MINING JOBS TV Episode 3: Unskillled & Entry Level Mining Jobs Brought to you by www.miningresumes.com - Kick-start your mining career today and email us at [email protected] or call Mining Resumes on 1300 737 863 Welcome to Episode 3 of Mining Jobs TV. Hi my name is Matt and I will be speaking to you today about unskilled and entry level jobs in the Australian mining industry. Mining Jobs TV is a FREE online TV channel presenting regular episodes where we will discuss mining jobs and tips that will help you to secure a job in the industry. You may have probably heard the stories about a friend of a friend who is earning over $100,000 a year on a mine somewhere in Western Australia or Queensland and wondered how you could get a mining job too. Entry level or unskilled jobs, like trade assistants or plant operators are hard to get now as every man and his dog are applying for them. The best way to get these jobs would be to move out to the little mining towns and live there and register with all the labour hire companies, there are hundreds of them. Trades people like fitters, welders, boilermakers and electricians still have a fairly good chance of picking up work on mining sites. If you don't have a trade, doing a rigging or scaffolding course would give you a good chance at getting a job, the courses are only about 4 weeks long, but they are fairly expensive. Other unskilled or basic jobs available include cleaners, laundry workers and kitchen hands which is not difficult if you have hospitality training and experience. Talking to people who are currently working on mining sites can be a big help, especially if you have no previous experience or qualifications. It would be even better if you could get in contact with expats from your own country who are working on mining sites. They can let you know who to call and what you need to do. If you are inexperienced and unqualified you need to be fit and ready for physical labour. The work will be very repetitive and routine based with long 12 hour days, so you really need to be mentally prepared, as well as physically. Some mines will have a very high turnover of workers. This is because many people go to work on the mines not knowing what to expect. Because there can be such a high turnover, you may not start earning big money straight away, although your wages won't be small either. Once you've proved yourself to be a reliable worker, your wages should increase. Most mining companies will run police checks, as well as drug and alcohol tests. Even though there are wet mess areas on-site where workers can unwind and drink alcohol, they do have to drink in moderation and be fit-for-work before their shift starts Shutdowns are exactly what the name suggests. Every now and then mining sites need to shut down for upgrades, maintenance or repairs and they usually hire people temporarily to work during shut downs. A lot of the work is unskilled and doesn't last very long, so it's great for backpackers who want to keep on travelling and don't want to make a full-time commitment. It's also a great way to get your foot in the door and gain valuable on-site experience. To do certain mining jobs you will need to get licences and training, or 'tickets' as they are more commonly known. There are lots of different types of tickets depending on what type of work you're going to do. Some tickets can be very expensive and mines in different states require different tickets, so you really need to do your research before you start spending money on courses. Don't think that just because you're female that the mining companies and recruiters won't consider you. The mining industry in Australia is becoming increasingly gender neutral. It's not just cooking and cleaning jobs either on offer for women either; more and more women are working on Australian mining sites, and in some cases, companies even prefer women for certain jobs. For example, a popular job for women on mining sites is driving a dump truck because research has shown that women are easier on the multi-million dollar equipment yet still get the job done. It's most important to ensure you have the resume professionally worded and designed to stand out from your competitors. We highly recommended Mining Resumes to prepare your resume as they are the industry leaders in resume preparation for clients seeking jobs in the mining and oil & gas industry. They can be contacted via phone on 1300 RESUME or have a look at their website miningresumes.com with package details and samples browse that demonstrate their quality and experience. It's an exciting prospect to go underground, extract rock and process it until you are left with a solid bar of gold but that's exactly what Caleb Lese from Dunedin will find out all about when he heads to Macraes mine in Otago. Heading underground he learns that the 12 hour shifts begin and end with a blast and that the multi-million dollar subterranean digging machines are one of the main tools used by the mine. While these 'bogger' machines can be used by an operator, they can also be operated remotely when the area being worked on is unsupported. Caleb is keen to see if operating a bogger remotely is as easy as it looks but soon learns it might take a little more training to become proficient! At the processing plant, Caleb finds out more about how the gold is extracted from the sulphur rock and how from the plant processing control room around 95 per cent of the plant can be managed. Then it's off to see if there is any gold at the end of the rainbow and to his surprise, the $800,000 bar of gold he holds is much heavier than he expected! There are a wide range of roles within the gold mining industry and much of the training can be done on the job. For Caleb, it is certainly something to think about for his future. Although it is harder to tell than with some other abandoned mines, this mine, which was primarily a silver mine, had a lot going on underground. According to a report I read from the mid-1980s, there are approximately 6,000 feet of underground workings at this site. Additional reports indicated that the two shafts intersected with multiple levels – 70’, 100’, 200’, 250’ as well as at least one significant decline. The first indications of production I saw dated back to 1921 and by 1988 all work seems to have tapered off.

Hotel Coolgardie - Interview with director Pete Gleeson about his remarkably fly-on-the-wall documentary about two Finnish backpackers who, after being robbed of their savings in Bali, gets jobs as barmaids in a remote West Australian pub. The behaviours they encounter are not precisely in line with what you'd expect in the 21st century. The film has been a festival favourite in the US, attracting favourable reviews and coverage.

