UP ON CRIPPLE CREEK The Band The Band (1970) When I get off of this mountain, you know where I want to go? Straight down the Mississippi river, to the Gulf of Mexico To Lake Charles, Louisiana, little Bessie, girl that I once knew She told me just to come on by, if there's anything she could do Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Good luck had just stung me, to the race track I did go She bet on one horse to win and I bet on another to show The odds were in my favor, I had 'em five to one When that nag to win came around the track, sure enough she had won Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one I took up all of my winnings, and I gave my little Bessie half And she tore it up and threw it in my face, just for a laugh Now there's one thing in the whole wide world, I sure would like to see That's when that little love of mine, dips her doughnut in my tea Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Now me and my mate were back at the shack, we had Spike Jones on the box She said, "I can't take the way he sings, but I love to hear him talk" Now that just gave my heart a throb, to the bottom of my feet And I swore and I took another pull, my Bessie can't be beat Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Now there's a flood out in California and up north it's freezing cold And this living on the road is getting pretty old So I guess I'll call up my big mama, tell her I'll be rolling in But you know, deep down, I'm kind of tempted To go and see my Bessie again. Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

According to Wikipedia: "Up on Cripple Creek" is the fifth song on The Band's eponymous second album, The Band. It was released as a (edited) single on Capitol 2635 in November 1969 and reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Up on Cripple Creek" was written by Band guitarist and principal songwriter Robbie Robertson, with drummer Levon Helm singing lead vocal. A live performance of "Up on Cripple Creek" appears in The Band's live concert film The Last Waltz, as well as on the accompanying soundtrack album. In addition, a live version of the song appears on Before the Flood; a live album of The Band's various concerts and shows with Bob Dylan while touring together in 1974. "Up on Cripple Creek" is notable as it is one of the first accounts of a Hohner Clavinet being played with a wah-wah pedal. The riff can be heard after the chorus of the song. The Clavinet, especially in tandem with a wah pedal was a sound that became famous in the early to mid '70s especially in funk music, and continues to be popular to this day. Lyrics: When I get off of this mountain, you know where I want to go? Noticed that the non-live version of this song wasn't on youtube.. Lyrics: I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead I just need some place where I can lay my head "Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?" He just grinned and shook my hand, "no" was all he said Take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me) I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on let's go downtown" She said, "I gotta go but my friend can stick around" Take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me) Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say It's just ol' Luke and Luke's waitin' on the Judgment Day "Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?" He said, "Do me a favor, son, won't you stay and keep Anna Lee company?" Take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me) Crazy Chester followed me and he caught me in the fog He said, "I will fix your rack if you'll take Jack, my dog" I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man" He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can" Yeah, take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me) Catch a cannon ball now to take me down the line My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she's the only one Who sent me here with her regards for everyone Take a load off, Fanny Take a load for free Take a load off, Fanny And (and) (and) you put the load right on me (You put the load right on me)

Skip Way here with Up On Cripple Creek ~ my riffs on a photo of flowers taken by my sister Andrea. The soundtrack is a live performance by The Band (Reunited, Jim Weider on guitar) of Up On Cripple Creek, a song from their 2nd album, 1969's "The Band." This performance was at The Lone Star Cafe in New York City on 2-8-86. As he did on the album, Levon Helm handles the lead vocals. This performance is poignant because this show was pianist and sometime drummer Richard Manuel 's last performance in NYC. Less than a month later he was found hanged in his motel room in Florida where The Band was on tour. He was the first original member to die. Bass player/vocalist Rick Danko and drummer/mandolin player/vocalist Levon Helm are now also gone. Organist, keyboardist and saxophonist Garth Hudson and original guitarist and primary songwriter Robbie Robertson (who wrote this song) survive. Robbie called it a day after The Last Waltz, The Band's farewell concert at Winterland in San Francisco on Nov. 25, 1976. The remaining members reformed in 1983. Jim Weider joined on guitar in 1985. Click on the "X" to close the ad. It is my hope that I will be able to share this touching performance in this video without complaint. If any rights holder complains, I will take the video down. No copyright infringement is intended; the rights to this music should be owned by the artists but are controlled by the record companies and music publishers. Since I am using this music for non-commercial purposes to educate those not familiar with these wonderful musicians and to share it with those who have not heard this performance. I would hope it is considered "fair use" under Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976.

See my entire film at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002MINVE . Or watch this clip from the same session - https://youtu.be/te_OoPaEFK0 . My classic 90 minute music documentary records Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe and Earl and his son Randy and Doc Watson and his son Merle, in informal scenes playing & singing together. If you love Doc Watson and Bill Monroe and old time Bluegrass Music, you will love watching and listening to this. In 1972, PBS prime-timed a documentary music special on Earl Scruggs the bluegrass banjo picker. It included Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Bill Monroe, Charlie Daniels, The Morris Brothers, and Doc Watson. The film was not available to the public for over 30 years. Now it is available again. Said Bruce Elder of The All Music Guide: "Earl Scruggs was a few years past his partnership with Lester Flatt when made did 'Earl Scruggs: The Bluegrass Banjo Legend' a filled with stars effort that succeeds. There are great scenes at the Grand Ole Opry with Bill Monroe, at the homes of Doc Watson and members of Earl's North Carolina family, at the The Byrds ranch, at the home of The Morris Brothers (Salty Dog Blues), in Carmel, NY with Bob Dylan, etc. etc. The music here is glorious." Earl Scruggs: The Bluegrass Legend is the only full-length film on Earl's life & times. #docwatson #earlscruggs #cripplecreek #banjo #northcarolina

This video is a simulated virtual jam session. The musicians in the video play Cripple Creek at multiple speeds and play backup when it's your turn to solo. The video is designed to help get you ready for real jam sessions by giving you practice in starting your solo on time and playing in time with the band. This YouTube version is shorter that the version available on the site. To watch the complete version go to http://mandolincompass.com/lessons/tabs/cripple-creek-jam-session/ If you play other instruments, such as guitar, banjo, fiddle, etc. this video works just fine too! Good luck and happy jammin'!

Levon had been scheduled to appear on the show that aired on January 6, 1983 (taped the day before) but he never showed up. So Dave invited to home base the show's Talent Coordinator, Segment Producer and fellow writer, Gerard Mulligan, to discuss what Levon could have talked about if he were there. Levon's manager was in the green room, so Dave tried to bring him out. A week later, on January 11, Levon finally arrived and apologized for his no-show the previous week due to a fire that had destroyed his pick-up truck. After chatting with Dave and performing "Rag Mama Rag," Levon sat in with the band for the rest of the show. In addition here are the songs Levon performed with the band during the commercial breaks: first, "Caldonia," then "Hand Jive," and finally "Just Goes to Show You (The World is Mad)" (many thanks to Babbage3 for identifying it).

The song debuted August 18, 1970 at Fillmore West in San Francisco. Like many folk songs, "Ripple" addresses itself as a song and an instrument of the performers' emotional expression. Several lines throughout the song echo the 23rd Psalm of the Bible. Trip hard and good, motherfuckers.
