The Great American Gem & Gold Rush: "Herkimer" (NY) Quartz 'Diamond' Digging

04:34
In the Northeast US, one of the earliest of gem & mineral discoveries since Colonial days, the peculiar quartz crystals of these hard dolomite rock deposits are still very popular world-wide. Gem Miner & Guide Frank Lavoie shows us the "Artisan" small mining/quarrying methods used to 'green' extract, by hand-tools, the valuable collectors' goals, crystals still upon the matrix rock where they formed, and as loose 'diamond' shapes ['double-terminated'] used as-is in jewelry. quartz gold crushing quartz - http://www.california-gold-rush-miner.us/ This is a December gold prospecting trip around Yuma Arizona.we were searching through some tailing piles from an old mine where the miners were following gold in a quartz vein.. We were doing dry washing and some metal detecting and met up with Daniel who is looking for iron stained courts in the tailing piles to crush and hopefully extract gold from the quartz rocks. Interesting Underground Gold Mine Stuffed With Quartz

27:30
This gold mine is one of those abandoned mines that didn’t look like much at first, but ended up being really interesting… Aside from the complexity of the underground workings we explored, we just kept finding stuff. Well, more accurately, I should say that my exploring buddy kept finding stuff. While I was inside the first adit looking around, Mr. McBride, discovered the lower adit and the buildings above the mine workings. Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about the history of this mine. As with many things, California is behind other states in digitizing the records in their archives. By contrast, Nevada is fantastic in this respect. The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology and the University of Nevada in Reno have done a really impressive job of digitizing and organizing their records online. So, for example, if you have the name of a mine, you can look through their database and find extensive records and maps for the mine you’re curious about. Obviously, not every historic mine is included in their database, but most are. Even without knowing the history though, it is apparent that this mine is an older mine that was worked off and on for quite a while. It also doesn’t seem to be a big stretch to assume that a respectable amount of gold was extracted. I’m basing that on the size of the workings and how the miners burrowed off in all directions from that quartz core where the pit was. They even went down and ran another adit in... Actually, as I was typing that, I realized that it may have been the other way around. If you’ll recall, the track in the lower adit was the “budget rail” where the miners nailed the metal strips onto boards to run the ore carts over. Since the track in the first adit I entered was solid metal rail, it would suggest the possibility that the miners may have done well enough in the lower adit to afford to splash out on expensive rail when driving a second adit above. In other words, the lower adit may have been the first adit. The mine buildings just above the underground workings were interesting to us given their age. The main building looked just large enough to accommodate a crew of approximately the size of the number of names on the board where the miners would badge in and badge out. It’s possible a mining crew could have worked this operation in the winter, but given its remote location, fairly poor dirt roads and heavy snowfall in the winter, it seems more likely this was a summer mining operation. Was that a grave at the end? What do you guys think that was? ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference. You can see the gear that I use for mine exploring here: https://bit.ly/2wqcBDD You can click here for my full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

