Call me a fagit or liberal but how can anyone in their right mind believe this could work for civilisation? The shear stupidity of carving/drilling/fracking the heart out our planet...but as long as the money flows towards the corporation owners and stakeholders the rest of us are brainwashed into believing its the only way to power our T.Vs so we can watch more brainwashing.

Coal generates what % of the world’s electricity? ----More than 40% Which US city is surrounded by coal reserves? ----Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania How large is the network of mines underground? ----35 Square Miles Describe the relationship the miners have to each other. Why is it important? ----Unspoken bond between them. It is important because they have to help each other, and they are in constant contact underground. What is a “continuous miner”? ----Monster machine that chomps away at the scene carving out a series of access tunnels The “long-wall shearer” removes how any tons of coal per minute? ----50 tons of coal every minutes Before the coal is ready for shipment, what must be done? ----Remove rock, soil and contaminants. In the separation stage, does the coal sink or float? ---The coal floats to be separated. What happens to the water that is removed from the wet coal? ---Fed into vast tanks where contaminants will be removed How is coal transported once it is ready for shipment? ----They transport it by rail

you would think these people would wear a mask or something .........also unless there is an accident what are they actually do , monitoring machines and go up and down, that does not seem to hard if you ask me, I am getting tired of people calling an operator labor , you are "driving" a machine so stop crying rivers about hard work

Honesty Counts (1 year ago)
Canada has plans to eliminate coal burning 100% by 2030. Already in the province of Ontario, 100% of all coal fired power plants have been shut down, replaced with nuclear, wind, and natural gas power plants. Canada has almost as much natural gas energy as coal energy, so that's why the shift to gas is not hurting us much. So while coal is amazing, it is just TOO DIRTY to use these days. For future use we would have to 'gassify' coal, and turn it into a form of gas that can be used in our gas fired power plants we have now just recently built.

You have not explained what the miners do once they reach the underground spot and what is a seam?
Paul Emery (1 month ago)
Not only coal comes out of the mine? I used to be a miner, and my job was to extract METHANE GAS FROM ABOVE AND BELOW THE COAL SEAM. The drilling machine was either one on rails on the thick seams or one 3/4 feet on retreat faces. This was hard work and very dirty but I loved the job. NO MORE MINES LEFT IN THE UK, BUT MILLIONS OF TONS OF COAL STILL UNDER GROUND

Ralph Farmer (1 year ago)
MDent There really isn't true renewable energy that is allowed. We could have free energy without wires, but where's the profit in that? The elite won't allow it. And what you think is renewable, requires an infrastructure worse than it is supposed to replace. Look deeper into it.

I'm a coal miner we put steel pins in the roof with plates to hold the weight. To seal the pins we use an epoxy glue. Coal mining is another experience that u wish u didn't decide on but u can't get out. Too many rules and dangers but so addictive.

Robert Getting a PhD simply requires paying money and following a process, it's nothing really stunning unless you are one of the FEW that are publishing papers with *revolutionary implications* to your field. Otherwise just a bunch of over credentialed wannabe elitists, thanks to our institutions of higher indoctrination.

How about rib support? What kind of mesh are they using? If they're using steel I highly suggest using corrugated plastic mesh. Unlike steel it is fire resistant, anti-static and the corrugation makes it easier to identify loose rocks. They're also light and easy to handle.

Oh I have A comment . I was laid off from the only job I have ever had that I actually enjoyed . The coal mines in southwest Virginia are the safest place in the world . It's A dangerous job do not get me wrong . I only worked for A few years  underground but the time I was underground I always felt safe . The only reason that I felt safe was the people . The best people I have ever met in my life . Hardest working , most intelligent , down to earth people you would ever meet . The mines that have been shut down in this area have devastated the economy . They just shut down A whole hospital In Lee county . The effects are on our  jobs . Now there are a few large mines still open for NOW . But all of that coal goes to China , to support the steel industry that left the rust belt behind . I worked my butt off to get the best job of my life and then politicians threw it away for Fracking . I mean come on have you even looked into what kind of chemicals they are pumping into our ground water . These people do not care . They make their millions , billions and move to another country  leaving  us with out any jobs . Were  drinking hydrochloric acid ...THEY....... Then say " Well it's good for the environment " ......are you freaking kidding me . Please people reading this spend a few moments of your time and look into fracking They say coal is bad ........it's not the environment they care about it's their buddies bank accounts  that change the  policies in this country .  Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely  .....................GodSpeed ......................  ....................The Cracken ................................................................

+TheActs2021 my father had it. He ran a continuous miner for about 20 + yrs and he was good at it. I ran one for about 2yrs, it was the best job i had in my life. He's right about working on a crew at the face (where the coal is actually mined) it's kinda like a closed society. You get to know each other, their friends, their family. And you can say or do things down there you can't outside. I've been around coal mines all my life. The 1st house i lived in was about 500 yds from the tipple. It's also where they brought miners out who'd been injured. I saw my own father carried out once. I've seen a few come out with the sheet pulled up over their faces. My father and grandfather were both killed in the hole, along with several uncles and cousin's. It is dangerous but it's also a brotherhood.

Noface, you are a dumbass. Gold and silver mines have nothing to do with coal mines. Gold and silver mines have nothing to do with ENERGY. When you go home and turn on your lights, charge your cell phones and feed your kids, its coal that does that for you.

...erm, JG, try increased silicone/metals mining and oil well production to support the construction of wind turbines and the wind farm's/new system's infrastructure!... - also, the 'green,' vitamin B deficient buddies' of yours PACs are now protesting and going to the courts to force the delay/contract retraction for any more expansion of existing &/or the developing of new wind farms because of the fact that their birdie friends are getting blade thwacked to death. Across the nation! And the avian carnage is really beginning to pile up! Just go ask the *BRIBE WHORES* Billy & Hilly, Clinton about Ryati and the LIPPO bribes in their Indonesian coal $candal of the 90's!! NAtional soCIalist Democratic Workers have historically been just as capitalist pig-ish for the money ho'$ cut in typical polit-corruption today - as their polit-predecessors had been throughout the Industrial Revolution. 'Ere back to the "Dawn" towards the end of the Renaissance when the money-changers began the international financier's 'sweep,' which still plays just as strongly.
