Let’s start today with a very well-known and simple circuit known as ‘Series Inductor Filter Circuit for Full Wave Rectifier Circuit Using Diode ’.
Rectifier is an electronic device which converts the alternating current to unidirectional current, in other words rectifier converts the AC voltage to DC voltage.
Rectifier filter is an electronic circuit that removes ripple or unwanted AC signal components from the output of a Rectifier.
When we pass pulsating DC (Pulsating DC is a DC signal comprises of unwanted AC component known as ripples. ) through a inductor filter, it will able to remove ripples from the output and will smooth the output signal.
So let’s start with this circuit. First we will understand theoretical aspects of Inductor Filter, means we will understand the circuit diagram, do little derivation based on its circuit design and output waveform and then we will do practical session using LTspice.
LTspice is the best free simulation software supported by Linear Technology. The download and installation of LTspice is very easy and needs very less time.

In this video, i have explain filter with a easy anad simple example.
hope you have understood easily by this theoritical explanation.

Filters:
The devices which converts the pulsating DC in to pure DC is called filter. As the name specifies it filters the oscillations in the signal and provides a pure DC at the output. The electronic reactive elements like capacitor and inductors are used to do this work.
TYPE OF FILTER:
1. Inductive Filter (L)
The property of the inductor is that it opposes any sudden change that occurs in a circuit an provides a smoothed output. In the case of AC, there is change in the magnitude of current with time. So the inductor offers some impendence (opposing force) for AC ((XL = jwL) and offers shot circuit for DC. So by connecting inductor in series with the supply blocks AC and allows DC to pass.
2. Capacitor Filter
The elegant quality of the capacitor is it stores the electrical energy for short time and discharges it. By controlling the charging and discharging rate of the capacitor the pure DC can be obtained from the pulsating DC. In simple the capacitor allows AC and blocks DC, so the capacitor can connect parallel to the power supply so that the AC is filtered out and DC will reach the load.
3. LC Filter
In the above two filters the reactive components are singly connected, however no element will be perfect in doing the job i.e. inductor in series may pass small quantity of AC and Capacitor in parallel may not block all the AC component. So for better filtering two components are connected as filter which provides less ripple factor at the output compared to the above filter.
4. CLC or π filter
In L and LC filter the inductor connected in series to the power supply drops more AC voltage which reduces the efficiency. So to avoid this increase the efficiency a capacitor is connected at the input of the LC filter. The input capacitor charges & discharges and provides a ripple DC at the input of inductor. Then the drop at the inductor is less and provides a ripple less DC which again filtered by capacitor at the output.
Multiple connection the above filter provides better efficiency and less ripple factor at the output.

RECTIFIER CIRCUIT
The circuit which converts AC in DC is called Rectifier Circuit.
There are two types of Rectifier Circuit:
1. Half Wave Rectifier
2. Full Wave Rectifier
The unwanted AC-components at the output of Rectifier can be filtered using filter circuits. The smooth the output voltage of Rectifiers, Filter Circuit are used. The output of a Rectifier is not a pure DC, it is still having some AC components that we need to filtered out. This AC component removal action is done by Filter Circuit. Three-element filters can have a 'T' or 'π' topology and in either geometries, a low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, or band-stop characteristic is possible. The components can be chosen symmetric or not, depending on the required frequency characteristics. You can see that full wave rectifier is just one of the steps involved is producing a DC power supply.
So, if someone says perform full wave rectification of the signal, then you are right, you don’t need filters for that. But practically speaking a full wave rectified signal is not of much use, so in most of the examples, the books or tutorials go on to a next step of applying filters, just to make it practically useful circuit.
Now, coming back to filters, as you can see in diagram, capacitive filters holds the voltage to the maximum level and does not let it discharge quickly thus improving the average (DC) value of the signal.

Filters
The devices which converts the pulsating DC in to pure DC is called filter. As the name specifies it filters the oscillations in the signal and provides a pure DC at the output. The electronic reactive elements like capacitor and inductors are used to do this work.
Inductive Filter (L)
The property of the inductor is that it opposes any sudden change that occurs in a circuit an provides a smoothed output. In the case of AC, there is change in the magnitude of current with time. So the inductor offers some impendence (opposing force) for AC ((XL = jwL) and offers shot circuit for DC. So by connecting inductor in series with the supply blocks AC and allows DC to pass.
Capacitor Filter
The elegant quality of the capacitor is it stores the electrical energy for short time and discharges it. By controlling the charging and discharging rate of the capacitor the pure DC can be obtained from the pulsating DC. In simple the capacitor allows AC and blocks DC, so the capacitor can connect parallel to the power supply so that the AC is filtered out and DC will reach the load.
LC Filter
In the above two filters the reactive components are singly connected, however no element will be perfect in doing the job i.e. inductor in series may pass small quantity of AC and Capacitor in parallel may not block all the AC component. So for better filtering two components are connected as filter which provides less ripple factor at the output compared to the above filter.
CLC or π filter
In L and LC filter the inductor connected in series to the power supply drops more AC voltage which reduces the efficiency. So to avoid this increase the efficiency a capacitor is connected at the input of the LC filter. The input capacitor charges & discharges and provides a ripple DC at the input of inductor. Then the drop at the inductor is less and provides a ripple less DC which again filtered by capacitor at the output.
Multiple connection the above filter provides better efficiency and less ripple factor at the output.

This video describes the basics of Electronic Filters and their types, principle, construction and uses.
One of the more common uses of the capacitor and inductor that the technician may find in the field is that of the filter.
The nature of capacitance opposes a voltage change across its terminal by storing energy in its electrostatic field. Whenever the voltage tends to rise, the capacitor converts this voltage change to stored energy. When the voltage tends to fall, the capacitor converts this stored energy back to voltage.
The inductance provided by an inductor may be used as a filter, because it opposes a change in current through it by storing energy in its electromagnetic field. Whenever the current increases, the stored energy in the electromagnetic field increases. When the current through the inductor decreases, the inductor supplies the energy back into the circuit in order to maintain the existing flow of current.
Capacitors and inductors are combined in various ways to provide more satisfactory filtering than can be obtained with a single capacitor or inductor. These are referred to collectively as "LC filters."

This electronics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into full wave bridge rectifiers which are used to convert an AC sine wave signal into a pulsating DC signal. The electronic components used in this type of rectifier circuits are a transformer, 4 diodes, and a load resistor. To reduce the ripple voltage creating a smooth steady DC output signal - you should a shunt capacitor, an inductor, and a zener diode. The shunt capacitor will help to reduce voltage variations while the inductor will reduce variations in current. The zener diode serves as a voltage regulator.