Gold-Rich & High: Quartz Vein To The Sky

29:16
I struggled to come up with a descriptive title for this video. How to explain that incredible quartz vein – narrow, pure and running up so high that it went out of sight – that the gold miners chased? To me, it really did seem as if it ran to the sky… I have seen where miners have chased rich veins of quartz for impressive distances before, but I have never seen a quartz vein that was a solid slab running vertically to the heights that this one did. Another differentiating factor is that this vein must have been full of gold. One sees sections of quartz in many lode gold mines, but it is barren and so the miners leave it behind. This was different. In this mine, the miners cleared the whole vein out! Consider the – not one, but two – stamp mills outside, consider the effort the miners expended to reach that quartz vein and then to chase it up (the miners would have been drilling overhead the entire time in a space not much more than three feet wide), consider the expensive rail in this mine… The old timers were not stupid. They would not have spent that much money, they would not have done that much work and they would not have taken out that much quartz unless the gold to be found in that incredible quartz vein was worth it. And remember, that quartz vein was the only part of the mine where the miners took any ore out. Yet, they still required two stamp mills! I did not locate production numbers for this mine, but one can only imagine what was taken out. I don’t know how the miners discovered this deposit, especially as they located it before modern drilling and other technology the miners of today have at their disposal. I hiked down from the direction this mine runs and there was no sign of that quartz deposit on the surface. There were the remains of even older mining operations on the way down – the faint remains of a stamp mill, bits of metal, some surface work - and so maybe the miners had an inkling there was something below, but I don’t know what gave them the confidence to start blasting back for thousands of feet in a perfectly straight line. That was a major effort! Abandoned mining equipment is always interesting to me, but I was even more taken with the equipment at the outside of this mine as I had not heard of either of those companies – Krogh Manufacturing and Globe Iron Works – before. Usually, one will start to recognize the familiar names like Ingersoll Rand or Miners Foundry, but those names were new to me and, therefore, presumably older. The dates of the patents would seem to confirm this. The oxygen meter I was using at the time I explored this mine would alert when oxygen levels fell below 19.5%. However, it did not display what the actual percentage of oxygen was. Lower levels of oxygen are tolerable, but not MUCH lower levels. Without knowing what the actual percentage of oxygen was, I had to just judge the oxygen levels and safety by the symptoms I was experiencing. That’s pushing it a bit, but you’ve got to want it to see the treasures in life. I was alone on this trip, but with bad air it hardly matters if you are one person or a hundred. If you collapse from bad air, the guy behind you can’t grab you or he’ll succumb too. You’re done. It’s not like falling and breaking your leg or something where having someone else there will make a difference. So, it is important to pay close attention to the symptoms... With this particular oxygen meter it would stop working after alerting and being reset several times in the low O2 environment. Fortunately, the O2 meter I use now shows the exact percentage of oxygen so I can make a more informed decision on whether to proceed or not. In this mine, the low oxygen was almost certainly caused by the rotting timbers. I am glad that I didn’t turn around. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference. Bulk Sampling A High Grade Gold & Silver Quartz Vein Found In An Old Quarry!

11:29
A new quartz vein was found several months ago and we are currently removing ore by hand for a bulk sample. Mineralization is found in the form of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, bornite, galena and pyrite found as stringers and solid mineral in the vien. Prospecting an near by ore body as well, which has semi and massive sulfides striking through disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite in the host rock these samples assayed as high as 8g/ton Gold, 33g/ton Silver and up to 1% copper and molybdenum. The ore body is thirty meters away from a quartz vein in the old quarry. The solid mineral in the quartz vein is high grade and has up to 121g/ton au, 65g/ton ag and 11% copper. Average grade for the entire ore is listed at the end of the video. Au - 6.56g/ton Ag - 66g/ton Copper- 5.93% Lead - 3.44% Want to support us? Free Gold In A Deteriorated Quartz Vein!

12:16
Free gold in a deteriorated quartz vein. We take a sample and pan it out to reveal the amazing amount of gold from the vuggy quartz vein. Vein appears to be quartz as well as other brecciated materials. A old creek appears to have run on top of the outcrop and gold and minerals may have leached through bedrock crevices into the vein. Multiple other areas on the outcrop have sulfides and gold and this may be from a different source.

Old Gold Mine With A Massive Quartz Vein

06:07
An old gold mine with a massive quartz vein. A 100 meter adit with nice looking quartz found in a schistose rock. Some sulphides were found. One of our current properties has to be reached by traveling through a portion of this claim which is how we found the mine. The area has mass amounts of mineralization and is in a silitified and pyritized fracture zone 11km long and several kilometers wide in BC, Canada, this zone carries multiple gold, gemstone, mineral and VMS deposits. There are hundreds of heavily mineralized outcrops and multiple large and smaller deposits. Some mined over a hundred years ago, some are new discoveries. Host rock in the area consists schists, granodiorite and quartz feldspar, these host a schist panel which has multiple outcrops with quartz veins with free mill gold along with multiple sulphides over a huge zone. In 1869 Two Miners Set out in Search of Gold – and They Made a Record-Breaking Discovery

