UP ON CRIPPLE CREEK The Band The Band (1970) When I get off of this mountain, you know where I want to go? Straight down the Mississippi river, to the Gulf of Mexico To Lake Charles, Louisiana, little Bessie, girl that I once knew She told me just to come on by, if there's anything she could do Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Good luck had just stung me, to the race track I did go She bet on one horse to win and I bet on another to show The odds were in my favor, I had 'em five to one When that nag to win came around the track, sure enough she had won Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one I took up all of my winnings, and I gave my little Bessie half And she tore it up and threw it in my face, just for a laugh Now there's one thing in the whole wide world, I sure would like to see That's when that little love of mine, dips her doughnut in my tea Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Now me and my mate were back at the shack, we had Spike Jones on the box She said, "I can't take the way he sings, but I love to hear him talk" Now that just gave my heart a throb, to the bottom of my feet And I swore and I took another pull, my Bessie can't be beat Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Now there's a flood out in California and up north it's freezing cold And this living on the road is getting pretty old So I guess I'll call up my big mama, tell her I'll be rolling in But you know, deep down, I'm kind of tempted To go and see my Bessie again. Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

The Band - Up on Cripple Creek

04:39
According to Wikipedia: "Up on Cripple Creek" is the fifth song on The Band's eponymous second album, The Band. It was released as a (edited) single on Capitol 2635 in November 1969 and reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Up on Cripple Creek" was written by Band guitarist and principal songwriter Robbie Robertson, with drummer Levon Helm singing lead vocal. A live performance of "Up on Cripple Creek" appears in The Band's live concert film The Last Waltz, as well as on the accompanying soundtrack album. In addition, a live version of the song appears on Before the Flood; a live album of The Band's various concerts and shows with Bob Dylan while touring together in 1974. "Up on Cripple Creek" is notable as it is one of the first accounts of a Hohner Clavinet being played with a wah-wah pedal. The riff can be heard after the chorus of the song. The Clavinet, especially in tandem with a wah pedal was a sound that became famous in the early to mid '70s especially in funk music, and continues to be popular to this day. Lyrics: When I get off of this mountain, you know where I want to go? Straight down the Mississippi river, to the Gulf of Mexico To Lake Charles, Louisiana, little Bessie-girl I once knew She told me just to come on by, if there's anything that she could do Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak, she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Good luck had just stung me, to the race track I did go She bet on one horse to win and I bet on another to show The odds were in my favor, I had 'em five to one When that nag to win came around the track, sure enough we had won Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak, she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one I took up all of my winnings, and I gave my little Bessie half She tore it up and threw it in my face, just for a laugh Now there's one thing in the whole wide world, I sure would like to see That's when that little love of mine dips her doughnut in my tea Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak, she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Now me and my mate were back at the shack, we had Spike Jones on the box She said, "I can't take the way he sings, but I love to hear him talk" Now that just gave my heart a throb, to the bottom of my feet And I swore as I took another pull, my Bessie can't be beat Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak, she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one There's a flood out in California and up north it's freezing cold And this living off the road is gettin' pretty old So I guess I'll call up my big mama, tell her I'll be rolling in But you know, deep down, I'm kind of tempted To go and see my Bessie again Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak, she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

THE BAND live at Big Pink 1969 "Up On Cripple Creek" beyond rare

02:37
Incredible footage of The Band (said to be) from the house they called Big Pink (Bob Dylan's "club house"). Up On Cripple Creek - Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Garth... everyone sweet and young and rockin'. Although this turns out to not be Pig Pink, the footage is equal to the time frame and area. Awesome stuff this one, big time rare and early. ** Introduction by Robbie + Grace Slick speaks for a few seconds part way through).** Regardless of location, it is excellent footage...

