The U.S. Gypsum mine in Sperry, Iowa, is more than 620 feet underground and accessible only via shaft, which makes getting equipment in the mine a difficult challenge. When it was time for a new Cat® R1600H loader, U.S. Gypsum turned to local Cat dealer Altorfer, a long-time partner of its surface operation. Once the mine decided on the new loader, Altorfer went to work figuring out the right way to disassemble the machine on the surface, send the hundreds of individual pieces down the shaft, and then re-assemble it underground. It took a partnership to ensure a successful project, with Altorfer engineers, Caterpillar engineers and mine personnel working in close collaboration throughout the process. The mine has since purchased an additional R1600H and Altorfer has developed best practices that are being shared with other dealers around the world.

Crossrail will use eight tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to construct the new tunnels under London. These huge machines will work 24 hours a day beneath the streets of London, excavating large volumes of ground and erecting the concrete tunnel lining. Each machine has a rotating cutter head at the front, and a series of trailers behind, housing all the mechanical and electrical equipment required for the excavation of material. To construct the 42km of tunnel required for Crossrail the tunnel boring machines will undertake ten individual tunnel drives to construct the 6.2m diameter rail tunnels. Each TBM weighs approximately 1000 tonnes and will be up to 140m in length with an external diameter of 7.1m. This allows for an inside tunnel diameter of 6.2m once the concrete tunnel segments are in place. Each TBM will be operated by a 'tunnel gang' comprising of around twenty people - twelve people on the TBM itself and eight people working from the rear of the machine to above ground. Rampura Agucha is a zinc and lead mine in the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, India. It has world's largest deposits of zinc and lead. The mine is owned by Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL). Rampura-Agucha deposits were discovered in August, 1977 by T. C. Rampuria, a geologist with the Government of Rajasthan's Directorate of Mines and Geology. Hindustan Zinc Limited started drilling in February, 1980 and a report regarding the estimate of the deposit was submitted in 1981. The development of this mine started in 1988 and the first ore production was in March 1991. Rampura-Agucha has a combination of open pit mine and underground mine Chanderiya smelter complex was built in the Chittorgarh district to refine the zinc-lead ore of this mine. Rampura Agucha is today the world's largest zinc producing mine. Rampura Agucha is located 220 km from Jaipur. It is north of Bhilwara, and northwest of Shahpura. Rampura-Agucha is 17 km southeast of bijainagar on NH 79. SAG Mill - Semi-Autogenous Grinding Mill A semi-autogenous grinding mill, or Sag mill, is responsible for grinding materials from large chunks into small, usable pieces for processing. The Sag mill is usually part of the primary stage in the grinding process. Pieces of raw or fairly reduced materials are ground into smaller pieces for further processing or sorting. These machines are typically electrically powered, but have been modified from a variety of powering systems over the years. Utility of a SAG Mill A Sag mill is most often used in the mining fields, particularly in the mining of precious metals such as gold, copper, silver, and nickel. The sag mill serves in the line of industrial mining equipment designed to process, crush, separate, or locate precious metals from mined coal. And now we start working through exploring the upper levels of this awesome abandoned mine... I mentioned in the first video that this mountain was Swiss-cheesed with natural caverns and you’ll see more and more for the geology fans and the rock heads as we continue to make our way up through the levels. Given the absence of daylight above, we don’t know if that was a winze or a capped shaft toward the end of this video, but those flooded levels show you why we are heading up rather than down. Given how far we moved up into the heart of the mountain from the level where we started in the first video, one would think the water table couldn’t be too far below that first level. However, when we dropped that rock down the winze with the elevator and hoist, it fell for a very long way before impacting something. So, maybe that section isn’t flooded? My knowledge of hydrology is too limited to understand underground rivers and that sort of thing. Also, I don’t know about you, but I love having the miner’s graffiti in the mines. Sometimes it is useful for providing dates, but when you can see the personalities of the miners carried through time on the ribs (sides) of an adit, I find that to be magical. The moment is long past and the miners may all be gone now, but it isn’t a stretch to imagine being there with the miners joking around with each other and giving each other a hard time. That caved section we talked about toward the end of the video that blocked our progress will become quite relevant again later. Don’t worry, you will see the other side of it. And in a very dramatic setting too! My apologies for the mild annoyance presented by the flickering effect in some scenes. This is produced by pulse width modulation from my headlamp. This old abandoned coal mine was one of the best ones i have ever explored. Littered with numerous shafts & tunnels, this mine even had its own underground structures. It was complete with a motor barn (repair shop), hospital room and foreman's room. While exploring, i even came across new areas that i plan on exploring on a return trip.