05:17
Today, Victoria is the second most populated state in Australia. In the mid-19th century, it was more like the American Wild West. This is because the country had a major gold rush. The idea of finding riches beyond their wildest dreams is what brought people from all over the world to the area. The gold rush in Australia began in February 1851, when specks of gold were discovered in New South Wales. After that, more and more gold was discovered. During the peak of the gold rush, two tons of gold per week were sent to Melbourne's Treasury Building. This helped Britain pay off its international debt, which allowed the country to expand its growing empire. The population significantly increased during this time. Since the first gold discovery, over a half million people moved to Australia. Some towns had a growth in the population of 1,000 people. Unfortunately, this didn't last. With much of the gold having been already found, there was no money to be made. In 1915, the export of gold from Australia was prohibited, and the gold standard was abolished. This left many towns abandoned. In the 1850s, when the gold rush was just beginning, word of the rush spread to Britain. Former tin miner, John Deason, and Richard Oates heard about the money to be made in Australia. At the time, the two men were living on Britain's southwest coast. They decided to give up in mining, and they sailed to Australia to try their luck as gold prospectors. They moved to the township of Moliagul in Victoria. Due to the gold rush, Moliagul was doing great. There were 11 pubs in the town during the gold rush. In 1855, over 16,000 people were living in the town. John and Richard were two of these residents. John and Richard tried to make a living being prospectors. It wasn't an easy job. If the men were unable to find any gold, they wouldn't make money. It wasn't long before the two men ran out of money for food. They knew that they needed just one big score to set themselves up for life. Unfortunately, in 1869, the men were in debt. They were so poor that they couldn't even get credit to buy flour. The two men refused to give up, and in February, the men tried their luck in another area. In 1869 Two Miners Set Out In Search Of Gold – And They Made A Record-Breaking Discovery. Around 9 am on February 5, 1869; John was digging in a new location. He was trying to get his pick around tree roots when the pick broke. He shouted, "Damn it! I wish it were a nugget." John took a closer look at what had broken his pick. When he looked down, he realized that he struck gold. He and Richard were looking at the huge nugget that they uncovered. John thought that the huge nugget was worth at least $6,000, and Richard thought that is was worth $2,600. Not wanting to wait, the two men hauled the massive nugget back to John's shack. The nugget was embedded in a layer of quartz. They had to get the gold out of the quartz, so they placed it on top of a fire. When it cooled down, they broke 70-pounds of quartz from the nugget. When they broke off the quartz that contained a lot of loose gold. The nugget was 24-inches long and 12-inches wide. They knew that they needed to weigh the giant nugget before selling it, so the two men stashed it in a calico bag. The next morning, the two men took their nugget, which they named, Welcome Stranger, to the London Chartered Bank in Donnelly so that it could be weighed. They were planning to get the weight and sell the nugget. The nugget was too large to fit on the bank's scale. They had to use sledgehammers and chisels to break the nugget down so that it could be weighed. When the gold was finally weighed, it totaled 210-pounds. It was the largest nugget ever to be found to this day. When news of John and Richard's find got out, people lined up at the bank to see the huge nugget. The men received over $12,000 and became instant celebrities. The two men were generous and gave a pound to each of their friends. This find was so huge that the town commissioned a stone memorial for the Welcome Stranger in 1897. If the nugget were found today, it is believed that it would be worth $8.5 million. Richard had no family to share his wealth with, but John had a wife, and he bought 80-acres of land to settle down an cultivate. Sadly, John lost all of his money in failed investments. By the time he died, he was broke. Just because he died a poor man, the town never forgot the John and Richard's fantastic find.