Australia - a country road trains. In the Australian outback, where for hundreds of kilometers around you to meet a couple of other cattle-farms, or "stations", as they call them, train - a vital necessity. After all, in order to deliver the goods to the destination of the train, the owner, such as a sheep station would have to get their living from the load to the nearest railway hundreds of kilometers. Road trains - powerful trucks, which stretches for two, three (and sometimes more) of huge trailer, capable in a matter of days to cross the Green Continent, connecting the country's states and territories. Longyearbyen on Svalbard is the northernmost settlement with over 1000 residents My trip to Norway was funded by Screen Australia, Film Victoria and Genepool Productions as part of a new project. More information soon. More info on Svalbard: http://wke.lt/w/s/yiYNC Music licensed from www.cuesongs.com "After Catalunya" Spotify page: https://play.spotify.com/artist/2JnQ2AxkaRjlGCNmfkHiJd iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/artist/emphemetry/id414183064 Captions: Come take a walk with me around Longyearbyen, the largest town on the Norwegian islands of Svalbard. Parts of it look familiar, but make no mistake, this place is different. At 78 degrees North, it lies just 800 miles or 1300 kilometres from the North Pole. And with over 2,000 permanent inhabitants it is the Northernmost real town on Earth. There are only 50km of road, including the small streets between houses, so people get around the island mainly on snowmobile. In fact there are more registered snowmobiles than residents. Anyone leaving town is required to travel with a gun and someone who knows how to use it because the islands are also home to polar bears. The average daytime high is below freezing for all but four months of the year, and from the end of October to mid-February the sun doesn’t rise at all. This is the long polar night. Living here is tough. This past December an avalanche in town destroyed 10 homes, which used to be here, killing two people. So how did this cold, remote, ice-covered archipelago come to be inhabited? The hills around town are rich in coal deposits that have been mined for over 100 years. The coal was transported to the port via a series of aerial tramways some of which remain today, though they are no longer operational. Coal is a reminder that Svalbard was not always an Arctic ice world. 360 million years ago it was actually in the tropics North of the equator. A swampy area, it was covered with the precursors to modern ferns, which were much larger than they are today, reaching 10-30 metres in height. This vegetation was then covered in mud and sand and submerged under the sea. Over time it turned into the coal deposits that in the 20th century brought miners from Norway, Russia, and the US. Most of the coal mines have now closed and the economy is gradually shifting towards tourism, education and research. Tourists take trips on snowmobiles and dog sleds. There is a university centre in Svalbard, which offers semester courses in biology, physics and geology. And up on the side of a mountain is the Svalbard Global seed vault… but that’s a story for another time. The locals tell me that interest in the region from different nations is increasing. As the globe warms and Arctic ice shrinks, trade routes are opening up across the North. And Svalbard is strategically placed between North America, Asia and Europe. One day in the future Svalbard may no longer be as cold or remote as it once was. But for now it is a reminder of how through our ingenuity people can live in the most inhospitable of places. Despite irrefutable scientific evidence calling out the dangers of asbestos, 2 million tons of the carcinogen are exported every year to the developing world, where it's often handled with little to no regulation. For this episode of VICE Reports, correspondent Milène Larsson traveled to the world's largest asbestos mine in the eponymous town of Asbest, Russia, to meet workers whose livelihoods revolve entirely around the dangerous mineral. Surprisingly, the risks associated with asbestos mining didn't seem to worry the inhabitants; in fact, asbestos is the city's pride, celebrated with monuments, songs, and even its own museum. Larsson then visits Libby, Montana, another mining town almost on the other side of the globe, where the effects of asbestos exposure are undeniable: 400 townspeople have died from asbestos-related diseases, and many more are slowly choking to death. Why is the deadly industry of mining and selling asbestos still alive and well? Deep in Western Australia, under the harshest conditions imaginable, only mankind's most advanced technology will get the world's most precious metal out of the ground. Each year, hundreds flock to Kalgoorlie, the legendary frontier town in the Australian outback, to make their fortune seeking gold. Men have been digging here for over a hundred years -- and have found over 50 million ounces of gold. To get the gold, you don't need connections, you don't need schooling and you don't need years of experience. All you need is a dream and the will -- to continue, no matter the odds, no matter the personal cost, no matter how extreme the conditions. The challenge? To stay alive. http://natgeotv.com.au

Gold production will increase in 2018 with fresh ore from recently acquired FELDA land (Block 7) and the northern Peranggih gold project, where the company has found gold nuggets while testing. In December 2017, the company is going to deliver an internal feasibility study for its sulphide plant with BIOX leaching at Selinsing in Malaysia. Monument's second mine, the Murchison gold mine in Western Australia, is scheduled to go into production in 2018 after securing additional funding for construction, pre-production and exploration.

Gold is now primarily found in very low concentrations. Open pit mines, like the one shown in this video, process tons of rock in order to extract just a few ounces. This process is extremely damaging to the environment. Heimo Korth is the last man standing in 19 million acres of Alaskan wilderness. His neighbors are polar bears and caribous. Say good bye to civilization and see how they do it in the arctic circle on the last frontier in America. In 1980, Jimmy Carter established the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the Alaskan Interior, cutting off 19 million acres of prime boreal wilderness from the mitts of fur trappers, oil tycoons, and would-be lodge owners alike. Only six families of white settlers were grandfathered in and allowed to keep cabins in the refuge—of them, only one still stays there year-round living off the land. His name is Heimo Korth, and he is basically the Omega Man of Americas Final Frontier.