The Weight - The Band (lyrics)

04:33
Noticed that the non-live version of this song wasn't on youtube.. Lyrics: I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead I just need some place where I can lay my head "Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?" He just grinned and shook my hand, "no" was all he said Take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me) I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on let's go downtown" She said, "I gotta go but my friend can stick around" Take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me) Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say It's just ol' Luke and Luke's waitin' on the Judgment Day "Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?" He said, "Do me a favor, son, won't you stay and keep Anna Lee company?" Take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me) Crazy Chester followed me and he caught me in the fog He said, "I will fix your rack if you'll take Jack, my dog" I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man" He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can" Yeah, take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me) Catch a cannon ball now to take me down the line My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she's the only one Who sent me here with her regards for everyone Take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me)

Rag Mama Rag - The Band (The Band 2 of 12)

03:06
RAG MAMA RAG The Band The Band (1970) Rag Mama Rag, I can't believe its true. Rag Mama Rag, A - what did you do? I crawled up to the railroad track, Let the four nine-teen scratch my back. Shag Mama Shag, now whats come over you. Rag Mama Rag, I'm a-pulling out your gag. Gonna turn you lose like an old caboose, got a tail I need a drag. I ask about your turtle, and you ask about the weather, Well, I can't jump the hurdle and we can't get to-gether. We could be relaxing in my sleeping bag, But all you want to do for me mama is a Rag Mama Rag Theres no-where to go, Rag Mama Rag Come on resin up the bow. Rag Mama Rag, where do ya roam? Rag Mama Rag, bring your skinny little body right home. Its dog eat dog and cat eat mouse, you can Rag Mama Rag all over my house. Hail stones beatin on the roof, The bourbon is a hundred proof. It's you and me and the telephone Our destiny is quite well known. We don't need to sit and brag. All we gotta do is Rag Mama Rag. Rag Mama Rag. Where do you roam? Rag Mama Rag, bring your skinny little body back home.

The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

04:16
From the 1978 film 'The Last Waltz' Virgil Caine is the name, and I served on the Danville train, Til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again. In the winter of '65, We were hungry, just barely alive. By May tenth, Richmond had fell, it's a time I remember, oh so well, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, when all the bells were ringing, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and all the people were singin'. They went, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Back with my wife in Tennessee, When one day she called to me, Said "Virgil, quick, come and see, there goes the Robert E. Lee!" Now I don't mind choppin' wood, and I don't care if the money's no good. Ya take what ya need and ya leave the rest, But they should never have taken the very best. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, when all the bells were ringing, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and all the people were singin'. They went, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Like my father before me, I will work the land, And like my brother above me, who took a rebel stand. He was just eighteen, proud and brave, But a Yankee laid him in his grave, And I swear by the mud below my feet, You can't raise a Caine back up when he's in defeat. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, when all the bells were ringing, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and all the people were singin'. They went, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na,

"IT'S UP ON WIKILEAKS" (color corrected) by "Loose Bruce" Kerr to the Band's "Up On Cripple Creek"

02:05
"IT'S UP ON WIKILEAKS" is "Loose Bruce" Kerr's latest parody, based on The Band's "Up On Cripple Creek." Bruce is an irregular feature on the Dr. Demento and Jim Bohannon nationally syndicated radio and internet shows. Most recently, Bruce's 2001 original song, "Naked Airlines" was featured on Dr. Demento. Bruce wishes to thank Jill Prescott for pushing Bruce to cover the WikiLeaks story a few days ago. Thanks, Jill! Bruce records his audios one track at a time, then sings lead vocal live & often plays guitar live over it in the video version. After a 20 year stint to perform and write music, Bruce resumed his legal career and is now an attorney working at Oracle in Northern California's Silicon Valley. Bruce's high res videos and mp3 audios are available for free on loosebrucekerr.com email Bruce at: [email protected]

Up On Cripple Creek (by The Band--Reunited, live in NYC '86)

