually spun it off as Scansoft, which merged with Nuance Communications.[citation needed] The research group headed by A. G. Ramakrishnan at the Medical intelligence and language engineering lab, Indian Institute of Science, has developed PrintToBraille tool, an open source GUI frontend[4] that can be used by any OCR to convert scanned images of printed books to Braille books. In the 2000s, OCR was made available online as a service (WebOCR), in a cloud computing environment, and in mobile applications like real-time translation of foreign-language signs on a smartphone...

Australian 4WD Hire Testimonials We rented a Toyota Prado 4WD from Australia 4WD Hire, equipped with camping equipment (tents, stretchers, chairs, table, fridge, water container, stove, recovery kit, first aid kit, light & a roof basket bag). The car was well suited to comfortably seat our family of 2 adults and 3 kids. The booking procedure was very easy, followed by prompt replies to all questions prior to departure – thank you to Maryna and Amber! The team at the Alice Springs office were very friendly and helpful in facilitating a quick handover and drop off the car. We received our deposit back within 24 hours of returning home. All the equipment supplied was fit for purpose. The tents were easy to use and robust, easily weathering a few hectic thunderstorms. We did an online order at the Alice Springs Woolworths and the local butcher, so had a quick stop at the shops to collect and pack these items (the Engel fridge was super handy!!!!! especially to cool the end of the day beer/wine) before heading off on our Central Australia journey. Australian 4WD Hire – your 4WD took us on an amazing family holiday – highly recommended. Thank you. Kind Regards, Angie & David McNeil – Dee Why NSW / Australia We recently hired an Australian 4WD Hilux for a 7-day camping trip from Alice via the Larapinta drive down to Palm Valley, Watarkka National Park, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and back to Alice Spring. Australian 4WD were great to deal with the whole way through, rates were reasonable and there were absolutely no extra fees for driving on 4 wd roads etc. The camping equipment had a bit of wear and tear but that’s fine because you don’t feel like you have to keep it pristine. The Hilux was in great condition and drove really well. I would definitely recommend this company. Thanks to all the very amenable and professional staff. Regards, Melanie Morrison and Max Vechi– Sydney NSW / Australia We drove over 4000km and used hired equipment during the trip from Darwin to Adelaide. Me and my travel mates are extremely satisfied with the vehicle we have got and service we have been provided in. Since the very beginning communication with Australian 4wd team was very easy and precise. We got all details and useful information in advance. The car was well maintained, equipped with high quality camping stuff, much better than expected. Bond/security is being refunded to us with no issues. The vehicle we had was with ground tent and exactly what we needed while our trip thru Australian Outback. Customer service and quality definitely above expectation!!! Highly recommended. Have a good day, Ania Szczecinska – Maroubra NSW / Australia

Australian Market Report of October 12: Watching the US Earnings Results

04:02
Dow index hit a fresh 2009 high on Friday after the earnings season kicked off. Upbeat forecasts on IT giants IBM and Intel fueled the market's growing expectations over a profit recovery. S&P's 500 and Nasdaq both gained more than 4.5 per cent for the week. The Australian market closed slightly lower on Friday as investors remained cautious to the US corporate results. Uncertainty may continue to weigh on the local market as more major US companies are scheduled to release their earnings this week. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index Friday dropped 15.7 points, or 0.33 per cent, to 4752.9. For the week, the ASX200 rose 3.3 per cent. The broader All Ordinaries index lost 8.8 points, or 0.18 per cent, to 4754.5 on Friday. Key Economic Facts and Figures Australia's major banks have tipped that they will increase mortgage rates by more than the official Reserve Bank rises in the coming months because they are facing higher costs of raising money in the wholesale markets. But Treasurer Wayne Swan says the big four banks cannot justify raising interest rates by more than the Reserve Bank of Australia's 25-basis-point increase. Today the Australian Bureau of Statistics will release lending finance data for August. M&A News Felix Resources (ASX:FLX) said China's Yanzhou Coal Mining (SHA:600188) today will resubmit the application for its A$3.54 billion bid for Felix to Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) for a second time. Yanzhou withdrew and resubmitted its application for the first time last month. Mirvac Group (ASX:MGR) has entered into a Merger Implementation Deed with Mirvac Real Estate Investment Trust (ASX:MRZ) in relation to a A$256 million offer to acquire all the issued units in MRZ. Mirvac Group's offer is proposed to be implemented by way of a trust scheme, valuing the trust units at 54 cents. Mirvac currently owns 24.6 per cent of MRZ. Important Corporate News Toll road operator Transurban (ASX:TCL) has posted toll revenue of growth of A$206.9 million for the September quarter, an increase of 6.8 per cent on the prior corresponding quarter. All Australian assets reported traffic growth for the quarter. Toll revenue growth exceeded traffic growth on six out of seven roads. Fortescue Metals Group (ASX:FMG) says its September quarter production exceeded guidance by 9 per cent and reiterated its forecasts for the December quarter. The group also plans to spend A$360 million to fast-track the development of its Christmas Creek mine, which would increase its total annual iron ore production to about 55 million metric tonnes. Lend Lease (ASX:LLC) plans to become a stapled entity on ASX. This will be achieved by distributing units in a newly created trust, Lend Lease Trust to shareholders on a 1:1 basis and stapling each unit and share together to form a stapled security. Office service firm Servcorp Limited (ASX:SRV) plans to sell new shares to institutions and retail investors to raise A$80 million to fund its growth and take advantage of depressed prices for real estate. The company will raise A$51 million from an institutional placement and A$29 million from a one-for-11 accelerated non-renounceable entitlement offer. Seven Network (ASX:SEV) says its holding in James Packer's Consolidated Media Holdings (ASX:CMJ) has risen to 20.96 per cent after an on-market share buyback by ConsMedia reduced the number of shares on issue. Meridian Minerals Limtied (ASX:MII) said the FIRB has approved the investment of A$10.5 million into Meridian by Chinese company Northwest Mining and Geology Group Co. Ltd for Nonferrous Metals (NWME). NWME will subscribe to Meridian shares in a placement at a share price of A$0.08

