"The folks here work hard, theyre dedicated to safety, and theyre producing a valuable product in a responsible way that respects the mountain and Montana's outdoors," Tester said. "Montanans are proud of Stillwater and they should be." Tester reassured miners and mine executives that he's trying to get General Motors to reconsider its recent decision to stop buying palladium from Stillwater Mine. Palladium is a rare precious metal used to make catalytic converters in cars and trucks.

Mining begin in the Columbus Salt Marsh around 1863 and by 1865 two men by the name of Samuel Young and A.J. Holmes built a quartz mill for the purpose of processing gold and silver from the nearby mining town of Candelaria. That same year a 100 miners moved into the area because Columbus was an abundant water source since it was scare in SW Nevada. By the 1870's Borax had been discovered which is a prime ingredient in many soaps, detergents, cleaners and enamels. Some say Francis Smith the borax king in death valley made this discovery others say it was William Troup a miner from the Comstock Lode of Virginia City. Nobody knows for sure but four more Borax Mills sprung up and by 1875 Columbus had a 1000 residents. The town had its own post office, iron foundry, businesses, school, saloons, hotels, stores, homes, butcher shop, cemetery and even a newspaper. When the Pacific Coast Borax Company was relocated along with others that moved on the town by the mid 1800's dwindled to a 100 residents and eventually by 1899 the post office closed and several revivals have failed. I will take you into an eerie snowstorm with little to no visibility as we explore mills, miner cabins, snow covered stone ruins and even a cemetery riddled with wooden crosses. Not much remains of Columbus but this salt marsh was the site of some of the largest borax production in the country in its hey day and today borax is still being mined here found in daily household products still used today. We are the storm troopers of the salt marsh in sub zero temperatures, snow falling, winds howling and a vast expanse that hides its secrets well! Do you dare enter the white with us as we take on this forgotten ghost town? http://paranormalghostsociety/ColumbusNevada.htm Future Gladiator by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200051 Artist: http://incompetech.com/

Various of members of a Canadian mining company, Majescor Resources, placing cylinders of rocks in wooden boxes. (The samples will be sent to Chile to determine how much copper, silver and gold they contain.) 5. Various of rock samples 6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Michel Lamarre, Haitian engineer: "It is fantastic for the country, fantastic. First, in the convention that we have with the Haitian Bureau de Mines (Bureau of Mines), we have 50 per cent of the profit. 50 percent of the profit will be split between our company and the government. So it will be a lot of money for the government, a lot of money, we hope, to help that region evolve, to get some people working around the area." 7. Various of a stone cutter at work 8. SOUNDBITE: (Haitian Creole) Joseph Bernard, Haitian worker: "Many people here have found a job with the mining companies. I'm one of them. It has helped me get money to be able to help my family and get them more opportunities." 9. Various of geologist and Haitian workers drilling for Newmont Mining Corporation 10. Mid of a group of children looking at the workers 11. Wide of drilling team STORYLINE: A flurry of exploratory drilling in Haiti has found precious metals worth potentially 20 (b) billion US dollars deep below the tropical ridges in the country's northeastern mountains. Now, a mining company is drilling around the clock to determine how to get those metals out. Haiti's annual budget is one (b) billion U.S. dollars, of which more than half is provided by foreign aid. A windfall from local resources could pay for roads, schools, clean water and sewage systems for the nation's 10 (m) million people, most of whom live on as little as 1.25 US dollars a day. "It is fantastic for the country," said Michel Lamarre, a Haitian engineer whose firm, SOMINE, is leading the exploration. "It will be a lot of money for the government, a lot of money, we hope, to help the region evolve, to get some people working around the area." Stone cutter Joseph Bernard, 47, said that before he got a job slicing rock samples, his family was going hungry. They had one cow and their peanut and bean fields had turned to dust after months without rain. Now his son and two daughters have started school. "Many people here have found a job with the mining companies. I'm one of them. It has helped me get money to be able to help my family and get them more opportunities," he said. On a rugged, steep Haitian ridge far above the Atlantic, brilliant boulders coated with blue-green oxidised copper jut from the hills, while colourful pebbles litter the soil, strong indicators that precious metals lie below. Geologists extrapolating from depth and strike reports estimate there may be at least one (m) million ounces (28-thousand kilograms) of gold at two sites. In April, prospectors also found the first significant silver deposit ever reported in Haiti: between 20 and 30 (m) million ounces (567-thousand to 850-thousand kilograms). And geologists suspect that more than one (m) million tonnes of copper may also lay beneath the top soil. Gold was last gathered in Haiti in the 1500s, after Christopher Columbus ran his ship the Santa Maria onto a Haitian reef. Spaniards enslaved the Arawak Indians to dig for gold, killing them off with harsh conditions and infectious diseases. When the Spaniards learned of even more lucrative deposits in Mexico, they moved on. It was only after the catastrophic 2010 earthquake that investors saw real opportunity. Though the contractual terms are generous for Haiti there is plenty to be cautious about. The state’s major routes evolved from ancient Native American trails into four-lane expressways in a little over a century. That story is one of difficult, groundbreaking, and sometimes poor engineering decisions, as well as a desire to make a journey faster, safer, and more comfortable. It all started in 1860, when John Mullan hacked a wagon road over the formidable Rocky Mountains to Fort Benton. It continued until the last section of interstate highway opened to traffic in 1988. Montana Department of Transportation historian Jon Axline charts a road trip through the colorful and inspiring history of trails, roads, and superhighways in Big Sky Country.