04:53
Skip Way here with Up On Cripple Creek ~ my riffs on a photo of flowers taken by my sister Andrea. The soundtrack is a live performance by The Band (Reunited, Jim Weider on guitar) of Up On Cripple Creek, a song from their 2nd album, 1969's "The Band." This performance was at The Lone Star Cafe in New York City on 2-8-86. As he did on the album, Levon Helm handles the lead vocals. This performance is poignant because this show was pianist and sometime drummer Richard Manuel 's last performance in NYC. Less than a month later he was found hanged in his motel room in Florida where The Band was on tour. He was the first original member to die. Bass player/vocalist Rick Danko and drummer/mandolin player/vocalist Levon Helm are now also gone. Organist, keyboardist and saxophonist Garth Hudson and original guitarist and primary songwriter Robbie Robertson (who wrote this song) survive. Robbie called it a day after The Last Waltz, The Band's farewell concert at Winterland in San Francisco on Nov. 25, 1976. The remaining members reformed in 1983. Jim Weider joined on guitar in 1985. Click on the "X" to close the ad. It is my hope that I will be able to share this touching performance in this video without complaint. If any rights holder complains, I will take the video down. No copyright infringement is intended; the rights to this music should be owned by the artists but are controlled by the record companies and music publishers. Since I am using this music for non-commercial purposes to educate those not familiar with these wonderful musicians and to share it with those who have not heard this performance. I would hope it is considered "fair use" under Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976.

Alexander "Skip" Spence - Cripple Creek

02:17
From his only solo album, "Oar" ---- Wikipedia: Alexander Lee "Skip" Spence (April 18, 1946 -- April 16, 1999) was a musician and singer-songwriter. He was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Spence was a guitarist in an early line-up of Quicksilver Messenger Service before Marty Balin recruited him to be the drummer for Jefferson Airplane. After one album with Jefferson Airplane, their debut Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, he left to co-found Moby Grape, once again as a guitarist. During the recording session of the group's second album, Wow in 1968, Spence allegedly attempted to break down a bandmate's hotel room door with a fire axe while under the influence of LSD. Spence was committed for six months to New York City's Bellevue Hospital, where he was subsequently diagnosed with schizophrenia. Upon his release, he recorded his only solo album, the now-classic psychedelic/folk album Oar (1969, Columbia Records). However, mental illness and alcoholism prevented him from sustaining a career in the music industry, and he spent most of his later life homeless in and around San Jose and Santa Cruz, California. He died in 1999, from lung cancer. He was 52.

Nickel Creek: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

20:01
Nickel Creek was made to sing and play around a single microphone, so a Tiny Desk Concert seemed inevitable. All it took was a reunion tour — celebrating 25 years of Nickel Creek — to make it happen. All three of the band's remarkably talented core members have been to the Tiny Desk before. Chris Thile is a veteran, having played the Tiny Desk with friend and guitarist Michael Daves, then later in the same year with Yo-Yo Ma and others in a project known as Goat Rodeo. When The Decemberists performed a Tiny Desk Concert, Sara Watkins was there to play her fiddle and sing. Her brother, Sean Watkins, was also at the NPR offices earlier this year with the marvelous singer Tom Brosseau. The trio, backed here by bassist Mark Schatz, has no equal. Nickel Creek has been doing this on and off since its members were kids, and what blows me away is the comfort and ease with which they navigate their instruments. That skill, and the creative force behind it, is a joy and a thrill to witness. --BOB BOILEN Set List: "Destination" "Rest Of My Life" "21st Of May" "Elephant In The Corn" Credits: Producers: Bob Boilen, Denise DeBelius; Audio Engineer: Kevin Wait; Videographers: Denise DeBelius, Colin Marshall; Production Assistant: Maggie Starbard; photo by Sarah Tilotta/NPR

Creedence Clearwater Revival: The Midnight Special

04:14
Creedence Clearwater Revival The Midnight Special Willy and the Poor Boys Lyrics: Well you wake up in the mornin you hear the work bell ring And they march you to the table to see the same old thing. Aint no food upon the table and no pork up in the pan. But you better not complain boy you get in trouble with the man. Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me Let the Midnight Special shine a everlovin light on me. Yonder come miss Rosie, how in the world did you know? By the way she wears her apron, and the clothes she wore. Umbrella on her shoulder, piece of paper in her hand; She come to see the govnor, she wants to free her man. Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me, Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me, Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me, Let the Midnight Special shine a everlovin light on me.