Projectory Review - August 2014

04:31
All eyes among Projectory subscribers in August were on Adani Mining’s Carmichael Coal and Rail Project, 160km northwest of Clermont in Central Queensland. Projectory reported in early August that suppliers and service providers were urged to register online as soon as possible to avoid missing out on their slice of a $16.5 billion resource project. The project recently secured Federal Government approval, securing the future of more than 10,000 direct jobs and indirect employment opportunities for local suppliers. The project will combine open-cut and underground coal mining methods to produce 60 million tonnes of thermal coal a year for export. It is expected to generate over $500 million annually in direct and indirect benefits to the economy during construction, and almost $3 billion at full export capacity. POSCO E&C of South Korea has secured the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the project. In other developments a preferred contractor was announced in mid-August for a $670m prison in Victoria. A consortium comprising four companies has been selected as preferred contractor to design and construct the prison in Melbourne’s west. The preferred contractor for the Ravenhall Prison project is the GEO Consortium, which includes the GEO Group Australia, John Holland, Honeywell and Capella Capital. Under the terms of the contract, the consortium will design, construct, finance, maintain and operate the prison for 25 years. In Western Australia, a contract was let in August for a major LNG project. Vinçotte secured the contract for integrity control of Chevron's Wheatstone LNG installation. The company will be in charge of checking all the welding joints and steel constructions on-site in the Pilbara. Although Vinçotte is a Belgian firm, local opportunities will be forthcoming from the contract: the company is setting up a team of approximately 25 people in Australia to manage the project over a year and a half period. Well back to Queensland were a Projectory report in August on the first contract awarded for a $1.3b infrastructure project received a lot of attention from subscribers. The first of three contracts was awarded for the $1.3 billion Gateway Upgrade North (GUN) Project - one of the biggest infrastructure projects in southeast Queensland. Fulton Hogan recently secured an earthworks and drainage tender from Queensland Transport and Main Roads for the project. In other developments in August a construction contractor was named for a $3bn Sydney road project. The construction contract for the NorthConnex project, a 9km tolled link from the southern end of the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at its existing Pennant Hills Road interchange, is on public exhibition and is likely to offer significant opportunities for suppliers and service providers. For more information on these projects and plenty more including contact details for key project contacts and information on procurement protocols visit Projectory. Entries are also open for the inaugural Projectory Nova Awards recognising and rewarding outstanding individuals in the industrial supply and service sector involved in developing, maintaining and supporting sales and new business. For full details, visit the Events page on the Projectory website. Tickets are also selling fast for 2nd Annual Projectory-BIS Shrapnel Major Projects Outlook luncheon sponsored by Bid Write at the Novotel Sydney on Darling Harbour in Sydney on Thursday 27 November. KOONGARRA NOW PROTECTED FOREVER FROM URANIUM MINING!

06:28
CANBERRA, Australia, February 7, 2013 (ENS) -- After 34 years of campaigning to keep uranium mining out of his ancestral land of Koongarra, Djok Senior Traditional Owner Jeffrey Lee sat in the House of Representatives Wednesday to watch this land be protected forever. Environment Minister Tony Burke introduced a bill to repeal the Koongarra Project Area Act -- a 1979 law excluding Koongarra from the original boundaries of Kakadu National Park because of its potential to be the site for a uranium mine. Koongarra in Australia's Northern Territory "In 2010, the Government promised Mr. Lee that we would incorporate Koongarra into Kakadu National Park, to ensure that the threat of mining was banished forever," Burke said. Koongarra is an area of native woodland of great environmental and cultural significance, now incorporated within the boundaries of Kakadu National Park. Kakadu is located within the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory of Australia, 171 kilometers southeast of the territorial capital, Darwin. The Koongarra uranium deposit is estimated at about 14,000 tonnes. Mining companies, most recently the French company AREVA, have been trying to mine the deposit for decades despite the opposition of traditional owners. Lee said, "This is a great day for me, my country and my culture. My mind is at peace now that I know that there will be no mining at Koongarra and that Djok lands will be protected forever in Kakadu National Park." "My mothers and grandmothers who taught me about the plants and animals, my uncles and aunties who shared their knowledge, to all the elders and my creation ancestors -- I give my humble respect for standing here today," he said. "I have said no to uranium mining at Koongarra because I believe that the land and my cultural beliefs are more important than mining and money. Money comes and goes, but the land is always here, it always stays if we look after it and it will look after us," he said.