The Modern Gold Rush - Working Popular Creeks

18:26
#nosmallcreator #vogus #gold #goldrush Finding gold is a fickle thing, it takes persistence, skill, no small measure of luck and perseverance. Its a rare day when you can step onto the creek right on top of a spot that produces good gold. With the modern gold rush that we're currently in more people than ever are cutting their teeth in creeks across the globe. This leads to whole sale prospecting and soil movment on the most popular gold spots and can make reading and understanding creeks that much more difficult. On this trip I head out with Steve, a career Geologist, to a popular creek to show you some things that can help you identify likely spots, Steve gives us a geology lesson and I try not to loose sight of what's important. Take a short trip with me to Dawson City, Canada. Have a look at how the "average, not for TV" miner gets gold. No staged arguments, breakdowns, or deadlines. No scripted drama, or ridiculous million ounce goals. Just average miners trying to make a few bucks and have a little fun doing it. The mining season lasts from May to the first of October, or as soon as the water freezes. Thanks for watching. This is a copy of a previously uploaded video. I was forced to re upload this video due to technical reasons, sorry for any inconvenience.

Gold in Vermont

13:51
Update! Here is the sequel to Gold in Vermont: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmKzfpSROTI&t=577s In the 1850s Vermont had a small scale gold rush as prospectors flooded in searching the streams for gold. In this video I set out into the back woods of Vermont in search of placer gold much the same way it would have been found in the 1850s, by panning by hand. I then rappel underground into an abandoned gold mine in search of gold bearing ore.

Secret Miner’s Cabin & Mines In The Sierra Nevada - Part 1

16:18
Probably less than a dozen people know about the historic miner’s cabin hidden away on this mining claim - and even fewer still know about the abundance of gold mines found here… It remains a secret because the people that do know where this is remain tight-lipped about it and this cabin and mines are located in an absolute black hole on topographic and other maps. There is simply nothing marked anywhere near here. With the contractors for the Forest Service, BLM, Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) programs, et al working overtime (with taxpayer money) to get all of these historic mines erased, it is very nice to be introduced to some gold mines that are not (currently) in danger of being permanently closed. It is a shame that we have to wallow in such secrecy simply to protect a historically significant site from the very entities that should be preserving it, but such is the upside down world we live in. The two adits featured in this video appear to be quite old. I was able to find a couple of references to the mines consolidated on this claim in mining journals dating back to the turn of the last century and they were described as already having been worked for a while at that time. So, initial work here probably dates back to around the time of California’s “Gold Rush” era. The earliest gold miners in California were placer miners. However, when the easy pickings from the surface were worked out, they became lode miners and headed underground to start chasing the veins where the gold in the creeks originated from (some underground miners also chased the rich placer left behind by ancient river channels that were buried millions of years ago). The little hole by the creek under the huge boulder would have been referred to as a “coyote hole” by the miners of the time. These were in abundance along the creeks and rivers of California in the early days as the miners pursued gold flakes and nuggets back into the rocks and gravel lining the waterways. So, it seems likely that the small adit we visited first would have been the one developed initially and then the larger adit punching into the hard rock would have come along later. In further support of the idea that these mines are older rather than newer is that, although it may possibly have been there at one point, there was no sign of rail at the mines we visited. The claim owner also stated that he has never seen any sign of rail here either. It is not difficult to imagine a swarm of miners crawling all over these canyon walls like ants during the “Gold Rush” era, churning up the creeks and digging out coyote holes. This initial surge of miners, however, would have been followed by a more patient, more sophisticated group of miners that had an eye on heading underground. At the second adit shown in this video, for example, you could have had something like a father and son team or two brothers slowly working away at that lode mine for years, chasing those quartz veins and hauling load after load of ore and waste rock out in wheelbarrows. I’m giving more of a general feel for the area with these videos rather than showing every single bit of mining history present as both sides of this canyon are covered in mines and the remains of mining equipment. We’ll see more of that in the next video. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference. You can see the gear that I use for mine exploring here: https://bit.ly/2wqcBDD You can click here for my full playlist of abandoned mines that I have explored: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L Thanks for watching! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring
